I ran some tests with saving and reloading. I tried 30 times (counted) and not once did I get better stats. Is the 40% chance somehow bugged?
40% chance for master crafting bugged?

AFAIK the mastercrafting elements are determined upon pickup, not on craft, so, savescumming in the underforge doesn't work, you'd have to test with multiple 40% chance items to truly test.

The chance variable is screwy. I remember in my first full game I was getting masterworks at one point on all my vanguard armors. I forget what I was using. I used that duping trick to get all my ores because I had zero desire to run about wasting hours of time farming them. And I did it with something that was a master work material. I wish I remembered what it was because I suspect the material I used might actually be the thing that caused this consistent masterwork creation. One I achieved it, I think I missed once but every time after that was a masterwork for armors. I made several vanguards. I might have even gotten it for a weapon but I can't remember. Since that game I haven't had that happen again. In fact, I think I might have gotten one masterwork since then and that's it. So for 40% when you make ten armors, four of them should be masterworks, right? If that is what the material says then four should be out of ten. I used the same item due to duping that was supposed to give a 40% chance and used it on 3 mage armors, 4 vanguard armors, and I think two weapons. One masterwork with a 40% chance. Luckily I don't need those stats because of higher levels and basically good armors and not playing on harder levels. But the system or the percentage is not working properly. Just another bug I think or wrong numbers added into the system? Like how they had to change something in a patch to 25% from .25% because someone clearly didn't understand that the percent or the decimal was already part of the calculation.
If it is determined on pickup then I guess the item I picked up that got me all the armor was indeed determined to be masterwork.

I had this same problem and seemed to have fixed it. I blew through 14 crit craft components and didn't get *ONE* crit craft. The only way I could fix it was by using that perfect essence thing. The one with the 100% chance to crit. After I used that it seemed to reset the bug and was able to get master crafts off the 40% and lower ones again.
But yeah, the system they have is borked.

Each different crafting mat has its own unique sequence of outcomes, which is created once. Saving and reloading doesn't change those outcomes, so you can't savescum your way to a 100% success rate. What you CAN do is craft a sequence of items all using the same mat, and note down which were successful. Then reload the game and craft throwaway items until you get to the point in the sequence where the success kicks in.
This. I asked the same question in the customization forum. Turns out that the chance for the materials to give masterwork is determined when you pick them up, not when you use them. That means that as soon as they are in your inventory, the game decides whether that material will give a successful masterwork or not.
So there is no way of saving and reloading to get a successful masterwork with all of your materials. The only workaround I have found is to craft basic stuff (say, tier 1 weapons) with the masterwork material until you get and successful one. Then reload and craft useless stuff until you get to the one that gives the successful masterwork.
It is a pretty annoying system. They made it like so to avoid people form getting successful masterworks out of all of their materials by simply saving and reloading, although the game gives you plenty enough materials to secure yourself a good amount of masterwork items.

Ah cheers for this.

if you want Masterwork materials just dupe the chest in the Still Ruins (Western Approach) you get 10 tier 3 cloth, 10 tier 3 metal, and 3 40% masterwork bark) leave the leather leave the ruin and come back inside and go open the chest again. Yeah you will lose your materials in crafting, but you can keep trying with infinite masterwork items. Or you could just reload sell your masterwork mats u were using, and go get 3 more form the chest again and keep going till you get the proc.
