This isn't really much of a spoiler thread, if at all, so much as a confession of my sheer stupidity.

So I'm about 30 hours into the game and have arrived at and scoped out Skyhold.  There's one thing, though, that's been bugging the hell out of me and that is getting deft hands.  It's just one of my little idiosyncrasies.  Locks.  I hate with a passion not being able to unlock a lock.  It's not a criticism of the game, don't take it that way.  It's just me.  There is probably nothing earthshaking or truly game altering behind any of those doors, I know this, but it still drives me nuts to not be able to open them.

Anyway, like I say, I am about 30 hours in and I have three inquisition perks to blow.  I'm going nuts because (stupidity, take a bow) I need four inquisition perks to unlock deft hands.  So I think to myself, "I've made it to friggin' Skyhold.  Haven is lost to me forever and I still can't unlock hard locks.  WTF man, I'm the Inquisitor now."   So I decide enough is enough and screw it I'm going to the web for help.  Anything, any shortcut to getting another perk point instead of waiting for my influence to slowly accumulate.  I start searching and reading and nothing really leaps out at me until I read some post of review somewhere.  It may well have been here, I am not positive where I read it now.  Anyway, someone else was asking about deft hands and someone replied roughly as follows..

"Yeah, you need four points in secrets before you can choose deft hands.  Each agent you've acquired of course counts as a point as well as any perks you've already unlocked."

What?  What was that?  *reads again*

Yep.  I thought I needed four actual inquisition points to spend on deft hands alone.  I had not realized by "points" they meant the agents checked off that had been added.  I realized my stupidity, loaded up my game, and checked secrets.  Sure enough, I had three agents already from my time in The Hinterlands.  I had been able to unlock it for awhile now by spending a point on something else in secrets and then deft hands.

Such is the beauty of playing through a game for the first time, I didn't realize you could upgrade potions until halfway through

Haha I didn't realize that till my second playthrough so don't feel bad. They could have made it more clear, or maybe they did, that they count towards them. Then again, you do see them under the tab of which force the agent is under.

You are not alone I thought and did the same thing.  I thought it was really dumb to force us to wait that long to open up something that should come fairly early in the game.  I felt pretty stupid once I was able to save up the 4 perk points and realized I could have had deft hands after just the first.  Oh well live and learn.

Yeah the door perk was one of the first I tried to unlock because I like to finish each area and move on, knowing I still have stuff left behind bothers me.

I didn't realize that agents counted as points until now. I'd notice being able to take the perks with no points in the category that normally required points but I never put 2 and 2 together.

I feel stupid.

You folks have no idea how good it feels to read these posts.  I don't feel quite so alone now. :)

I spent points on secrets on my first go to get that perk. Second time around, I still had to leave haven but only spent the second point for deft hands (wanted conversation option)

As for stupidity: I spent half of my first game without understanding that the light effect of the search function is a direction indicator. I also totally overlooked the radar flash. So for half the game, I was annoyed about a design decision that would make me randomly spam the search function around a quest marker until I was by accident close enough to find something.

Only when I got to Chateau d'Onterre and got a tutorial pop-up I finally understood and searching became fun. I think you get that pop-up in Haven, too, but at that time I was busy learning other things about the game and just skimmed it. Or I never got it, I don't know.

I spent a good hour researching rouge skills and specializations because I thought it was a passive skill, welcome to the club!

On my first playthrough I also once spent a good 10 minutes jumping on a piece of red lyrium trying to break it-- as a mage. The indicator lit up for half a second. I didn't realize until much later warriors can break things without skills but mages and archers need things like mindblast or leaping shot to do that.

And it hits me again!  Thank you, I didn't know this.  Now I don't -have- to keep a warrior in the party to bash on the off chance I run into something that needs it.

Nah, the directional radar flash that Ieldra talks about, the one used to find hidden things when the compass starts flashing, has been there since launch. The new functionality is showing the location of things that are discovered on the minimap (regardless of whether they were hidden or not).

You're not alone. I did that too!

The problem is I thought unlocking skills were related to cunning as in DA2.

Yeah once I couldn't find it I had to google, by then I had recruited most of the early agents into the wrong sections.

Yeah, in my first GP I sided with mages and I be-headed all traitors... I didn't know that I could turn them into agents.

I didn't know that I could use Mindblast to break the Red Lyrium and I'm on my third playthrough now ^^

I did the same thing, started putting points into the random codex ones so I could get it, without realizing I had 3 agents. Second playthrough though, and I think I messed up because Secrets only has 2 agents now.
