So, I was killing a bunch of pirates/mercs and I got Wrex's family armour without him being a squad member and without first being asked to get it.  I've now given it to him and continued on without thinking.  I've played this game a lot (~9th playthrough) and I think this is the first time I've done it this way.

 

I'm playing paragon and have I think 7 points - have I affected the famous it towards the end on Virmire?

Since you have gotten his family armor you will not need to pass a persuade check to convince Wrex to back down. The only reason he would end up dead is if you explicitly choose to kill him. (one of the dialogue options)
