If he retakes Starkhaven, which he did in my canon playthrough, wouldn't he be obligated to either renounce his vows to the Chantry, or abdicate in favor of someone that could produce an heir? I didn't romance him but that was just on my mind.

Well, yeah. That's the whole conflict of his character in a nutshell: Obey his duty to family and go back on his oath, or obey his oath to the Chantry and abandon his family's legacy.
