The Qun: Do You Hate It?

A reformed Qun (slightly more personal freedom, different treatment of mages and various other small tweaks) would be perfect. If a reformed Qun took over Thedas it would be a golden age never before thought of. Thedas would run like a well oiled machine and everybody would prosper.
For the current Qun though it's got it's ugly side but so does every form of government/religion in Thedas. I don't hate it in fact i am quite fond of i.

To be honest the Qun versus the Orliasian empire, reminds me a lot of our very own arguments. Of socialism versus democracy.
When you talk to Iron Bull
How do people live
No different from you they go to work, etc.
But they aren't really free
Are they really free here?
I mean they don't have free will
How much do people really have free will here
I'm paraphrasing, but that's the jist of it.

Well they tried to make the Qun more likeable in DA:I by making it accepting of transgender people and now having a laid back attitude about sex as well as removing gender restrictions on roles (as long as you call yourself that role's typical gender...wut?). They still don't let you choose how you want to live your life though and I assume they still sew shut the eyes and mouths of mages and keep them chained and collared at all times as well as lobotomizing people who don't follow the status quo. All things considered, the Qun is still one of the crappiest cultures in Thedas (if not the crappiest). My Qunari Inquisitor was a devout Andrastian
his reaction to Josephine's asking if he followed/would follow the Qun:

I don't think it would work in the real world. An ideal society like that never really would, because ideal societies like that never factor in the human element. Humanity is a variable that we, somewhat ironically, can't account for.
In game, I don't have any serious issues save for the fact that they force it onto others. I personally wouldn't join but I can see the appeal of it for some.

I have a feeling that is more Iron Bull's laid-back philosophy than the Qun's dictation. He doesn't exactly embody the views of the Qun unlike the Qunari we call 'Sten'. I liken him to someone who lives in a certain country or says they are a certain religion, but does not actually practice the customs that go along with it. (Someone who lives in America, but practices nothing 'American', knows nothing of American history, et cetera. Applicable to any nation.)
According to the Qun, everyone must know their place: The Soldier is a soldier, not a baker, not a merchant. I would believe then that the Qun would demand that women be women, men be men, et cetera.
My personal view of the Qun is that it is a way to live for someone who has lost their own wsy, but I would not personally practice or guide someone towards it.

Considering the Qun relies on the thought-police to brainwash those who stay into accepting their assigned roles, I think I will pass, a little too 1984 for my liking. I like variety and choice in life thank you very much. Sure the Andrastians have their odd exalted march here and there, but for the most part they are content to let you choose how you want to live your life.

I don't think that's right. Soldier, baker, and merchant are descriptions of function. Man and woman are not.

The Qun sounds a lot like the CIA/Saudi vision for the world.
I find it hard to hate a philosophy from a video game unless it's really in my face and really annoying, like Cerberus or Abstergo.

Hmm I'd say it was just as problematic in DAO it's just we've now been confronted with it a little more. Obviously it's been fleshed out more but the basic idea that everything about your life is chosen for you was present in DAO, talking to Bull just makes you realize the unfortunate reality of how something like that is accomplished.
I can see why the ideal would appeal to some people, the idea of everybody doing their part and being willing to sacrifice for the greater good of society certainly has a romantic appeal to it. My problem is that I don't think that the society the Qun achieves through this sacrifice is something to aspire to. The Qun gives relative safety and security of position in society but the trade is the ability to dream of a better day.
I think DAI's character Bull, Solas (through banter) and the Elf you meet on Bull's quest do a good job of balancing out the good and the bad.

There's also some Qunari who are basically sex slaves to service the entire race. There's no love, no passion.
Even Bull says that if the Qun ever conquered the south, most of the people we know and love would be destroyed. By either the reeducators poison or in the fighting itself.
I see the Qun kinda like the genophage was in Mass Effect. It's needed to control the most savage race in Thedas, but it's also evil.

I'm not a fan of their mission to force everyone to convert to the Qun.
If they want to Qun it up and if others want to join in then that's fine, they can do whatever they want, I draw the line on conquest.

I find it a fascinating fictional concept, so I don't know if 'hate' is the right word from an out-of-universe perspective. If I had to live under the Qun I'd likely be dead or a mindless slave. So I guess I would hate that.

Don't underestimate the progress that can evolve from even a little bit of stability and order, regardless of how it is obtained. It's like asking if I hate Charlemagne. A brutal man who killed tens of thousands and converted people under penalty of death to his religion. He also almost single handedly brought Europe out of the Dark Ages, and laid the foundation for modern Western civilization.
The answer is going to depend on how short sighted I feel like being on any particular day.
