Is there some way to get to the shards in the Exalted Plains that doesnt involve burning Forty. Bleeping. Minutes. Per. Shard. either:
1) looking for an apparently nonexistent path up impassable rocks, or
2) repeatedly falling off jungle-gym wrecks of buildings trying to reach a specific tiny section of half-collapsed roof?
Heck, I got to "that one shard in the Hinterlands" in a single try, so the jumping and finding improbable paths up is no stranger to me. But the Exalted Plains is putting me a hair's breadth from pitching my computer out the bloody window. If anyone's got any tips, I'd be glad to hear them.
Wish I could go back and record some video to help you. It's been so long since I cleared out the Exalted Plains... I only ended up in the Hinterlands today because I finally sucked it up and went to go slay that dragon.
I do remember that building one. It was a whole lot of frustration at landing exactly just right on the beam and then not falling off to get there. A few of the others were also hair-pullers and a lot of trial and error with trying to jump on any foreseeable rock surface.
I sympathize. Those totally sucked to get to.
If you want me to go back and at least record that annoying beam-walking building one, let me know. I'd be happy to do so. It's the only shard location I remember vividly. I'd be hard-pressed to try and recreate any of the rock/mountain ones without their markers there to help show me the destination again.
I've actually found two on wrecked buildings in the Exalted Pain-In-My-Ass. One was a royal pain, which is why I swore a blue streak when I found Award-Winning Gymnast Shard #2.
Counting those two, I've found a total of four shards there so far that are, to put it generously, damned near impossible to get to. A video would most certainly be helpful (including to future people tearing their hair out over this, since I got 0 results searching for "exalted plains shards").
I went and grabbed one where I think one of the roof shards was:
I think I might have an old save in the Plains from before I cleared the area out (I went there initially for Solas's personal quest and pretty sure I didn't overwrite that save, so the Plains would be "virgin" again if so). I'll load that up and see if I can't try and do some more videos to help you (and others) out.
Okay, I did end up having a save with a "virgin" Exalted Plains.
Here are my first three videos. They show how to get to the first Ocularum, which is a bit difficult, and where the 6 shards are in its eyesight. Then, two videos on the hard-to-reach shards (the other 4 are on the ground and easy to pick up, so I didn't bother recording that).
It took me basically all of my afternoon to go back and do this, but I feel it was well worth it. I had forgotten how tricky some of them were to get to. My favorite quote is one by Ralph Waldo Emerson that states: "To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived - that is to have succeeded." In this case, if the videos I made today help only you, they were still worthwhile to make... but I've a feeling they'll help a lot of others, too, so I am smiling.
One thing to remember when shard-hunting in difficult spots like this... try to think within the game engine. I noticed early on that this Frostbite 3 engine recognizes textures. So, when trying to jump to strange places, I always tried to look for either stepping stones on the way up, a slant angled enough to crawl up, or moss or some other vegetation growing on the rocks that might give my feet purchase. That last you can especially see in the last two videos, where the only real way up was to look for the little runway strip of moss and go for it.
And when in doubt, just keep mashing forward and hitting that jump button as often as possible. Seriously, a few times only seemed possible because I managed to sort of double-jump from frantically mashing the button. But hey, it worked!
This is exactly what I needed. I have twigged to the texture thing, but sometimes what looks to me like a perfectly walkable texture flatly refuses to act as one. Seeing where some of the approaches are is invaluable.
I do notice your inquisitor is a rogue; mine is a warrior wearing big ol' honking tank armor. I wonder if that affects the jumps? It does seem like you get more hangtime than me. Hmm. Maybe Sera will have better luck on some of these. The double-jump is definitely a catch-as-catch-can mechanic.
One final thought that hopefully will help folks: I notice that in several of these videos, the other party members get in the way of the path up (especially on the "climb to the wrecked roof" situations). I found that often I had to move off a bit, then trigger the "Hold Position" order and they would all stay out of my way.

Thanks for all the help!
Yeah, this first playthrough is a female elven rogue (same as my first DAO... sort of my tradition, LOL). Not sure if any of those three factors affect jumping range, but good point... rogues would have the most dexterity (although, maybe not so much for short and stout Varric...).
I imagine Sera should be able to serve you in those situations, and possibly lanky Cole as well.
OMG thank you for this. Those shards drove me NUTS and I've simply stopped collectiong them (before, I was at least hoping for banter while running and jumping around but that didn't happen either). Next playthrough I'll go and collect all of them with the help of your videos. Again, thank you!
Btw, for the shard on the roof/house - try using a gamepad if you have one. I've found that it's MUCH easier aiming and jumping that way.
I did switch to Sera from my heavily-armored warrior, and I think the main benefit is that she's physically smaller. I don't know if the game engine cares so much, but it's a lot easier to see exactly where you're aiming when you're not looking at a refrigerator-size chunk of armor.
As a general shard-grabbing tip, I've lost count of how many I've gotten to by dropping a painful distance from above (600+ falling damage), grabbing the shard, then fast-traveling to a camp. Just because you have to figure a way to get there doesn't mean you have to figure out the way back.

I have gotten all the shards in this particular zone using my PCs; female , male human warriors and I don't have any problems. I don't think body size or armor is a factor.
I've been trying for an hour to get the broken bridge shard, the very last one I needed, and the mount trick worked beautifully! Thank you! Climb up the side without the tree, mount up and your horse can get you up on the bridge, easy-peasy.
