On what difficulty? Normal I say it should be 17ish. The dragon that you summon in the Western Approach is basically a push over.

Hinterlands is not that tough either. 17ish should be sufficient. Just have to recognize the different phases.

17 is super overkill, you can easily kill the hinterlands/crestwood dragons at levels 12-14

How about for people who don't know how to use the combat interface?

You can easily take out the Hinterlands Dragon at around level 12-13. If you know what you're doing and have your party somewhat well equipped, it shouldn't be that hard of a fight.

When you say you don't want to tear your hair out, does that still imply you don't want to just cheese the fight?

Because Cole+Sera can just ruin any dragon that's close to their level.

First off...

Hinterlands dragon can be killed by a lvl 4...if you bug the dragon out by going to the far back and if you are ranged.  Takes a long time.

Second:

The hinters dragon has certain moves and mechanics

  1. Flame breath (channeled) : control the character that is the target.  Run either to or away from dragon, the closer the better.
  2. Fire ball (shoots a fireball at you.  AOE damage on ground) run away and dont stand in it.
  3. Melee front cone area.
  4. Melee back cone area (tailswipe)
  5. Wind Vortex (flaps wings and pulls you in)  Let the dragon pull you in.  You take damage when you are outside the vortex, Go to the dragon then when it is done casting, run back out.
  6. Stun scream - summons ads.  Kill the ads
  7. Fireball from cliff: get your party underneath the ledge where the dragon is.  The firealls wont hit you.

Additional dragon attacks for other dragons.

  1. Storm rings: The dragon will summon an electric ring around your teammates.  If a ring overlaps a party member, they get periodically shocked until moved out of range(heavy damage).  You will take periodic damage with it on, usually its not that much.
  2. Guard max: The dragon will harmlessly stomp the ground and gain 100% guard.

Nightmare Party killers:

  1. Wind vortex is deadly when your team is too far from the dragon but not out of the actual spell range.
  2. Wind vortex + storm ring:  You have to run to the dragon and position your companions equally away from eachother so you wont wipe your own party.  (or dispel if you have it.  Thanks Sevitan7)

Personal attempts:

  • Hard: killed hinters @ lvl 12 mage
  • Nightmare: killed hinters @ lvl 13 archer rogue
  • Normal: Killed hinters @ lvl 7 mage (used the dragon bug)  This was when i hit myself in the head for not doing the bug on nightmare

You can dispel "Storm rings." It makes life a lot easier.

Well logically speaking, your level should be within 2 of the dragon's level - so anywhere from 10-20 depending on which dragon you want to kill. Also, I would HIGHLY recommend getting resistance potions for each specific dragon (you can buy the recipes on Val Royeaux). As for basic strategy..it's just like World of Warcraft. DPS stay on the flanks, tank in front. Kill adds if the dragon summons any. Spread out if the dragon flies up or does some other AOE attacks. Rinse and Repeat.
