I enjoyed fighting the high dragons, but apparently those who played with a knight enchanter were less entertained. Some were even bored by the easiness. I commented recently on a Bioware post about these scaly challenges as Alan E. Marling:

Those who replied and had played the Knight Enchanter admitted that it felt ridiculously too easy, even on the higher difficulties. I then loaded Vivienne and tested her out. Indeed, her damage combined with her regenerative-shield capabilities seems unreasonable. I recommend considering toning down the damage output. The DPS would be fine without the power of the mage shield, but those two elements together may be unbalanced.

The KE's damage is rather on the low side. If you spec a mage for ranged combat, they'll do a lot more dps than the Knight Enchanter. The KE is all about defense, not offense. My lvl16 KE does ~300dmg with each hit of Spirit Blade, how is that too much? Or are you only looking at the damage vs barriers and guard?

Also, there's already at least one thread for this topic: http://forum.bioware...s-way-too-good/

I rushed through the game as a DW rogue and it was still easy. This game is just easy, its not only the class. That class is strong, mostly because it has the best economy of actions of any mage since it auto regens barrier upon damage with a passive ability and every other mage needs to spam barrier. What makes it easy is that it only takes two buttons to do anything..a get away ability and spam your spirit blade..thats it. To be fair though, it is a spirited copy of the Arcane Warrior, most simply used AC as a magically infused buff tank.

or if you think that class is op then don't play it. you're calling for a nerf on a class you didn't even play the game with lol. try a game on nightmare if you think that's too easy then enable friendly fire, nobody is posting how anything is easy with friendly fire enabled.

I was able to finish on nightmare with knight enchanter without changing controlled character and didn't use tactical camera not even once. But this a single player game, why nerf? Just don't play KE

Fiendly fire is lame since it's not activated for your enemies too. Why should I be in unnecessary disadvantage?

I guess I must be the only one here who seems to think Necros blow KE out of the water.  I bet if you compared total time completions from a KE to a Necro that necros would have completions hours ahead.  I have no proof other than playing both and can tell you my Necro wrecks face all things fair and equal.  There is no comparison.

OP? Man, the only thing that could be called overpowered it's the damage the spirit blade has against guard or barriers, but for the rest I found it to be very support oriented.

If you want more of a challenge, do some (or all) of the following:

1.  Play on Nightmare difficulty

2.  Enable Friendly Fire

3.  Either don't use or severely limit healing / regeneration potion usage

4.  Don't use items that give any elemental resistances (Avoid the Temple in Forbidden Oasis where you "redeem" the Shards)

5.  Don't use / craft items or use abilities that enhance (or restore) health, barrier or guard or in any way reduce damage you receive

Knight Enchanter is not the only class that is arguably OP.  And, Knight Enchanter has already received two Nerfs.  Spirit Blade no longer Combos and Disruption Field doesn't work on some enemies anymore.  Even a 1H + Shield Warrior, with decent equipment and properly spec'd (generate guard, armor bonus (bugged?), take less dmg from front, can't be flanked, etc.) will do very well even against a Dragon.  You could also make the argument that Reaver and Tempest (Flask of Fire / Lightning + Thousand Cuts is also OP).  This YouTube Video demonstrates Flask of Fire + Thousand Cuts vs Dragon on Nightmare.  The Dragon loses more than 50% of its health.  Even a properly Spec'd Rogue with a Bow can do very well against a Dragon.  In this YouTube Video, Sera uses Flask of Lightning + (what appears to be) the Longbow of the Griffon, doing a substantial amount of damage to the Dragon.  IIRC, the Longbow of the Griffon fires 3 projectiles.

I only managed to kill my first Dragon (the Storm Coast) last night.  I wasn't planning on fighting the Dragon, but had the quest to deal with the Red Templars on the Storm Coast.  After finishing that, I decided to go to Dragon Island.  I play KE on Normal difficulty.  I was trying to "cheese" the Dragon by attacking at range, but that wasn't working.  The Dragon started to spit lightning from range and managed to damage and eventually KO my other party members.  I used 1 health potion myself.  My other party members had used the rest, so I had none left after that one.  I eventually managed to kill the Dragon after about 20 minutes.  I was level 16 and the Dragon was level 19.  I had to keep on my toes and even used Mark of the Rift two times.  The Dragon was still alive.  After the Dragon was finally dead, I felt like I had accomplished something.  I hardly felt "OP", at least not anywhere near what you see in the YouTube Videos.  Granted, if you spec KE a certain way and take other passive abilities you can be very difficult to kill.  But the same goes for other classes.  You are not, however, invincible.  Personally, I fail to see the point of Nerfing anything in SP mode.  If a player believes something (a Specialization, Ability, or even Item) is OP, perhaps that player should not use what he considers "OP".

I haven't bought DA:I, so I probably have no right to say anything here but nerfs almost always upset more people than they please.

Nerfing would punish the people that have fun with those character times.  Should they be punished for one of Bioware's mistakes?

