This is one of those thing you just have to wait to pass. Any extra rest you can get along with lots of fluids and healthy comfort foods is a must. Ask your doctor what over the counter cold/flu meds are right for you. I like Mucinex, Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold Medicine, generic cough drops and nasal spray. Try and have family or friends look in on you, if possible. Just tell them not to get too close...

Unless I am vomiting or got the runs, I typically work through illnesses.

As for non-prescription, warm honey, lemon and whiskey (or rum) works a treat for sore throats.
Hot herbal tea is lovely for colds.
After the third day, I generally crave very hot wings. It's just nice to actually taste something at that point.

I rest and let my body do the work, this has always defeated the flu in three days or less. No need for any medicine, your body is designed to deal with that crap with no outside help whatsoever.
Just drink enough water and eat healthily.

Chamomile.

It has sedative, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial agents, so it's good for the the cold, flu and whatnot.
You can make a nice tea or inhale the steam. I dunno. ![]()

Real Sudafed is good for colds. In the US you have to ask the pharmacist and sign a form.

Hot, peppery foods do help clear the sinuses.

Some OTC medications are for symptom relief, not treatment. Aside from Tamiflu, no one here is posting anything curative. But, the only thing to do is fluids and rest.
I have frequent URIs. So, usually I go to the doctor for treatment. A 5-day Z-pack helps to accelerate convalescence, but the rationale for an antibiotic is mostly to be a pneumonia prophylactic.

They've since replaced it with a wimpy impostor tea by that name that does nothing.

Yes, because antibiotics are not effective against viruses, they will only be added for secondary bacterial infections...

Chamomile.
Or Precaution. Don't sweat and go into the windy open area, proper clothing, staying away from sick people (closing your mouth) etc.

I like to increase my spicy food intake if I start to feel a cold or flu starting up so that those little invaders get buried alive in the unwelcoming fires of spicy food lava.

One method that seems to be effective in providing temporary relief for a sore throat is to gargle hot (but not scalding) salt water; it's only a temporary fix, but most of dealing with a common cold is just treating symptoms plus getting enough fluids and rest until the damn thing goes away. I actually learned this remedy from my mom, but there seems to be empirical evidence behind it now.

I used to get really sick with the flu, and it would invariably head into my chest, leaving me coughing for a few weeks. No fun!
I started taking daily Vitamin C to augment my diet, drinking a lot of water, and washing my hands after touching public surfaces and before eating. Now I rarely get sick, and if I do feel something coming on, I double the C and it's gone in 24 hours. A little extra time each day but it saves me a lot of downtime and frustration. Ymmv; this has worked for me for three years now; haven't missed a day of work from being sick since I started doing this.

- put Vicks Vaporub in hot water and inhale
- for severe coughs take Umckaloabo drops (recommended to me by my GP, they work wonders)
- drink lots and lots of tea with honey, alternatively hot milk with honey
- eat lots and lots of soup (chicken soup is best!)
- lie on the couch under a warm blanket and vegg out watching your favourite TV series on DVD
- did I mention chocolate yet?
