I get what you mean about accepting him for what he is and that's personally why I thought it would be in his best interest to feel real human pain and hardships in order to understand how to be more compassionate towards those who are more difficult to help.
I was just thinking that with abilities like his he could then look past all the darkness in a person's heart and hear the whispers of a heavy conscience. I mean, if he started helping potential "bad guys" heal their wounds and become more aware of their consciences. Or help him cope better if he ever ended up in a situation like the cole incident again.
But mostly to assist in redemption. My belief has always been "the broken and wicked make the best heroes" basically once you've seen or been the worst you can deal with things when they get rough. Plus, a little inside information never hurts, lol.
But basically I could imagine normally a spirit of compassion would be too soft hearted to delve too deep. Meaning the people suffering the most are the ones who could not be so easily reached. As a spirit he has enough heart to share with thedas twice over, but he's about as sturdy as a daisy. I mean I'm basing all this on the assumption he can return to his original form. But the main reason I made my decision was to make him a bit more resilient so that he could better fulfil his purpose. Otherwise I'd go with spirit without a second thought.
I mean I love him as a spirit, he's so pure and well meaning I think he should've been named divine at the end haha. I mean, it wouldn't happen in a million years for multiple obvious reasons. But imagine how much better the world would be if he was. Just throw an amulet on him and you've got an eternal divine who can't be easily killed or corrupted and has nothing but pure intent naturally. It would even eliminate that awkward transition between divines. And to top it all off, the holy babble they could spin about a boy who never eats ages or dies!
*sigh*
If only.

I made him more human even believing that he would be happier as a spirit.
Cole is very concerned about not harming people. If he turns totally into a spirit nothing prevents him from being twisted again, as when the real Cole died. As a human he may not forget about his mistakes, he may feel guilty, but he will be able to grow and thus doesn't repeat them.
So... I basically chose the human path because it will help him to follow his principles.
