On my first play through, I thought I did everything I could to "soften" her (don't kill the traitor, tell her not to kill the chantry sister even though she does it anyway). She was still hardened at the end. What's the best way to soften her?

I've heard of 1 other choice after the attack on Haven when she's blaming herself because she pulled back her scouts when some of them started going missing.  She thinks if she left them in the field, Haven would have had more warning.  To soften her, you're supposed to tell her she did the right thing in pulling them back, and the Inquisition's people are not expendable.

Other than that there could be other choices involved that people don't know about yet.  It's still a bit early in the game.

It may also be easier with importing an unhardened Leliana vs. a hardened one, if such a thing is possible (does only a hardened Lel kill Marjolaine?).

Prayer in haven - offer sympathy. Traitor - don't kill. First in skyhold - people not expendable. And you have "soft" Leli.

There's no tile in the DA:Keep to show if she was hardened or not in Origins so the game has no idea if you did or not.

Do is it required to do all if those things to get soft leliana? The first prayer in Haven I said "you should be mad at the ones who did it". Will that screw me?

There's 3 major decisions involved in unhardening Leliana, doing the first two is required to unlock the final one.

First, early in the game in Haven, Leliana will be giving the order to have a traitor killed, you need to stop her from doing this.

Then later when you get Skyhold, you need to tell her that she was right to pull her scouts back when some of them went missing as the assault on Haven was approaching.

Finally, if you've done the first two, Leliana will listen to you if you tell her to not kill Sister Natalie in her personal quest, otherwise she'll kill her no matter what you say. After that you tell her to move on from Justinia and she'll be unhardened :)

Thanks for this, I appreciate it! Cheers, mate!

I stopped her from killing the traitor, and told her that she was right when she pulled back her scouts, but she ignored me I told her to not to kill Natalie. She seemed pretty hardened throughout. I wonder if the reason is because I told her that the traitor could provide useful information and should be spared. I'm getting ready to do another playthrough and will see if there's a more "pleasant" alternative to extracting information from the traitor - will be interesting to see if that changes the outcome. Thanks for the information.

Besides Leliana, is there any other character we can harden/soften?

I've heard several people report this... I'm currently testing it as well, but won't finish this playthough for a long time, as it's going to be my 100% ideal world state one.  When i was talking to her about not executing Butler, I was as diplomatic as possible.  Saying things like "We need our ideals now more than ever."

Oh ****, I agreed with her decision to kill the traitor.

Is it still possible to achieve her softened version?

There is indirectly (although it doesnt change her in game) The Marjolane tiles.

@MikeFL25: When I told her not to kill Natalie she let her go.  I wonder why he killed her in your playthrough despite you requesting that she didn't?

You can kill Marjolaine and not harden Leliana, hardening or not comes from the conversation afterwards.

The top option is sympathetic. The middle and bottom are something along the lines of, "Why are you telling me this?" and "These are your problems."

No. That's the one I usually choose, and I get softened Leliana at the end.

Is there anyway I can edit these decisions in my current save? I don't want to start the bloody game from start, since I already have 60 hours of playtime. I am sure there is a save editor out there for this.

Tell her not to kill agent Butler at Haven.

Done!
