Playing a human female mage, I spent the entire game chatting up Sera. I liked her mischievousness and that she didn't have a stick up her butt like most of the other companions. Every conversation with her I always picked the romantic conversation icon, and making all the choices through the game that she approved of. I spent lots of quality roof time with her, and periodically would check in and select the romantic option. Every time she said she liked me but wanted to run around some more together and see what happened. I chatted her up after every side quest and main quest, and took her with me on 80% of quests. Then the last stop in right before heading to the War Room to launch the final fight, suddenly there was no more romantic option available for her. I'd shut every body else down, being the monogamous sort, so I ended the game with no pleasant company in my quarters. What the heck? I'm a lonely little inquisitor.

It sounds like something has gone wrong with the game. You should be able to get onto the romance fairly early after getting to Skyhold.

You didn't mention how approval was with her? Maybe you just never made the threshold?

I looked in DAI and never could find where it showed the companion approval. It was right on each characters record in DA2, but I was UTL in DAI. I looked under Character record in all the categories and was unable to locate it. I assume though that it should have been high, because I made sure she approved of the lions share of my choices, and the ones she didn't, were only "slightly disapproves". Also the odd thing is after returning from Arbor, the romance icon wasn't even available for her anymore and suddenly she's just my buddy, like I'd cut off the romance and just gone the friend route with her.

Unlike the previous two DA games, there's no visible gauge for approval. But if you received a majority of approval from her, you should be on a good terms.

Should have had at least 80% approval from her based on her approving of my choices, and every time I talked to her and selected the flirt option (heart) she'd say she liked me a lot but wanted to run around together some more and see what happened. Then I come back from to Skyhold from Arbor Wilds and go to talk to her, and suddenly the flirt option isn't even there to select anymore. I think the game glitched.

You should have gotten the romance scenes a long time before Arbor Wilds. It seems you just progressed the main story too much without locking in the romance.

I made that mistake when I first played. Man I was bummed!

You need to get her approval right up there, to get the most out of the romance you should lock it in before Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts (or Here Lies the Abyss) depending on which mission you choose first.

The easiest way to do it is to do all of her war table ops, be relentless and brutal in judgments, help the little people in the Hinterlands (so save all of that until after you've recruited her). Flirt with Scout Harding too, she loves that.

It's also easier if you play as a Qunari, I cannot for the life of me get why she wets her breeches over them, they're ugly and it takes hours to create a half-decent looking one. But it's each to their own, innit? ;)

Ah, I bet it's because I didn't get all of her war table ops done. I'm pretty sure there was one up NW in Orlais that I never did that was a follow up to the Needs Bees one in SE Ferelden. Doh! Well Ironically I just started a second playthrough as a female Qunari mage, so I guess we'll try it again. :)

Be sure you recruit Viv, even if you never talk to her again.

I've noticed Approvals as a whole are still buggy. Many people have experienced similar situations with other characters where they flat out stop recognizing approval gains, making any additional content - including romances - impossible to get.

It's happened to me with both Dorian and Blackwall. I've made a number of feedback posts on the topic to let the devs know but haven't seen any sort of response on the matter, so hard to say what's really on beyond that.

You don't actually need to do all of her war table ops but it helps a hell of a lot especially if you make decisions that pees her off.

Some advice for the Red Jenny war table ops: when you get up to "Red Jenny and the Bad Goods" use Leliana to do it, if you use any body else the ops will stop until you unlock her romance, because the outcome of that particular op goes cold. It doesn't help if you're using those missions to get her romance, another mistake I made on my first play through.

Also, hate to break it to you but playing as a human is nowhere near as good as playing as a dwarf or Qunari in relation to her romance.

Oh, and sometimes it isn't the approval. After the "cookie" scene, talk to her again. Exhaust every dialogue option, that usually triggers it.

Well I did talk to her after every quest and side quest, always used the flirty responses, exhausted all conversation options, spent lots of roof time with her, had the cookie conversation (with all Sera approves feedback) and completed her first war table item. The only thing I didn't do was the 2nd war table item. I also made save games before each judgement I passed, and if she didn't like what I picked, I reloaded the game and picked an option she did approve of. So it really appears the romance with her should have triggered.

I'm playing a 2nd time through now, this time as a Qunari female mage, but I'm reluctant to try to romance Sera again if the romance isn't going to trigger. 107 hours is a long time to invest just to get the cold shoulder at bar closing time. ;)

For some odd reason, when you beat the game, your companions seem boring. You're actually locked out of discussing certain topics with them. All they'll ever talk about is the aftermath of the ending.

Even your romance will up and forget about you. I suggest saving before doing the final mission. That said, you should just make decisions that Sera agrees with. I know she greatly approves of you issuing harsher punishments in the judgement scenarios.

Also if you do initiate her romantic quest, make sure you accept Vivienne's suggestion. If you want to see more cleavage and less clothes that is. If not then decline it.

I agree. There's a stark difference playing a human vs a Qun or Dwarf. She a flirt when it comes to those two.

Vivienne isn't really necessary for the Sera romance

Far out superfuzz, and I thought I was crazy for the lengths I went to romance her. :P I'm glad I'm not the only one enthralled by this sexy, perfect video game character.

To start with it was natural to get her approval. Funny responses, harsh punishments, etc. But then she would get shitty if I chose alliances with mages/Templars rather than enslavement... so naturally, I reloaded, started again. You have to be careful with her because she's unpredictable. You would think she'd be all for exiling the Wardens after she expresses her dislike of them, yeah? Wrong. She greatly disapproves of that.

But anyway, from the sounds of things, you've done pretty much everything you need to do in order to romance her. Maybe you do need to do a couple more war table ops.

They are connected, but the romance does not suffer if Viv is not recruited or you reject her suggestion.

Well I just finished my 2nd play through, this time as a female Qunari mage, and sure enough Sara is all gaga for Qunari. Lot's of flirt comments she makes to you about being tall, and one argument between the two of you about love that has quite the comical ending. I won't spoil it for for those who haven't done it, but if you woo Sara as a Qunari, when she throws out a bunch of stuff during the argument about loving this and loving that about you, make sure you pick the "love her too" response. Funny stuff! :)

I can't say what's going wrong in your case.

But I deny that playing as a human female is harder. I have a hard time getting rid of her flirt options.

I flirted with her in the tavern in Haven where she said something about "Miss Trevelyan is cheeky". Since that time the game tries to hook me up with her at any given chance. Maybe its because it was the first flirt I did. I ignored Josephine at that point.
