No matter how well I set up my tank on 1 side and 2H War and DW Rogue on the other, the melee DPS will inevitably move from the BACK of the enemy to the SIDE or FRONT! Then they of course the take a lot of damage. This especially happens if i place them behind and then tell them to use an ability. It really seems like they will not use it until they get in front.

I am playing on hard. I cant imagine playing on nightmare with anything but 1 tank and 3 ranged characters.

Anyone have any suggestions?

From what I've heard, DW Rogues get rekt on Nightmare. 1 Tank and 3 Ranged Characters is the way to go, turn off all AI Tactics and micro everything.

Suggestion: Buy Tactician's Renewal, become an Archer.

DW rogues are fine on nightmare... probably the most overpowered class in the game. If you are having trouble staying alive it's because you probably arent playing the class properly.

Honestly? Micro them. Not much else you can do-- the AI in this game is disgraceful.

Because standing behind something and hitting it is so hard..oh wait, with DAI it is!

That's the problem, I do micro them! I set up behind a monster, tell them to attack or use ability, and they don't hit or use ability until they rotate back around to the side or even front. :(

What do you mean by "i micro them" ?

If you talk about dragon leg i have notified the same problem... but with Pride demon, no problem, whey attack from behind if i place them...

it was the same in DAI, and DA2 against Dragons, but in those games, placing your thieve was more practical because there was a circle on the ground on each enemy (with the flank / sneaky attack position indicator - le cercle au sol avec indicateur de position d'attaque de flanc ou sournoise)... there was also an thieve capacity which increase the facility to do flank / sneaky attack (attaques sournoises)

On my side and damages, I don't have problem with the dual weapon rogue (Cole and Sera are incredibly powerful), they cut a dragon in small pieces of beef, same with Warrior 1H/2H ...

PS : How can we see the difference between normal and critical hit in the battlefield (special color ? Red may be) ?

Critical hit numbers show up in larger font compared to non-critical hits.

I mean I micromanage them. Pause game every second and issue commands to all characters after every action.

Most of the people who play these godly DW rogues do so 100% in action more. They don't ever control their party. All four characters end up at half health, but they sure wrecked that random group of Templars for their YouTube video. I guess they prefer running back to camp every 10 minutes to playing the game tactically and never having a single character take damage.

Then they come on the forums and tell you that you suck when you complain because the AI keeps running your rogue into a cleave when you have the gall to play non-action-y for half a second.

There's a thing called hold position. Use it.

It seems to me that bioware has never been particularly stellar in the AI department. In DA:O, it took a modder to actually make it so that rogues, under the AI, would seek to get behind enemies. Since it WAS done by the modder, and worked fine, that shows that it can't be THAT hard to achieve.

So a request for bioware, for a future patch: concentrate on common-sense improvements to combat AI. Things like:

-Melee rogues should seek to attack the enemy from behind, when possible

-Ranged characters and mages should seek to keep their distance to the enemy, and not run up right next to an enemy

Now that you've taken so much control out of the player's hand, with the severely pared down tactics management, AND modding for this game, as I've heard, is difficult, it falls upon you to fix the combat AI. If you can't do it, hire some of the AI modders from the previous games to do it for you.

It's always a shame when playability is compromized on what is otherwise a great game, because not enough attention was paid to the AI.

For Rogue, use preference in tactics for : surprise attack (dual dagger -> 1st power on the left) it is a flank/sneaky attack if you read the description...

And if Cole (assassin) is furtive (invisible) any attack is mostly a flank attack, or critical hit if you have chosen the good upgrades...

About the tactics

In fact it would be great if we could have the same tactics management than in DA2, and DAI (with 15 rows)...

Tactic 1 :

More than 3 enemy - -> launch fireball

Tactic 2 :

More than 3 allies with Health < 25% -> use health grenade or Regain (Knight concentration care power)

Tactic 3 :

Enemy health < 50% -> Spiritual mark...

Tactic 4 :

Enemy health < 50% -> go to tactic 5

Tactic 5 :

More than 3 enemies  -> use living bomb (bombe vivante)

Tactic 6 (special warrior) :

Enemy attack Mage/Thieve -> attack enemy...

Tactics in this game can't be fine tuned like in DA2 and even in DAI... In DAI and DA2, we could personalize extremly the AI of the teammates... They have simplified ttactics in DAI so even a 5year old child can use them... But DAI isn't a game for 5years old childs...
