Varric is the head of a noble Merchant Guild house and a celebrated author all over Thedas. I really can't even.

that doesnt make him upper class.

he was born in kirkwall after his family lost their standing in orzimmar. he earned his way to the top as a merchant prince. (which btw, is not the same as a real prince). he still spits, talks trash and gets into drunken bar fights.

vivienne is upper class the way the the Koch brothers are upper class. beauty and fashion over function.

So back to my earlier statement that you really have no idea about who Varric really is. Even Vivienne acknowledges his nobility, how he was raised as nobility, and questions why he doesn't accept it. You do realize this, yes?

>calls Vivienne upper class and educated, but doesn't trust her opinion.

>insults Varric's intelligence despite being loved among the nobility for his literacy

>completely disregards in game statements to about the only thing that made a lot of Dragon Age 2 bearable

Seems to me I'm not the one who's being condescending...

I didn't care for Solas much either, but as the game goes on, he feels more and more like the Spock to my CPT Kirk.

agree, the thing is. spock cracks up, its his human moments that makes his other 99% straight laced moments awesome. at least it is for me. its a building up to see when will he crack.

Solas isn't boring if you actually listen to him and his banter with the others. He's just understated and dry in his delivery, with a naturally calm demeanor, in my opinion. As for Vivienne, she's intelligent and can wield words like a scapel, traits that I admire even though I don't necessarily agree with all her beliefs vis-a-vis mages. At times, I cringe at how she treats other companions - but then my snarky side goes "hah, good one, Viv!"

I'm sensing you don't like characters who are smarter than your PC.

Only half serious. People like what they like, you don't have to like every character (even though I can honestly say that I do). Calling them "the worst in DA," however, is just dumb, sorry.

why is it dumb? unless you rank every character as the exact same level, theres got to be one thats at the bottom of the list. and there for that character is the worst.

Because it's a statement made as if it's objective fact, when it plainly isn't. It also isn't a contest. Every character has their fans. Have you seen the Solas thread?

the other thing is, it would make solas and viv infinitely more likeable if they slipped out here and then like cassandra.

See, that's interesting. Because both Solas and Viv do have those moments. They just aren't as obvious as Cassandra's because they're both much more self-possessed than she is. Cass is lovely, but she's no great player of the game.

Vivienne is power-hungry, yes. She also sees the world through privileged eyes. However she's had to work damned hard to get where she is. She's fought for every scrap of power she has, and she makes people respect her, because they won't respect her any other way. But there's a softer side to her as well. If you do her personal quest, you can see her desperately try to help her lover, someone she obviously cares for and has known for years. She can also take on a very motherly role, especially towards a circle mage Inquisitor. You can also sort of see that with Iron Bull. And in her banters with Cole he reveals that she actually does care for him, but hides it.  I don't agree with her on a lot of things, but I do respect Madame de Fer.

And Solas... If possible, he's even more guarded than Vivienne. He's usually so calm and even-keeled. But that's deceptive. Solas is a person who feels very deeply. You should do his companion quest as well. In it you try to save his friend; a spirit of wisdom who has been corrupted into a pride demon by a bunch of mages. The spirit ends up dying anyways, and Solas just goes nuts. He'll kill the lot of them unless you stop him. To see a dear friend of his, someone he's known for a very long time and who was a gentle pacifist, killed because these mages didn't even take the time to think about their actions, makes him utterly livid. Take that with the fact that Solas, by his own admission, does not have very many friends. Every single one of them means a great deal to him. In his personal quest you finally get to see him when he isn't holding any of himself back.

At his core, Solas is a very passionate person who is also weighed down by a lot of guilt. He did something in his past that changed his whole world, and he feels like everything he tried to accomplish turned out wrong. And now he's a fish out of water who desperately wishes he could return home and who is afraid that in the end he's going to die alone. You see even more if you do his romance, and it does an even better job at showing how profoundly lonely he is. He tries to keep everyone at arms length throughout the whole game, but during his romance he lets down his mask.

Solas and Vivienne are actually two of my favourite characters. They are very closed-off, but I think that makes it even more rewarding when you finally understand them.

hm yes.. i do see your point. and a good one at that. i suppose ultimately it comes down to personal preferences. i did do those missions and saw those scenes, to me it ultimately didnt work as these slip ups was just a more extreme of what they already are. as suppose to an opposite. like painting a very dark picture with more black rather than a stripe of light to make things pop.

Well people who are very closed-off often "slip-up" in more dramatic ways than someone like Cass who expresses herself on a more regular basis.

Ultimately, Cass is much better able to express herself than either Viv or Solas. She is very free with her anger, but also with her apologies. Less so with her affection, but it's not impossible to get through her shell. Vivienne, on the other hand, has based her entire life around presenting a strong image to the world. The one tiny crack in her armor is during her personal quest, and then the armor is back up again, and she doesn't let down her guard a second time. For her, sentiment is a weakness, and she works constantly to excise it as much as possible. The Inquisitor isn't really able to get as close to her as they are to Cass, simply because her character does not allow that.

Solas isn't able to express himself for a great number of reasons. He needs to stay with the Inquisition, and thus he isn't going to try rocking the boat. He tries to be as low-key and unassuming as possible. He has to negotiate a delicate balance between offering the Inquisitor the benefit of his knowledge while also trying not to appear too knowledgeable (and he sometimes fails rather hilariously, as you can see in a second run if you know who he is). That's why he often feels so distant. He's trying to remain distant. He can't just let go and get drinks with Bull at the bar like Dorian or Sera or Varric can. Solas is often on the outside looking in, but that is by his own efforts. And the tragic thing about him is that he could really use a drink at the bar with some friends. He isolates himself, but his greatest fear is being isolated. It's a self-fulfilling prophesy that he doesn't know how to break.

Just to point out, there's banter with Cole that ads to why Vivienne may act the way she does beside the great game. In it there is (what I think anyway) an allusion to the fact that someone (a Templar or noble of I remember correctly) assaulted her, and her view to never be made to feel that weak again. At least I think that is the convo. It was a marathon session at like 5 am.

First one out of the dialogue chains this person put up. I think there's another somewhere further in. For all that Cole and Vivienne's banters show her at her worst, they also provide a lot of insight into her character.
