After doing a bit of research about mage specializations, I finally settled for Knight-Enchanter. Lots of people seem to think that one is OP. I can see why they would think that. With a few strategic ability choices and a bit of practice you can achieve 100% Barrier up-time and become pretty much invincible. At least in theory. What I've seen in practice so far is extremely disappointing however. My character doesn't hit with her Spirit Blade when I hit the hotkey. No. Nono. Nonono. If only! Ha! First she moves to the officially sanctioned Spirit Blade attack position - which isn't simply in melee range but at certain specific spots that are somewhere around the enemy. If the enemy moves... or a rock gets in the way... or the tank gets in the way... or hell if I know (or care)... that little positioning dance can take up to 10 seconds. 10 seconds in which her Barrier ticks away, she gets shot at and does zero damage. And I'm sitting there gnashing my teeth while the path-finding algorithm derps around. This is absolutely ridiculous!
Spirit Blade seems like a lot of Fail

It is not OP in the damage sense, it is OP in the invulnerability one (i.e. you cannot die). A different kind of OP (and a boring one at that). For what it concerns damage they are mediocre at best (actually the worst of the mage specs for it).
With the last change on Spirit Blade not working for combos (Bioware odd choice) KE is even more weak as far as damage potential and the only "power" part of the spec is the invulnerability. Remove that and KE practically have nothing at all remaining.

You're probably using it in the tactical mode. You should switch to the 1st person mode when you want to spam it. Tac cam AI does terrible job at it.

This. The RoF is completely different out of tac mode.
They also should never have nerfed Spirit Blade combos given the 8 hotkey/button limit. And if they were going to nerf it, they shold have waited past patch 2 until, you know, they actually fixed important stuff. Sigh.

And if it is to be overpowered? There'll always be the strongest and the weakest. This business balance until it sounds weird. You will punish something because of something else that is not as good or what is good in another kind of situation? The world does not work that way.
Also if this is a single player cRPG roles are the core of the gameplay of a game like DA:I and given this a skill like Fade Shield completely breaks the balance on those roles. There's nothing inherently wrong on a build being OP in a single player game if that OPenedness is tied to specific roles and ability on the player, but there's an huge problem (and a skill is broken) when something breaks those roles and requires no ability at all on the player's part but it is just the automatic result of taking a single skill on a tree.
Now consider Fade Shield: it requires no ability whatsoever to come up with a build that can use it efficiently, and compare that skill against other similar ones in the warrior's trees (warrior being the role that is supposed to tank the best in the game) and you will notice that FS is leaps and bounds above something like Shield Wall for example (it has no drawbacks whatsoever on using it - while SW requires stamina, it works on damage done - while SW works on a fixed basis hence much weaker, +barrier is much more powerful than +guard since it shields also for AOE and elemental effects). Given this FS is obviously a broken skill as it requires no ability on the part of the player to use it in a build well outside of taking the skill itself and it completely breaks the roles in the game (making a class that isn't supposed to tank more powerful at it than a tank role class itself).
Also an Assassin's build can be really really powerful (even OP) but the difference is that the build will still be inside the role of a rogue (you could never tank or CC control better than a warrior or a mage, for example) and it requires ability on the part of the player to make it work (it doesn't become OP just because you take a single skill and you are OP already).
A skill CAN be broken on a single player game. Thinking otherwise would mean that developers that create single player cRPGs could just put skills that have no balance whatsoever one vs. the other and render the character immortal just because it is a single player game so balance doesn't matter. This is clearly not the case.

I did not notice a difference between normal and tactical view. The attacks weren't immediate in either mode. The character always positioned herself first. Depending on the enemy that could take forever. Granted, I may have tested it less against human opponents but more against large demons, wyvern and other unwieldy critters. There's a lot less derping against humans.

I've never encountered what you're describing. At worst, I've had the spirit blade animation be very slow...sometimes.
Spirit Blade is filler. It's what your character spams to lower cooldowns of your better barrier filling skills, like Fade Cloak and Fire Mine.

The 10 seconds I spoke of in the OP were not a random number. I actually counted the seconds.

I have never, ever waited 10 seconds for a SB to start hitting things. Maybe if you posted a video of what's happening, some of us would be able to identify the problem?

Lol? Your game is broke...something is definitely broke. The 10 seconds I spoke of in the OP were not a random number. I actually counted the seconds.
Let's just say "If what you are describing is actually true, it's likely happened to less than 5% of the community without some operator error involved".

I don't see how me waiting for the path finding algorithm to find a path constitutes an operator error. And I'm feeling a bit insulted now, if I my add that.

A lot of people, myself included, have used KE and foudn that as soon as we push the spirit blade button the character swings the spirit blade instantly, with no need to adjust for pathing. Clearly, there is a glitch in your game of some sort.

I recommend using Fade step, in or out of tactical cam, to close with an enemy you plan on attacking with Spirit Blade.

My experience was like pecoes'. If I tried to use Spirit Blade, Vivienne would wander around the enemy, seemingly to get to a particular spot. I finally gave up on the spell.
You aren't alone pecoes!
