There's a small part of me that selfishly wants to keep sending Hawke to his/her death in the fade just so I can Hug Varric after. It just gets me everytime.
On that note, there are precious few playthroughs where Loghain survives Origins to the point where he shows up as the warden at Adamant. But after running my only play through with Loghain; By the Maker! He is by far the most profound, most intense, most emotional choice for the warden. (Admittedly Alistair is a close second, but I just can't do that to him and much prefer to have him crowned king.) He just seems so desperate and determined to redeem himself.
And yet the whole time he maintains a stoic sense of calm confidence. He doesn't let anything phase him, and has no reservations about doing what needs to be done. You come to realize why he was such a Hero to Ferelden. I came to truly realize how much he actually had in common with my own Warden.
And the real tragedy, the truly emotional moment for me, was realizing that despite him being the best man for that job, there is no way for him to survive it. My main warden was an elf, she could not simply forgive him for allowing such mistreatment of the Denim elves where she grew up, much less the way he willingly sold them to slavery to pay for his pointless civil war. She had to see him die for his crimes, it's simply not in character for her to let that pass. I'm sure Loghain himself probably understood that better then anyone in the end. If their positions had been reversed Loghain would not have hesitated to kill her as well.
