I just started my second run through DA:I and was considering a warrior that could tank and dish out some nice DPS.  With that in mind, I ran across this video of a guy playing nightmare mode and going solo with his Champion build.

The idea of a high-dps archer looks fun but I'm not sure I'm good enough to evade all the damage.  The nice aspect of this build is that you can take as much as you dish out.  Well, that's what it looks like at least.

What do you all think of this build?

I'll weigh in a bit, though I'm a tad biased. >.>

With the right perks Champion is pretty much unkillable, which frees you up to gear for threat/damage.  I didn't show my gear in that video but it's primarily Armor Pen and Strength. With two perks each increasing max Guard by 25%, and several abilities that generate guard: Shield Wall, War Cry, To the Death, Walking Fortress, you don't really need to concern yourself that much with gearing for health.  Armor is a big contributor, and that just comes with gear anyways, and is increased through Champion and Vanguard perks.

Champion is definitely the ideal tanking tree in this game, I wouldn't necessarily use it to solo everything, but against big single targets To the Death let's you solo it just fine.  Keep in mind as hard hitting as it looks solo, most of that damage is based on a debuff that increases the target's damage taken, so your party, if you take one, will also be doing much more damage (which is more fun anyway IMO).  The two other dragons in Emprise took about 2-3 minutes to kill with my party.

Thanks for the reply!  You answered a ton of my questions as I wasn't quite sure where to go with my warrior or even if I wanted to keep playing her at all.

For normal questing, do you find your build to have decent DPS?  Are you able to move around the battlefield quickly from target to target?

As much as I have always liked playing a tanky class in games, the lack of mobility and burst can sometimes get very boring and dull when you're stuck with just a few useful abilities.  To be honest, I have been considering restarting the game as an archer simply because of the massive amounts of mobility they have.

Well, burst is a tad lacking, but the mobility is nicely handled by Lunge and Slash, especially when upgraded.  A handy thing with Warrior (at least sword and shield) abilities is that if they don't hit, they don't use stamina or go on cooldown, and so you can use Lunge and Slash to cross the battlefield quickly, and when upgraded, does pretty good damage when at used at range.

While SnS doesn't afford normal burst per-se, SnS is uniquely suited to destroying Guard on enemy units, when upgraded, Shield Bash does +1,200% damage to guard, and as you can see in the video, a shield bash crit entirely eliminates the dragon's guard a few times.  So while it doesn't afford traditional burst like a Rogue or Mage, it can quickly burst down guard, shortening some fights significantly.

Overall the damage is adequate, it's not going to outdamage reaver or a rogue, but it's respectable in normal encounters, utilizing Lunge and Slash on ranged units for high damage, and Payback Strike after getting hit for high damage.   On larger encounters or tougher mobs, TtD will make a difference, and the overall increase in party damage as a whole isn't something to scoff at.
