The only logical path is to chase him off like the abhorrent monster he is.

Which path did you go: human or spirit? And why?

Human, because Compassion wanted to live on for the boy he couldn't save. Chokes me up every time.

Also, inbetween/spirit Cole is fully aware that he messed up in the past. Rhys helped him see that there are more ways to help people than the murder knife. I don't know why people are acting like he suddenly forgets that on the spirit path, because in my experience he doesn't? He also says multiple times before his personal quest that if he turns into a demon he wants someone to put him down. He'd rather not exist than hurt people. (And  let's be real, if there's one thing humans are good at, it's hurting other people.)

I went spirit the first time because it's what he wanted. I wanted to respect his wishes. Towards the end I sorta regretted it. I'll try human on this playthrough, see how it goes.

Spirit. Trying to force him to be something he's not just seems cruel.

Spirit, because he became cole out of despair. The process was a corruption.

Spirit, because turning him into a human when he was a spirit just seems wrong to me.

We tried both ways
In the end chose human because Varric wanted it and because I like Cole and that outcome for him.

I haven't done the human path yet, but will on my Templar-quisitor.   Did the spirit path with my Dalish mage and Cole seems pretty happy with that choice.

I Know this thread is ancient but I only recently gave inquisition another chance (first got it on the 360, the graphics made it annoying to play) and I looked around to help me try and figure it out and I just wanted to put my thoughts out there.

I think the human path is perfect for him, sure it's dark and he's a pure spirit of compassion. But it's the fact that he is a spirit of compassion that makes it a perfect journey for him. I mean, I'm sure at some point he will return to his spirit form one way or another. But going through the journey as an imperfect human carrying such a pure virtue through such a harsh time would strengthen the will and resolve behind the virtue immeasurably. And making it through such a journey would change him from a simple spirit who could not understand why killing was wrong, into a strong wise spirit more capable of fulfilling his purpose as a spirit of compassion.

In theory at least.

In theory at least. No doubt it'll turn out like most bioware creations. Two cups of awesome potential mushrooms, several dozen slices of engaging start bacon, some smooth character cream mixing it all together... And a nice stale turd that seemed to come out of friggin nowhere and landing right in the middle, fouling up a potentially lovely meal. I mean, I usually get most of it down before it shows up and I can avoid it and pick out the good bits. But no one likes droppings in their meal... No one.
Bioware I love you and all the work you do to give us new adventures, but please stop making me sift through oceans of turd to get to the good bits.

I too always make keep him Human. His ending as a Human in Tresspasser, is rather sweet too.

Human. Never gave the spirit route a second thought.

I did spirit at first but did not understand him at all. Went with human the second time which helped. I feel like spirit is more his nature so I will choose that when I play again.

Spirit. That's what he is. Turning him into something else is not the right choice.

If Cole were to become human, he might still not 'learn' that mercy killing is bad, something I see pop up in this thread a lot. I personally don't see why mercy killing is bad, and I sure as hell am not a Spirit. Death is preferable to incurable suffering, imho.

Still; I don't feel either spirit or human is wrong. I have my preference for spirit, but I'm gonna roll human on my second play-through, partially because RP reasons and partially because I want to see all content available in the game.

I like Cole for who he is and try to help him always.  If it makes him more human then so be it.  My favorite scene is in the restaurant.

I've done both, but spirit seems to be the best choice if you want Cole to be happy. He does get a happy ending as a Human in Trespasser, but my gut tells me the spirit path will lead to interesting places in the next DA game, especially the things Spirit Cole said in Trespasser.

I think what made me realize human was not the better choice for him is when Spirit Cole during dinner told me Rhys never accepted him when he found out he was not human and I accepted him without wanting to change him. That kind of sold it for me.

I went Spirit. Cole forgiving the Templar and then helping him heal made it entirely worth it. Very moving moment.

Spirit, because my Inquisitor believed that he should be who he was. And spirits trying to be human has usually ended badly.

Also, my Inquisitor believed Cole had unique talents to offer as a spirit, such as possibly working with Cassandra to reverse tranquility in certain mages, since he can help them cope with the pain. Too bad this possibility is never reflected in any way. But that's what my Inquisitor had planned.

Also, spirit is naturally better, because Cole can always change his mind after thinking more about it. He can choose to set out on the human path later. But once he decided to be more human, that seems to be a choice that he can't go back on.

Personally, I think human is the safer way to go. He seems like less of a threat that way. But this is with 20/20 hindsight.

I find the "something he is not" or "his true nature" arguments interesting... plenty of analogues in the real world where people chose what other people "naturally are" and then force them to fit their expectations.  In our world, we consider that wrong.

Unfortunately, there is no way of engaging Cole on what he "wants" or "feels".

Truth is, there is no way to know what Cole "naturally is".  The unbelievably vast majority of spirits cannot do what Cole did... so, he has already displayed a behavior that is completely unnatural to spirits.

Interesting thing about that, is many people felt Cole would be overly spirit-like because of that one scene when he forgets the real Cole, but in Trespasser he still felt like the Cole I met, but less conflicted and he still had his humor, which he also uses to make the Inquisitor laugh at the end of the main game.

Both but I tend to go with human most of the time. First run I went with spirit and couldn't take the scene with him near the end of the game, it hurt my delicate shriveled black heart too much so unless it really really fits the character I usually go the human route. I foolishly connect Cole to my little brother too much so I can not stand to make him more spirit like.

I made him human the first time because I got the party banter with Varric where Cole revealed that he made himself appear human and not a mage because "it's what he [the real Cole] would have wanted." I wanted to honor his wish to preserve the real Cole's memory and identity.

As time has gone on though, I'd rather make him more spirit-like. He seems happier that way, and in some ways is more overjoyed that someone (Solas and you) accepts him for being a spirit instead of expecting him to be more human because mortals believe spirits are twisted and wrong. Now that I've replayed and listened to the conversations more closely, I can see that Rhys rejecting Cole for being a "demon" had hurt him deeply, and part of the reason our Cole strives to appear more human when you first meet him is because he's internalized the mortal view that "demons" (even spirits) are bad/wrong/twisted/broken, and that he has to be more human-like to be worthwhile. In Trespasser he gives a joyously impassioned speech about how now he realizes that there's nothing wrong with being a spirit--and he's glad that someone (Solas and you) understands. I'd rather be one of the players who accepts him for who he is than one who tries to change him into what we think he should be.

Plus, Cole wants to help people. Technically speaking, he can do more to help people as a Spirit.

Plus, there are plenty of humans in Thedas. Making Cole more human just adds another human to the obscenely large pile, while making him Compassion adds to the too few and dying numbers of kind spirits. To loosely paraphrase Solas, one spirit of Compassion (of which there are far too few) is worth a hundred humans.
