I wonder if that's because you're the Herald, time travel isn't all that accurate, or the fact you have a god in your party.

My theory is it's Back to the Future and time alters slowly.

Anyway, conscription felt like the right decision.

With conscription, the mages pay their debt for the war and can walk out of the conflict with clean slates. That will go a long way to mending the wounds from the war I think.

Pretty much, yeah.

I could never ally with the Templars even if the game somehow made me feel bad for them despite my chief desire going into the game was to annihilate them.

Even so the Inquisition conscripted the mages because they needed to be reminded that freedom means, "Being treated like everybody else" not "I am better than other people."
My Inquisitor had to eat some serious crow there after his arguments with Vivienne.

Good Lord, Leliana and Alistair are both Pro-Mage, two of the nicest people in Thedas and they have people talking about blood magic in the tavern and how human sacrifice is okay because "they use us in wars."

If you conscript them the order is disbanded and you will get loyal men and woman who will never rebel against you like some mages.
And isnt hironic that the templars now answer to a mage?

I have always sided with the mages in all the games but after what I saw in Redcliff Alexius had to die, and I took the mages as prisoners but my inquisitor was a qunari mage (head canon who converted to the Qun after a long talk with The Iron Bull) and I've always been against the Qun..ssoooo..yea lol :\

Yeah, but a bunch of men, women, and children will become slaves who die horribly.

It's a sucky situation all round.

A pity you can't do both missions.

Well women, men and chilrem will die or become slaves in the templar side too.
But you will sabe more people in the templar side, and Dorian say that some mages escape Redcliff before the conversion.

Your mage cant convert to the Qun, you would need to take off your tongue, sew your own mouth and use a leash.

I accepted the mages as allies, and none of them rebelled against me.

And if you want to try to change the slavery system in Tevinter, the templar side will help you too.

Mages are dangerous. Circles are for their own safety and for the safety of Thedas.

Good for you. Only the most naïve people could actually come out of that future and say "Hey, I know I just saw a terrible future where mages rules the earth and the consequences of mages making their own decisions = death and slavery for all, but I don't care: Mages, keep rebelling! I won't pull you back in line!"

The moment they got their freedom, they sold it to Tevinter and doomed the world (for one year). We may have erased that year, but that doesn't mean it didn't occur. And if we choose to not allow that future to happen, we go with the Templars... And the mages (even the Tevinter hesitant ones) stay with Fiona... Who comes to attack Haven personally. At least the Templars had to be tricked, purged and corrupted to go bad (And mind you, Red Lyrium can affect anyone) but the mages willingly went to war against the Inquisition.

After the episode with Alexius, I did not expect myself to ally with the Mages despite everything in my being protesting otherwise. Now I just chalk it up to the Anti-Libertarian agenda that Bioware forcefully pushes with their every entry into the series. Not unlike their hatred of the Dalish.

It's a weird bridge that I've crossed as someone invested in the narrative of the mage cause. I cannot make excuses for Fiona's desperate play but I understand it.

I am pro mage myself and I also conscripted the mages. Fiona was THE Grand Enchanter of the southern mages and former grey warden. She already had shelter from the king/queen of Ferelden and was in Redcliff- the most defensible castle in Ferelden.

Seeing the future didn't help and I thought conscripting them (at least temporily) would be nice for everyone. The rebels could be investigated and it should appease the masses.

I will admit, I liked the turn between mages and templars that was introduced in this game.

Historically, the Templars have always come across as unnecessarily oppressive and genocidal.  The attempts in Dragon Age 2 to show the blood mage threat didn't really come across to me.  Even Merrill and your dead mother (at the hands of a mage) didn't work, simply because either you - or your sister - were a mage.  The crazily oppressive Templars and power-mad Meredith just overshadowed those events.

Characters now spoke to the extent of that lyrium addiction and how templars could provide mages sanctuary from an outside world that greatly fears them.  Even former templars such as Cullen that recognized how the order may have lost sight of that original intent.  This was the first time that I really felt like the two sides were more balanced.  I will admit I have not gone the templar route yet, just out of instinct over the past two games - I allied with the mages.  I never felt like it was the right decision.  I am going to give the Templars a shot here on my next playthrough.

I like that it gave you the choice when diving into both sides. You can be pro-mage and still go with the Templar and you can be anti-mage and still go with the Mages, choosing one doesn't mean you're forced into their route like DA2 set itself to be. My one regret about siding with Mages is that you can't judge Fiona once you get to Skyhold.

I prefer Champions of the Just to In Hushed Whispers and much, much prefer Set Barris to Fiona.

But one thing will keep me from siding with the Templars ever again: the f****** Envy Demon.

I can understand why Fiona and even Alexius chose their actions and condemn The Elder One for undermining and corrupting the Mages, so I choose to ally with them and also not kill/tranquil Alexius. The Inquisitor I was playing as was also big on mercy and second chances (also the reason she didn't exile the Wardens after all they did). And my Inquisitor also figured that if the Mages went this far when they were in gilded cages, it's most likely going to be worse if she puts them in literal cages.

I've always sided with the mages throughout the entire series and I generally still do but I swear it gets harder.

This is the only game thus far that has made me feel like it's not a completely ludicrous choice to be a mage and side with the templars. For ONCE. But yet- I still can't but be upset that Fiona made such a decision I suppose. Who trusts Tevinter? I guess only the most desperate. I know that the Inquisator is told that Alexius interfered with her choices/situation via his time travel meddling but in my mind almost nothing would make me, a mage, invest in any relationship with Tevinter. If anything being completely logical about the hierarchy of Tevinter you should realize that you're going to be nothing but a pool of magic slaves in good ol' Vinter land- which is precisely what you abhor about living in Circles in Fereldan, Free Marches and Orlais, that you lack freedom. But oh, yeah lets do it for Tevinter! Also it's a bad decision because you now have a whopping big black mark on your reputation to add to the fact that there is already a war and your group is persona non grata and you're adding justification for every single accusation against your group. It's almost like an Orsino at the end of DA2 move. Almost.

Fiona needed some Martin Luther King Jr  :pinched:
