OK, so many users here prefer DAO to DAI. I can't really have a view on that as I didn't like either DAI or DA2 when trying them out. Basically, I found them both rather ugly and the combat just felt like it was lacking "umph". Guess I might have missed out on lots of other great features in them. Anyway, when it comes to Bioware, the last great game they made IMO was Baldur's Gate 2, which is one of my all time favorite games (in fact, I recently finished a new play through with the Enhanced Edition). And IMO DAI is a new classic by them. Sure, I have some minor issues with it, but so far (50 hours into it), I love just about everything with it:
- It looks great. The world is solid and beautiful. Note that even if graphics is important to me, it's not really about "next gen"-graphics for me. I still find Baldur's Gate 2 and Quake beautiful, for example. So for me it's the first Bioware game since BG2 that basically is art.
- The combat is visceral, fun and strategic. Yes, it could be "deeper", but for me it strikes a nice balance between strategy/micromanaging and action.
- It's quite often epic. I really loved the part leading up to and including the boss fight with a certain demon during the MQ, for example. And I actually got goosebumps during the cutscenes a bit later.
- The world is extremely rich. One of my minor annoyances with the game is that it's a bit frustrating with, say, the crafting system when you're new to it. But that feels like one of its strengths as well. There's just so much content that it probably will take hundreds of hours to get acquainted with everything - and I just love that.
- It's extremely addictive. Basically, I just can't stop playing it. The actual sessions always get much longer than I planned - and I tend to return to it as often as I can.
In short, it's very much the game of the year for me - and I'd say already in the all time Top 10 games in my book.
