I like it on an ideological level, not on a practical one.

You could do worse in Thedas though, IMO.

To be honest the Qun versus the Orliasian empire, reminds me a lot of our very own arguments. Of socialism versus democracy.

When you talk to Iron Bull

How do people live

No different from you they go to work, etc.

But they aren't really free

Are they really free here?

I mean they don't have free will

How much do people really have free will here

I'm paraphrasing, but that's the jist of it.

The difference between the Qun and something like living in Ferelden is that the people living under the Qun aren't allowed to really voice any kind of disinterest or dislike about their system, or they get reeducated (and if that fails, you're effectively lobotomized and made into a vegetable). That's not the case in any of the known human kingdoms.

So yeah, the commoner in Orlais or Rivain has a little more free will than your average Qunari worker.

You have free will in the Qun you can chose to shut up and do as you are told.

Well ... they do not have families, they do not give their children names, hold the "function" of a person higher than his/her personality? They brainwash people if they criticize something, or just even doubt aka think for themselves. And much more...

In fact one of my favorite parts in DA2 is to first pi$$ off the Artischock, and then kill him in the end. What a pleasure. Isabelle, go get some of their other "holy" books as well, I'll help you gladly. Also would be wonderful if they invaded the next game and we'd be able to side with "uuhhh evil" Tevinter and crush them. Surely this would be considered the "uuhhh evil" choice by Bioware...but not in my book!

EXALTED MARCH TO PAR VOLLEN! Burn the heretics. Kill the horned ones. Purge the unbelievers! The Maker and Andraste, and her Mabari will greatly approve!

Though only after Iron Bull's personal story I felt a bit of pity for them horned ones ... after I saw their poorly animated Dreadnought that ... was not very impressive. Maybe the infamous Qun is a lot less fearsome as they would like to be ...

No, I don´t hate the Qun. I don´t really like or dislike the Qun, I understand it is a different concept of a different society with different organization, political and religious views and that you have to either be born on the Qun or be raised from a very early stage of your life under the Qun in order to have a deeper understanding on how it works and a proper opinion about it.

One second I'm a Qun, then suddenly the qun is me. The idea behind it is not bad, just different. Everyone does what they suppose to. Everyone helps and supports each other and such. I wouldn't be in one, but at least, I can see why it's appealing to others such as elves who find equality within the Qun that they can't find in the human society.

The Qun is terrible. I'd like nothing more than to slaughter all of them and burn their book right in front of them before they die

You have free will in the Qun you can chose to shut up and do as you are told.

And if you don't like the job they assign you based on arbitrarily chosen criteria, you get reeducated. If that fails, you become a vegetable.

Such choice.

Its hardly arbitrarily, the ones who make the choice, take into account the child's inclinations, skills, talents and try to find the best role for them to succeed.  If they are inclined to work with their hands, work with plants, or if they should be a builder, a warrior, a blacksmith.   The idea of guiding them at a young age in those inclinations is an old one in many stories.  In principle I agree with that type of guiding.

It sounds good on paper, but it's hardly a sound practice in reality.

If a kid likes hitting things (which Bull says is pretty much the reason he was chosen for his job), how does that automatically mean he'd be a good soldier? He could just be an a**hole. A good soldier not only knows how to fight, but also how to look at a situation and deal with it in the best possible manner, how to listen, and how to follow procedure.

Well, they certainly pulled no punches in telling people how shitty life is under the Qun. Just ask Iron Bull what would happen if the Qunari took over Ferelden and Orlais..

I view the war between Tevintor and the Qun as Evil vs Evil though I wonder about the people the Qunari came form given they apparently sent the Qunari fleeing.

I don't think that's right. Soldier, baker, and merchant are descriptions of function. Man and woman are not.

Yes they are, you either give birth or you impregnate.

Bull is not a soldier. He is a spy.His real name is Hisraad (don't know if that is how it's spelt),which means "liar".

Most people in this society don't get the job they are predisposed for. Most people hate their jobs and stick to it because the alternative may be starvation or a "worse" job,and shame.Even the idea of a better or worse kind of job doesn't have to exist, but it does.

I'd hate to be a mage under the Qun. They seem a tad bit excessive in their treatment of mages.
