Honestly, these 2 characters are by far the worst in all of Dragon Age.

I get what theyre trying to do with Vivienne, to have a sort of high borne classy lady with education around, to counterpart Sera, Bull, Varric and so on. but they made her waaaaay too mean. Shes not snobbish, which can be fun, shes just spitefully mean. Which makes her dislikeable and uninteresting. Shame cause she had such a good intro.

Solas is just bland and dull. Hes the Kaiden of Dragon Age, so vanilla with this droning unending lecturing voice. Also shame cause his true identity is so interesting and his face, at the beginning i was so excited to use him cause he looks a bit like Putin. But hes far from the most interesting world leader... hes also, at least i think, the only one without a quark. I mean, at least Vivienne's mean-ness is a personality. Solas is just the white bread of the group.

whats even more irritable is that these 2 are also the most powerful characters!

but i loath playing them.

not the same way as Vivienne is educated. a sort of... life experience vs upper class education.

Vivienne is the best around, nothin's gonna ever keep her down!

I definitely wouldn't call Solas boring, he and my first inquisitor hated each other XD (and my quizzy yelled at him in Elvish lol)

They both know their stuff Vivienne is a bit more absolute about things, where as Solas is a bit more open minded.

I hate Dorian though...

I love her personality :D her dressing down of that Marquis who insults the inquisitor had me in stitches XD and I love how she calls everyone "my dear" and has Iron Bull jumping when she snaps (she does kind of look like a Tamassran lol). I see her as a mentor figure for my first quizzy. <3 I also wish we had clothes like hers!

My perception of Solas is colored by the fact that Sera is my romance in this playthrough. I'm kinda seeing the world through her eyes, and so I don't care much for Solas, very much finding him to be "a snooty elf".

Haven't interacted very much with Vivienne as yet, because I feel kinda like Charlie Brown, and she's Lucy with the football. I try to start something, and she shoots me down... every time.

Why, Bio, why must you torment me?

*ahem* Uh, what were we talking about?

Oh yes. I do enjoy talking to her. I think it's great to have the viewpoint of a pro-circle mage around, since I've always played a pro-mage, anti-circle kinda warden/hawke/inquisitor.

Most of the times, Solas is a nice pal, but sometimes he is too condescendent.

Solas may have a monotonous tone, but I actually found the conversations with him to be the most fascinating out of all the companions. You said Vivienne isn't snobbish but mean, I see the opposite. I think she's a snob, but isn't exactly a horrible person.

edit: also... Sera may be uneducated due to her upbringing, but Varric and Bull are both actually highly intelligent... bookwise and lifewise.

This. It's there for both of them if you pay attention. It might be more obvious for Varric, but that's because people sometimes have a hard time seeing past the muscle when it comes to Bull.

Both are extremely well read.

I actually ticked of Viv for a change. I gave her the ruthless political option in the convo at Skyhold where I told her that losing Haven actually worked out for the better because we ended up with a more defensible position and more people, and she got a bit upset at me.

But no, I'm not entirely fond of Viv. She's just a bit too fond of power for my taste.

Solas on the other hand is someone I like. He's like that zenned out monk, but if he really has had that much interaction with the Fade and spirits, he'd have to be very controlled and self-possessed to survive it wouldn't he? That explains a lot about his demeanor.

I think that instead of intelligent/educated, the OP meant to say that Viv was more "refined" that Varric or Iron Bull. While intelligent, I think we can all agree that they're a little less refined and high class than Viv.

i guess its just my preference. i always do prefer the wit and charming characters more than badass or cool factor. thats why i love sera, varric and bull.

the other thing is, it would make solas and viv infinitely more likeable if they slipped out here and then like cassandra.

at first i really didnt like cassandra, this straight edge anything that isnt me is bad kind of character.. then i got to see her slip up with varrics sappy novel scenes and suddenly shes also one of my favourite characters. because now, everytime she acts tough, theres an undertone to it.

where as vivienne and solas is just.. that.

yes! true! which is a negative for me. i mean in DA:O, Wynne was probably the most refined? but she didnt look down at you. she was a sweet old lady who could set people on fire. it made her charming and loveable.

Yeah, I can see that. I just felt the need to explain that even though one is a goofball and the other is a muscleman, if you actually get to know them you will see they are way more than just that. :P I was personally very happy that Bull broke a stereotype of big strong warriors  lacking in the brains department.

But yes. Viv's condescending nature has grated on my nerves quite a bit. Even Solas is a bit this way, though I'm more forgiving of him because it's to a lesser extent and I find him more interesting. I still enjoy both characters though, they are unique as far as personality types for the companions go.

yeah, they just needed a bit of opposing traits.

Morrigan was extreeeemly condescending, even to the point of spiteful. but she was also very clueless about the world which made her loveable. add on top of that, she was blunt and matter of fact which made her condescending tone felt more, social awkwardness. which is endearing.

i dont know, maybe if vivienne had a ultra girly moment, or got drunk as hell or had a really not her habit like.. fishing or something haha. that would make her more likeable i think. same thing with solas, imagine if he had a drinking problem?

Vivienne and Solas do have layers...they just both like to play things much closer to the vest than even Cassandra can manage.

Vivienne does rub me the wrong way a lot. I still don't take her anywhere with me and somehow managed to net enough approval to do her personal mission and I was glad for the insight into her character. It reminded me of the difficult time I'd had connecting with other characters in the past (Sten and Fenris, for examples). They're worth knowing, I think, but they can be difficult to 'get close to.'

Solas I don't mind so much. Sure, he can get a bit annoying with his 'I am an Expert on the Fade, Spirits, and Elves!!!' business if you don't let him have his way...but I can work with that.

Things like Vivienne snapping at Blackwall because he asked if she was alright after she took a hit in a fight (and by doing that, he was sort of admitting he'd failed at his self-appointed 'protect everyone' job, I thought)...was just uncalled for. I get it, you want to stand on your own two feet or whatever, but you don't need to run over people in the process.

Varric is the head of a noble Merchant Guild house and a celebrated author all over Thedas. I really can't even.
