So I've ALWAYS played fem shep.  It feels wrong to suddenly up and change the protagonist of my favourite SciFi universe. I don't ever even change the look of femshep, I keep her the same, stock Jane Shephard.  However, this time, I've forced myself to play as John Shepard, and so far I'm ~7 hours in and getting used to it.  However, I feel Jennifer Hale is much better voice actor than Mark Meer.  I hate to say it, but he sounds as monotonic and bland as Kaidan does ha.

How can I add a poll? I'm curios to see how many play MaleShep vs FemShep :)

Nice find, thanks.  I'll put my hand up and say I didn't bother using the search tool :D

I agree with some of the comments in that link - mainly that JH's acting went downhill in 3, probably as they were telling her to be more badass. Interesting to see Mark's acting in the later games, as aside from the odd youtube video, I've never seen maleshep in the other games...

So disrespectful....Mark Meer is such a hard working guy! He has been in voice working field very long and sometimes he could only get a part so small that only have 1.5 lines in it...and yet he always smiles and keep going, typical Aries. Monotonic? Do you know he's also the voice of the Vorcha. He's also the voice of the elf prostitute in DA2... Jennifer Hale is one of the best voice actors in the game, yes! Her work in BioShock:Infinite is the only thing shocked me in that game. But there is no need to mock Mark Meer at all, ugh~  And also,Raphael Sbarge who is also amazing.

For me, Shepard will always be male.

But that doesn't mean I automatically dislike female Shepard.

The game works regardless of gender, and it's made so that each player has "their" Shepard.

Both Mark Meer and Jennifer Hale are excellent voice actors, and they both do well voicing an iconic character.

As an aside, Ms. Hale voiced the Black Queen (the main villain) in Generator Rex, and she did an excellent job.  Her voice is very distinct, and you can pick it out anywhere.  I find her "sound" to be very singular, and that's not a bad thing.  She has that voice where you hear it and you can immediately pick up on it.

Mark Meer has a very wide range of both pitch (high-low) and tone ("hero", "vorcha", "wise guy", to name a few).  It takes a good ear, but you can hear that it's Mr. Meer if you pay attention.

Both have done a great job voicing Shepard. I prefer Mark because the overwhelming majority of my playthroughs are as broShep. But as I have said, both did solid work.

Mark's voicing in ME1 isn't as good as Hale's though.

Also, Mark is better for Paragon while Hale is better for Renegade. Or maybe it is just me.

I honestly find Mark Meer's performance much easier to put my own emotions into the lines. He delivers them in a way that allows me to bring my own subtext. Jennifer Hale's performance always has this feeling that she has her own opinion of how the character is feeling when saying that and is infusing the delivery with that opinion. Works with defined characters like Bastila or Felicia Hardy or Jessie Bannon, other characters I associate with her, but less so with a player character who is meant as a blank slate for the player to define.

She gives a good performance, but it's not what I want from my protagonist character.

I don't like femshep voice because it sounds too forced in the "I'm badass" department.

Femshep, always.

Mark Meer's acting always came off sort of "extra" To me.. I'm not sure how to explain it.

Maybe I'd need to do a Bro Shep playthrough or something to feel differently.

It's all preferences and mine have even changed over time. I used to not like Meer at all but I just finished another trilogy run today and I have to say...he really sounded right with the face I made for Shep (which happens to be this avatar pic here.) I did play as mostly paragon which does seem to suit him a bit better; but that's just my opinion.

Mark Meer's voice work as Commander Shepard does that, yes. You can play as a black, white, asian or hispanic male commander, his voice fits in just fine. My commander was a hispanic male, and Mark's voice has that all American or all Canadian quality in it,that fits everyone just fine. As for Jennifer Hale,I like the fact that she brings the sultriness into her commander's voice, but not too sultry. She's like the Mary Wells of voice acting, just enough sultriness that's not over the top or annoying.....The whole 3 ME games has a loooooot of dialogues, and they did it with the players' applause.

I like Hale for general dialogue, but Meer sounds a lot better when yelling or angry.