Agree with those that say the game is just overall easy, lots of specs are great.  If you focus on going after the best bang for the buck stats you can pretty much coast through Nightmare (FF off).  I will say, though, that KE does seem OP and they should nerf the damage done to barrier boost synergy.  Cutting it by 30-50% is probably a good start.

At the end of the day though its a singleplayer game...a spec being OP is not the end of the world.

Yeah...that ability that makes it so you can literally never die as KE unless you make a huge mistake might be a little OP. Then someone is going to say the game is easy period, but that still doesn't change that relative to other classes the KE makes the game look like a picnic. You literally only need to use 1 spell and you are basically invincible. To play other classes at nearly the level of KE you at least have to press more than 1 button. You actually have to get good gear and build right.

I don't really care if it's nerfed since I don't play a KE and never plan to, but can we please stop deluding ourselves that it's not massively OP? You can enjoy being massively OP, it's not a crime. (I know because I've used Vivienne in my party on nightmare and anytime we wipe i just spam spirit blade until everyone is dead. It can be fun.)

You make an interesting point.

You know, it may sound strange to say this, because we've come to expect games to be perfectly balanced to our own individual standards, but I would hear people complain how weak and underpowered a certain class/build was and then people would tell them they could make their character more effective if they built it a certain way. Then they'd complain that they shouldn't be forced to build their character a certain way. In other words, they'd build a sub-optimal character and complain that the developers should fix it rather than weighing the synergy between abilities and stat allocation to make their character more effective. Most players would consider that way of thinking to be silly and spoiled.

But now think of it from the opposite perspective. You've created a character with the perfect synergy moveset and now you're destroying everything and the game is way too easy. This is going to sound crazy to most and people probably won't agree with me, but we're talking about a single-player campaign. You don't have to make the most over-powering character every time. If it's too easy, you have full control over how you allocate your abilities. You can nerf yourself for the sake of your own personal enjoyment factor. It's just you and the game. Not competing against other players. It's not like the Dark Souls community where people want a bunch of things nerfed because they're tired of getting slaughtered by other people (you never hear them complain that it's too easy for them to win).

If someone uses the same build and maybe they aren't that good at playing so this helps them out, or maybe someone just wants to kill everything and play more for the story than the challenge, good for them. Why should the developers take that away from them because you've knowingly made your character OP and are no longer sufficiently challenged? Just move a few skill points out of those barrier-supporting abilities or the spirit blade and you should be just fine. I don't know if you've ever heard anyone suggest this before, but I think if you really think about it, it's not that crazy.

They already nerfed spirit blade in Patch 2, taking away its combo ability (detonator). I'm actually disappointed by this, more so due to the lose of the combo cinematics (slow mo) vs the damage... but the lost damage does stink too.

There are PLENTY of ways to 'de-optimize' if you find the game (or KE) too easy.

The REAL issue (IMO) isn't with any of the builds/specs but the 8 active ability limitation. If we could get to 12 (or "all" acquired via radial menu ala past versions of the game)...

Why?

If you want to play as a mage, you have other specializations, KE is only one of them. You can even play with no specialization. If you still want to play as a KE, its very simple, avoid using those powers you think make the game boring and ultra easy.

I dont know why people think KE is OP when i have one rift mage/inferno that can pull of the abyss+fire mine for like 8k and spam a lot of crap with no time/mana consumption.

If you wanna play a wanabewariormage go KE, if you want to be a real pew pew mage go Necro/rift mage where the real little men go.

For me KE is overrated!

I only played KE on MP and jesus is so boring, im a kind of guy who like casting flashing stuff and feel the power running trow mine veins, trust me embrace the rift mage. The best thing that can happen to me was a chest that drop me "staff of the void" on MP. veil strike one hit, i love it.

Nerfs are bad.

Nerfs should be optional.

I used mods to undo the nerfs that got patched into DAO.  I oppose nerfs.

I wanna knock back spells and arrows with my giant golden blade of light.

But goddamn using the sword makes the KE just unstoppable. I know you can't appease everyone with difficulty, but I've bumped this thing up to nightmare and I have to avoid the sword if I want to keep things fun. I wish I could nerf myself, if it was moddable I'd knock that damage down and strip off its special abilities. Then knock down the mana cost.

oh yes, lets nerf a single player game and ruin people's enjoyment of it, because it went so well with DAO...

I thought it sounded like the most interesting specialization since Rift Mage/ Necromancer both seemed a little "meh" as far as interesting abilties. Sadly I'm planning on not taking just so I don't trivialize the game.

Balance in general just needs tweaks though, and nightmare should be difficult for even decent micro-managers - currently it feels like they balanced around players taking the more action RPG approach and not using much pausing and micro-management.

I think if you want the game to be easy you should play on easy, not try to defend overpowered specializations/abilities so that people who want balanced gameplay can't even enjoy them.

It's single player, no-one is bringing Knight Enchanter's in but you. If you don't like 'em, nobody can make you use them.
