Too many dazzling special effects

Hi guys,

I think DA:I is a great game but here is an aspect that bugs me:

Too many abilities, both passive and acitves ones, are underlaid with to shiny, dazzling graphical effects and these effects sometimes do not even contribute much information regarding what is going on in combat. On the contrary, they make combat sort of confusing and in my honest opinion also ugly. The worst part about it is that they overlay the actual animations that compose combat so that one cannot even see the good old slashing and thrusting and all the stuff that one loves about the brutal combat of a rpg that offers such. The one arrow that kills the enemy mage, the sword bouncing of a shield, the fireball that sets someone on fire... it all goes down between the exploding, flickering and zapping of lights and colours and what not, that have actually nothing to do with the combat itself. Let me give you an example:

My mage uses "blistering pain" so the enemy glows in some strange purple light. My warrior uses "war cry" emitting some kind of light wave and is then glowing in some strange orange colour himself. Of course all party members are protected by the "barrier" wich glows bluish. My other warrior drank a regeneration potion and is literally blinking like the emergency light of a police car, while also glowing orange (?why why why?). All the weapons are improved by runes that all glow differently. I cannot even see the weapon anymore. On top of it my archer uses "Leaping Shot" and fires some star wars-like laser beams over the entire scene. Not to speak of the good effects like blood or fire or ice covering the little rest of my screen. Long story short: My screen looks like this: http://augenkrebs.de.vu/

Srsly, what is happening? It is soooo imersion-breaking. I mean this no WoW-Raid, this is no broken traffic light, this is not new year's eve, this is no special-effect-feast to amuse the children at the kindergarden.-> Can you not see that IT IS JUST TOO MUCH of annoying effects? <- I want to see the raw, brutal combat not some effects going supernova on my screen. Why i.e. do i search for materials, then craft my own weapons, my own armor that i like the looks of just to see it all being overshadowed by strange effects to the point that i cannot see anything anymore. There are SO MUCH of that, that the purpose of a single one (which is illuminating positive and negative status effects) is lost. The little icons on the corner of the screen are enough and do a much better job anyway in my opinion.

Don't get me wrong I like the actual ability effects like this gandalf-move "mind blast" the "firewall" and such but all the illuminating effects coming along with the original raw ability-effects are annoying and pointless. You know, when I use "blistering pain" i know that the enemy is burning and running around in panic BECAUSE HE IS ACTUALLY BURNING. I don't need a purple light to illume the obvious.

So please, if not for my sake then for the sake that it could even increase the performance for everybody, please add an option in the graphics menu to turn off unnecessary, illuminating effects. Thank you!

There is an option to tone them down.

The game is great and I don't want to criticize it too much. Anyway, i just think those effects are kiddo-gimmicks for MMOs while here they just suck, so i guess its fair to ****** a little bit.

... What option? The only thing I know of is to set the value for "effects" in the graphic options to "low". But that still doesn't help it very much and it also sets all the good effects to low too.

Dont...  bring mages?

I mean,  shouldn't spells emit light,  sparkle and dazzle or am I missing something?

Yep, the light of spells and so on is fine. It even looks great now and then. I myself play a mage!! ( actually one reason i do that is to be farer away from the center of the effect-overkill :))   But its the additional effects i complain about. Or do you like laser-arrows? Or in that instance... why do warrios glow with this orange light? Are they mages? How can they do that? I am all for effects that do not brake the immersion.

The problem is less the mages ... it's the annoying VFX you get as warrior/rogue where they serve absolutely no purpose. Playing a melee character isn't exactly fun when you don't see what's going on...

You get used to it, thats what I found. At first I had no idea what's going on as well but after a while you start reading your enemies no matter how brightly they run around with their pants on fire.

Can't have everything.

You have to find a way to balance the cool factor of mages to rogues and warrior.  Poking things with daggers doesn't sound quite as amazing as casting an inferno or winter storm.

So while I agree that the effects need to be toned down...  perhaps we need to start with mages first which is where the bulk of the crazier blinding effects are coming from.

I remember Dragon Age: Origins had this issue too.. you know those ridicolous aura, enchantment and buff effects. Luckily you could find mods at Nexus that would get rid of that craziness. You could even remove the weapon trail or the yellow circles if it was too much for you. You could basically get red of all those annyoing VFX. I hope one day this will be possible for Inquisition too.

Very true. The visual effects are obtrusive and annoying. The ridiculous level of flash is probably there to mask how dull the actual gameplay is. But it's just making an even bigger mess.

Less is definitely more in this case.

Some of the effects are fantastically done, e.g. walking bomb. Others leave you walking around purple glowing mobs who look like models lacking textures. What we really need is more walking bomb type effects and less "PAY ATTENTION TO ME!" type effects.

The massive info boxes in tac cam are even worse for obscuring what is going on.

Yeah, those are another issue and my primary reason for not using the tactical camera as much as I'd normally have.

But as far as rogues/warriors are concerned, they don't need flash. What they need are good (as in: not over the top) combat animations, those who want flash mostly play mages anyway. Hopefully the modders will find a way to create an "annoyance removal" mod like there was for DA:O and DA2.

Yes, someone please create "ANNOYANCE REMOVER". I would pay for it  :) . Playing warrior/ melee fighter is unbearable for me at the moment due to all the stupid effects :( . Its so annoying! Here i linked two pictures to show you an example of the craziness (effect quality on low):

I think the first pictures shows the "war cry" ability. And if someone says: "Well that just lasts for a moment..." Then I say: "Well with over 6 participants in almost every battle someone always pulls something likes this every second and you have carnival all over again.