This is what I feel. I like both and both have done a great job. In M1, Jennifer Hale gives a better performance for me though. In M1, Mark Meer is a bit too much monotoric, unless you want to play the stoic soldier ( and then it's perfect ). It gets better in the next episodes though. For the renegade options, for me, it's certain, it's much better with Hale.

I actually do like both but since I play female characters i tend to get more attached to them and I highly prefer Jennifer Hale's renegade to Mark Meer's renegade however I actually prefer Mark Meer's paragon to Jennifer Hale's so each their own strengths....

Jennifer Hale always sounded like she was trying too hard to be a badass. The way she talks really irritates me. It is as if she is constantly talking with a slight whisper.

You just can't beat Mark Meer's handling of this line:

I love them both. But, I prefer Meer because the serious-tone matches me more.

Also in my opinion, I feel Hales voice acting went downhill from ME1 to ME3, whilst Meers went uphill from ME1 to ME3. I've noticed considerable amount of dialogue where I think to myself "Ehhhhh, I prefer Meers."

I never understood the controversy over the dullness people weighed over BroShep.

This began happening after ME1.  In ME1 she sounded quite natural, genuine, and feminine.  I agree that after ME1 they (be it her or whoever was directing her) tried to insert a little too much "badass" into it.

EDIT: Hot damn, this thread was originally made in 2014....

This is how I see it, too. Meer started off a little shaky in ME1, whereas Hale was really good, but Meer hit his stride in ME2 and by ME3, I think he was better than Hale was. Not that I don't think she was good, but I just thought Meer was excellent by the end.

I like Jennifer Hale for Paragon, and Mark Meer for Renegade.

Interesting. I always thought the opposite. Meer's paragon dialogue is very straight-laced, which I always thought was a good fit for a by-the-book military type, whereas Hale's renegade dialogue is outwardly smug and snide, which conversely I thought worked well for someone who, as a Renegade bends the rules and openly harbors contempt for other people.

They both work for the players who choose them. I personally prefer Meer because he just sounds like a person in command whereas Hale sounds a bit too emotional, like she has a personal stake in everything no matter how mundane, and she sounds like she's trying hard to be a badass instead of just being one, which makes her sound pretty lame. Meer is more straight forward and to the point.  He sounds like he's more invested during the bigger missions instead of just every single mission, which works for me.  However, I can forgive Hale for a lot of the faults I find with her even for a full play through of ME1, what I can't forgive her for is her 'I'm so horny' voice around Jacob. No thanks.

I like them both and I feel they both have amazing scenes as well as bad ones. Meer can be a bit flat in many deliveries. He sounds bored uninterested and just reading many lines. But femshep also puts too much emotion in some lines to the points its irritating. She does this annoying whispery crap that isn't needed and she over plays certain lines. I think Meer has steadily improved and did amazing in ME3. Hale has been solid all around but can be a bit inconsistent in ME3.

I highly disagree with people who tend to praise Hale to the high heavens and then say Meer sucked. I think both characters are acted well and bring something to the table. I can get into both characters well enough.

There's one advantage to the two different styles they bring, my 'professional soldier' Sheps are male as Mark Meer's VA can be dispassionate and steady, like them.

My more emotional paragon Shep and then my badass Shep are female as Jen Hale gives them the passion I want them to have.

It's a nice bit of variation if you think ahead and pick male/female accordingly.

There isn't a protagonist VA in either DA or ME that hasn't made me cringe a few times, either they sound too full on or too flat once in a while....none of them are perfect but I don't think anyone ever could be.  At least with Meer and Hale you have a good variation so that most ppl will find one they prefer.

....what I can't forgive her for is her 'I'm so horny' voice around Jacob. No thanks.

Oh god I know, I assume she was told to do that as there'd be no reason for her to just spontaneously say it that way.  Which means some of the writers were very, very off course with femShep's character.  <_<

But then femShep's romance choices in ME2 are so damn awful (except Garrus) that they must've been out of their minds when setting the whole thing up, including her reactions to Jacob.
