Court approval is a shitty timer mechanic. It flips around when talking to people. It drops because of your race. It threatens to kill the mission altogether? It goes down while you're trying to solve the mission???? I'll kill the empress myself just to get this stupid mission over with. Where is that option? I have a bow...

How do you feel about having to get back to the party? I also hated that part.

The dance was ridiculous. I ended up with 11 by the end. Punished for playing the damn game. That's what gamers want. Then of course after it's all over I get multiple conflicting approval messages, cole approves, cole greatly disapproves. I feel emotionally abused. I just don't care any more because there's no way to predict any of it without metagaming. That's how to design a game, metagaming is the only way to win, that or luck.

yer I didn't like that part of the game I love to explore whole areas just look for loot and other bits but every time I got somewhere the bloody time was dropped so low I had to run back. shouldn't be a timer for court approval at all

Once I learned to pace my time away from the party, it became much easier. Finished the quest with 98 favor as a dwarf. ![]()
Well, admit it, it is a game and you are not a good player.
It's a tricky gameplay change not done before or since in a DA game. It comes out of nowhere and it can be strange the first time through. Try being nice, it doesn't hurt. Being a gamer shouldn't become a competition for single player, unless you're into E-Sports. Some folks have an easier time with some things than others.

I hate the fact that if you have to watch what you say. The first time I tried I got kicked out after the dance.

It's the Orlesian court. What did you expect? Josephine warns you as you get in and Leliana warns you again after you get introduced to the Empress.

Getting secrets for Leliana and tossing the coins was enough for me to stay afloat. I didn't watch what I say, in fact almost all conversations I lost approval because my dwarf inquisitor doesn't pull any punches and gets straight to the point
It's possible to complete without being diplomatic but I did have to rush through the areas outside the party a little.

See, that's what I hate. I can't think of a gaming experience in which "rushed" and "fun" fit the description.

Timed missions tend to be a pain in the butt in general. I'm not a big fan of them.
The only thing I can honestly say I really disliked about that portion of the game was the abrupt change of gameplay with very little time to get used to it.

I like the quest and I'm fine with the whole needing to gain court approval thing. I'm perfectly fine with court approval being influenced by race, I think it's great that your race influences how people percieve you in the game. If anything, I want more reactions to class and race in the game. I also like that your behavior will affect how you're percieved.
I just wish I could explore Halamshiral without having a timer telling me that I need to hurry up.

That's the issue. I'm fine with all that stuff until it hinders me and forces me to rush my exploration. Then it becomes some crap game mechanic that should have landed on the cutting room floor,

Or at least been given some game time before that point. I can think of several chances the devs could have taken to give us smaller segments like that which are more forgiving to the player. I would have started with a much less story-significant quest to being with. Like introducing the just the favor mechanic before introducing the timer aspect. Then maybe a second quest where they introduce the timer aspect as well. And have all of this before Wicked Hearts.
Things like that. While I don't argue that this leaves a lot to be desired (reminds me of the stealth segment in MotA, only without the second option,) it could have been executed better. If the devs want to throw in mechanic changes, doing it like this wasn't the best way, for sure.

1st time doing the quest the other night. I explored everywhere, got almost all collectables/side missions, and still gain full approval as a Qunari. Unless being brash gets you a LOT of disapproval, I really don't see how this quest can be hard...
What "I" hated was the limited amount of those friggin Hallas! Didn't get to end the quest how I wanted because I couldn't open Celine's stupid bedroom...

The weak point of this mechanics was imo the EVERYONE DISAPPROVES if you went away for as little as a minute, made largely pointless when you could also get so many dirt secrets it's easy to max the meter out and then some... but you don't find this out until near the end. Made things stupid tense rather than fun tense. The dialogue choices having effect on approval were nice touch, imo, and worked well with the theme.
I feel it'd be better if entering one of these 'do not go' zones incurred a larger, single approval hit than the time based thing they went with, as their approach was easy to manipulate in stupid/gamey ways.
The halla keys thing was also questionable in execution. If at the start of the zone you hand me one of these and show that there's 10 in total to find, you may want to mention that I'm going to need 4-5 of these things for any door that actually matter...

What would really help would be getting actual numbers. How much is "slightly approves" and how much is "greatly disapproves"? Can I get the total displayed, too?
For example, the message could look like this: "You have 10 approval with XYZ now (-30)". That might not look as smooth as what we have currently but it would be vastly more useful.

Easy way to gain approval: don't rush with the first bell(s), be at least fashionably late. That's 20-40 points right there.

I am surprised. I really liked this map.
There was a bit more exiting role playing in this map. You know, the way you had to be careful about what you said to whom and when.
And I liked the change from mountains, caves, plains and deserts. It lets you get closer to the center of power as you never really do in games. Celine was masterfull created. Illustrating her age with the skin arround her mouth was perfect, and yet she was still beautiful.
The map it self is a fantastic piece of work. A palace of grace and elegance. I really had this feeling of being there. I wonder how much french culture and history the creators had to study? It was exiting to walk these halls.
The crowd (guests) also felt relatively alive. The atmosphere was created well.
No, this is definetely one of the better maps in the game.

Loved this quest. It was completely different than anything else in the game and it was sooo welcome.
EXCEPT the timer on court approval. I would have much preferred to chat with people and play the game more to gain approval than gain approval easily and then worry about the approval going downhill while checking out rooms and looting.

Me too! I felt that the segment was hurt by the timer. The favor mechanic was a nice touch, but the timer makes it less fun early on. That place is amazing looking and I wanted a little more freedom to explore. Or at least have the timer more forgiving.
After you get downstairs and out to the Courtyard, then I notice that the favor drop slowed down quite a bit. If you can build up the favor via giving gossip to Leliana, then the latter half is very easy. That's also when I started to have a lot more fun.

Can't say I was a fan of the Approval rate timer as well especially with my OCD explorer tendencies. I did figure out the quickest way to get an ok ending and just do that. But I've never even bothered 100%ing the side quests there. Just too much together. :/
I mean it was a nice change of pace from the typical game play. But the "timer" kind of kills it for me.
