I have seen "auto-aim" mentioned a number of times but I have never been clear on what that is. What I have found, especially when playing as a soldier (xbox), is that often when I scope in on some target the camera will pan along the path the target is moving, only the cross hairs will be either to the left of right of the target. Trying to actually center on the target becomes a pain. Is this what is referred to as auto-aim? (And, if so, shouldn't it be called auto-anti-aim?)

Aim Assist (incorrectly referred to as auto-aim) is a term for an underlying game mechanic used in shooters on consoles. Generally, players use a controller on consoles, and a keyboard and mouse on PC. Since controller anolog sticks are generally slower and less precise than a mouse, game developers use "aim assist" to help the player be more accurate when shooting enemies.

Generally, aim-assist will "lock on" more accurately an enemy if your weapon's cross-hairs are on the enemy. When done right, such as in the Halo series, you do not even know there is an aim assist since it can be so subtle. In extreme cases, such as Mass Effect 2, aim assist will target the nearest enemy and sometimes, like in the extreme case you experienced, even track the enemy as he moves.

Mass Effect 3 improved the aim assist, although it can still be frustrating when you are trying to scope down a Ravager and end up targeting a swarmer.

lol Yeah there's nothing worse than using a sniper rifle like the Widow, Kishock or Black Widow etc to target the Ravager pwning your ass and hitting a Swarmer instead,

Good times.
