I make this thread fully aware that I'm feeling down about certain things, my head's fogged up with loathing. That said, holy sweet Jesus the grinding can go to hell and die. I spend fourty hours trying every trick in the book to get a single piece of armour: crawling through dungeons, slaying every freaking dragon, combing the high level areas, farming giants, buying absurdly overpriced Inquisition points to get all the merchant perks and supposedly rare mage schematics, but nothing. NOTHING.

In the end I resorted to the old check-crate-then-reload-area-loot-recycle trick, and after many hours of utter agony, I finally found the Battlemage Coat Arms schematic. Think it's over? Not even close. How am I to get the main Coat and Legs? I've burnt the entire game chasing just the arms. And say I want to craft it out of Giant Bear Hide? Well I can't, because all the Giant Bears have vanished. I am so done.

I mean, what's the point of it being this infuriating to do something so simple? IF I can ever complete the set, I'll have literally nothing in the game left to do; am I to just stand around the Emerald Graves imagining there’s story left, hell, imagining there's ANYTHING left? I'm already down to the last two story mission, and one's just a spat on a mountain-top. After that, the game is over, the STORY is over, and this playthrough dies.

Help me understand why is this a thing?

I cannot stress enough how much this game needs a newgame+

edit: Hissing Wastes merchant doesn't stock the Coat variants… you know, the one I want.

This is a problem in a lot of games.

Get some super awesome magnificent item... no point in using it because you've already exhausted everything the game has to offer.

It's one of those things that persistently niggle at you.

Why do you need the Battlemage Coat set?

1. Hissing Wastes merchant sells tier 3 schematics for every class.

2. Snofleurs spawn indefinitely in the Exalted Plains.

3. Don't grind if you don't want to.

Umm... because I want it.

Yeah, that's fine, but I'm not hating on the game, I actually love the game. If you want to get your kicks from Origins, more power to you, but my complaint here is very specific, and Origins suffered from similar problems anyway.

I just want a consistent method to quire the cosmetic items I want... I know it's not your fault, but while I'm rambling... I'd welcome a super challenging method, just anything... as long as it was a sure thing. I HATE indefinite chance loot, it gets under my skin and ruins my experience.

Hissing Wastes merchant only sells Armour and Mail, not Coats.

The hell is a Snofleur?

Don't give me that nonsense. The only way the game lets me get out of it what I want is to grind. There's no fuzzy middle ground here, to get what I paid for, as a player, I'm must suffer. I don't think that's fair.

Maybe you should cancel your preorder.

Best mage armor i've found is available from the Dalish in Exalted plains. Costs around 5600-5800 gold.

No hissing waste merchant sell battlemage schematics and i bought from him.

But i agree that we need an easier way for obtaining schematics for armor and weapons, i would implement a retro engineering function in the crafting system where you basicaly destroy an item in exchange of the schematics.

Giant Bear Hide? Do you mean Great Bear Hide, the T3 one?  If you let Leliana do the "Gather Leather" war table assignment, she brings back Great Bear Hide. Not quick or entertaining, but it's something.

Snofleur hide is T3 leather that gives frost resistance, and has the additional bonus that it removes class restrictions on armour.

I like the retro engineering idea.

Hissing Wastes Merchant sells Battlemage Armour and Mail, not Battlemage Coats. For each of the class sets--Prowler, Battlemaster, and Battlemage--there's three variants, Coat, Armour, and Mail.
Look, in this image, from left to right: Coat, Armour, Mail:
Spoiler

I haven’t found anyone who will sell me the Coat variant of anything. In 80+ hours I've found a handful of Battlemage Coats, one set of Coat Arms, and one Coat Arms Schematic. But to complete the set, I need the Battlemage Coat, Coat Legs, and Coat Arms Schematics... but they've proven impossible to obtain. I've cleared a few areas already, the story is almost done... it's just pointless now. If I ever do get them, it'll just be sitting in a save file I have no reason to use.

Very upsetting.

Go to the Hissing Wastes merchant. The best armor schematics are sold there.

Good to know, but my reason for wanting Great Bear hide was the texture and colour.
Lol, my need for very specific cosmetics should be apparent at this point.

I'm actually quite surprised Jazz doesn't know about it... given all the complaining about griding. They pretty much litter certain areas of the Dales. (empris and graves)

Or maybe I should be more supprised at the lack of knowing *what* a snofleur was?

Sometimes I only half read what a creature is, then make-up the rest of the name, and only recall the made-up version. I know what the creature is, but the name associated with it in my head is not snofleur, it's Snowflower. Don't judge me.

I believe the people over at Cheat Engine (Post 4 on that page) have already created an item editor which can alter schematics. I have tried out some things with that table and it seemed to work; haven't looked into the editor yet but it sure beats grinding. Make sure you dl the newest table though, should be somewhere in the thread.

Edit: Here is the item list for the editor

Looking for a specific set of equipment can be an exercize in frustration. Me?.. I just play and upgrade as I go along. No high blood pressure environment with my mindset.

Okay, I thought they sold coats in the Hissing Wastes.  When I fire up the game later, and take a look for myself, because I thought I saw coats in that list.  I was there about four hours ago, before my nap.  I'll post a screenshot no matter if I'm right or wrong, so it can get out there.
