I find Vivienne to be a pretty despicable person. I was officially done with Vivienne after completing her personal quest:

Spoiler

She manipulated me, and she manipulated the feelings of a grieving family, all to get some sort of undefined, marginal advantage. Well, there's a word for people who don't give a toss about other people's feelings - they're called sociopaths. If I'd been given an option to kick her out at that point, I absolutely would have taken it.

I'm convinced that pretty much every opinion she holds is only because holding that opinion opens up more political doors for her. I bet the only reason she supports Circles is because of the power trip she gets by being First Enchanter. If she didn't have that, I guarantee she'd be in the rebel camp quick as lightning.

Interesting... I never got this scene. Must have missed it... but that is pretty upsetting.

Boring? I actually found these two to be some of the most interesting companions we've had in the series. Funnily enough, they can, at times, be two sides of the same coin. Both are slightly 'elitists', and can be quite condescending if you disagree with their point of view. Solas's views on the fade and spirits are unlike anything we have been presented with before. His character pretty much makes you second guess every piece of known lore we've received. I see that he could come off as boring, if you only look at the surface level, but that is kind of the point to his character. He isn't supposed to appear as flashy, demonstrative, or threatening. Trickster archetypes are never the characters who are supposed to attract attention, not until they are revealed, that is. Vivienne, on the other hand, appears to be rather petty and narrow-minded. I think she is the type of character that you either love or despise. She has a way to get under your skin, either way, but I believe that there is something more to her character that I have not seen yet. She does show a more affectionate side on her personal quest, and yet, even with the death of her apparent love, she manages to use it to her advantage. She is, by definition, the ruthless social climber. I suspect that she has very viable reasons for being the way she is, however, as we all do. And I do feel saddened for her at times. She has her moments of letting her guard down, and saying something oddly comforting, but I do not doubt that she would not hesitate to step over anyone that got in her way. Despite my general dislike of her, I still believe she was a wonderful character.

OP that's your opinion. I love that Vivienne is mean. Solas is ok......and don't compare him to Kaidan, he is his own character!

Kaidan is amazing <3

Solas for sure. Vivienne is pretty awesome if you become her friend. And her insults to other party members burn. Which always makes me laugh. Vivienne is about gaining power and mastering the game, but if you become friends with her the icy exterior melts away.

Also- maybe I built Solas wrong but he's not the most powerful in my playthrough. I try to bring him along to do anything and he's always the first down. I bring IB, Viv, and Dorian, and not only does no one die but we never need to use health potions. I just can't get into to Solas because he is so bland, and it's sad because I really wanted to like him as a character.

Vivienne is interesting in that if you share her same views she can be pretty cool, if you don't however she can put her b*tch mode into overload.

Solas I found to be very intriguing, learned a lot about the elves from him and his perspective on things throughout the game is unique.

That's probably why I don't get the hate, I've never had her disapprove of much.

Most of DA:I characters turn on the ****** mode if you make them angry.

There's a very unique scene you get once you first move into skyhold if you have a decent enough disapproval with her. I hadn't talked to her after that, but I can imagine it only gets better. I'm glad they took the time to add content for not only friendships or romances, but rivalries as well. You can't please everyone with your actions, just like real life.

Solas is far more unlikeable to me at least. I tend to get on with Vivienne pretty well, she reminds me of a cross between Wynne and Morrigan. She is controlling, manipulative and thinks she knows better than everyone else, tries to mentor the protagonist much like Wynne. She is also cold and at times stand offish, like Morrigan, but despite herself she does care about the Inquisition and the people that make it up, she just hides it very well. She even cares about Cole. Plus she has some of the best put downs in the entire game. Sometimes the other party members don't even know they're being insulted.

Solas however is just as preachy as Vivienne, but with it comes a passive aggressiveness and dislike of non elves that still finds it's way through his carefully chosen dialogue.

I most like all of companions for different reasons.

Vivienne is most Not-Much-Liked, because I like fun chars with deep souls and she doesn't look like funny character at first glance. My 1st Inquizitor is "Let-Be-Mage-Free-With- Just- Little-Control" so I'm no-no to Circles but not freedom to all mages ( and bloodmages, bad mages in it) . I did help her with her personal quest with that Heart of Snow because I'm not acting cruel/bad person.

Solas..... I like him. Yes he may seems boring with this all Fade-Talk- Stuff. I was suprised when, like Sera, said he doesn't like dalish elfs ( which are like 'true elf' compared to city one which are just human with pointy ears) and I disliked him at first for this because my elf mage is proud to be dalish elf and loves her clan pretty much and so on. Later she just give him reasons to consider dalish elfs to be Not-That-Bad. He is quite cute and funny too, his banter with Sera makes me laugh every time XD.

I can see why this would bother you, but feeling too ill used might be ignoring some of the essential aspects of Vivienne's situation.

She's entitled to at least as much consideration as we offer Morrigan, whose childhood spent under Flemeth's oh so loving care (and away from any real socialization with other people) is a significant contributing factor to her aggressive Darwinist streak. A lot of people here are factoring that in when comparing the two.

Vivienne is, in so many ways, a product of being treated as a court Jester in a ridiculously cutthroat deadly environment. She wouldn't have been initially credited any agency of her own, because outside of the circle, Mages typically aren't. She had to work for every bit, carefully maneuvering every moment of her life.

My point is, she is using you here, but she doesn't see "using" someone the same way you do. She would do the same for you, because that's the kind of give and take she believes relationships are made of. That's the only standard she has.

I like them both. Vivienne is a ruthless ****** and I love it. She's a boss. Solas is wise as hell and a good adviser, even though he generally dislikes my decisions, but he's cool as well. Both are smart asses, especially together. What's not to love. I like assholes. Goody goods like Cullen bore me.

I don't really hate them to be honest but kinda annoyed with Vivienne at times. Once you know how to handle a ******, its not that annoying anymore but more funny.

I just use Solas as a walking encylopedia on anything elvish and magic (i'm sorry solas xD) and well seeing him getting teased on by the other party members makes it funny for me.

Dorian calling him an apostate hobo was the best thing ever.

I hate Vivienne, but I suppose that means she's well-written... since I hate her for her personality.

I like Solas.
