Mark Meer. Surely hes a bit unemotional in ME 1-2(he's soldier though after all), but much changed in ME3, and it suits considering everything Shepard went through.
And i can't stand Hale's overacting sometimes.

Presonally I'm neutral as I think both VA's did a great job as Shepard I've played both male and female Shepards and enjoy both. Running with a male shep sentinel atm but I've been playing my fair share of fem sheps as well as my last Shepard was a female infiltrator.

Jennifer Hale without a doubt. Renegade femshep ftw

I like both. I used to prefer Hale but... having just played through the trilogy twice with my mostly Renegade m!Shep (whose roleplay I enjoyed immensely), I don't know anymore.
Both VA's are talented and, yes, generally Hale puts more emotion into her performance as Shepard but, in a way, that's not always a good thing in a game like this where you form your character based on your interpretation. Meer seems to be more... neutral in his delivery which left me more room to put my own subtext in.
For example: my femShep always sounded like she had the hots for Jacob regardless of whether I wanted her to or not. Also, I played the Citadel DLC with femShep just after broShep and some lines from her... they just sounded off to me, whereas Meer pretty much nailed it for my character. She almost sounded like she was angry or tired most of the time (speaking about the main mission). Well, if I wanted her to be then that would have been perfect but in this case: no. My BroShep had this... humorous aggressiveness about him which I really enjoyed but he was also able to seamlessly shift to more gentle or serious tones.
So I guess it largely depends of your roleplay and such.
Since I just recently played through the trilogy again I do think Meer grew better during the series. In ME1 he was more... monotonic. Though I actually really like his deadpan delivery of certain lines whereas some other people would call him dull. Adds certain level of humor which seemed to be missing from my femShep.
So... I don't know. In some situations I prefer Hale, in other Meer. So I'll just call myself neutral.

Meer definitely improved from ME1 through to ME3, but Hale gave a fantastic performance in all 3 games, and imo was still way better than Meer even when he was at his best. I think Jennifer Hale is my favourite VA out of every video game I've ever played.

Hale.
I love Meer in his other roles. But his Shepard is dead inside.

I am a man and obviously i have only played male Shepard... i used the default shepard on my first complete playthrough, i ve started with ME2 (dated ML
) then ME3.I had so much fun that i decided to buy ME1 and play the complete trilogy in a row since the beginning for the first time..it was almost a complete different sensation and so entertaining, i dated sweet Liara. ![]()
I m tempted to start a playthrough with femShep but i can t date a man lol..i m thinking of trying Tali..but i am very uncertain if i should go with femShep or not, i don t know if i can have fun since i impersonate the character to much lol.

Mark Meer: the lesser of two evils, at least in ME1. In 2 and 3 he improved.
Jennifer Hale is an incredible voice actress, who does overact sometimes, case in point a lot of her lines in Mass Effect. Also every time she said 'Reapersh' in her hard as nails aggro voice it made my teeth itch. Great voice actress again, but I really didn't like her voice acting as FemShep, which is why I can never finish a FemShep playhthrough, and stick with Meer and MaleShep.
I thought by 3, Meer was really good, even when handling some of the cringey heroey dialogue during the Earth opening.
Sometimes I wonder what playing Mass Effect with a FemShep sounding like Rosalind Lutece would be like...

No, watching Meer in interviews, I'm reminded of David Tennant too.

Jennifer Hale always sounded like she was trying too hard to be a badass. The way she talks really irritates me. It is as if she is constantly talking with a slight whisper.
You just can't beat Mark Meer's handling of this line:
Meer is like "I'm Commander Shepard, I don't have to prove anything to you"
Hale is like "Look at me, I'm badass, just look! See?"

I rather pit Meer against other male Bioware protagonists; Nolan North, Brian Bloom, David Hayter, Bertie Carvel, Tom Spackman, Maury Sterling, Euan Morton, Nicholas Boulton, Harry Hadden-Paton, Jon Curry...
Meer performs consistently through the trilogy but his performance is... sterile. He made BroShep like he's a vehicle for the gamers. I could feel that he space out a lot when he's talking to companions that was unromanceable and for the romanceable ones, it was obvious that he is eager to get laid. Honestly, I would kill for Brian Bloom to be Shepard. He's amazing as Trooper and a better contender to Jennifer Hale.

At least, that's my take on it.

I like both. I think they each have hit/miss moments. They both just played Shep differently. I think because they contrast each other it can be difficult to listen with open ears. After becoming accustom to hearing Shep one way, hearing the other can seem "not as good" as what was originally heard -- as what was comfortable.
At least, that's my take on it.
Normally, I love both voiced gender protagonists almost equally which happen to me in all of Bioware games I play except for Mass Effect. I was surprised how "which is better" camps is more apparent for this game when it shouldn't be an issue at all.
