Lots of water, the most comfortable blanket on Earth and the most healthy things possible to eat and really the body does the rest. Just need to give it the encouragement

Usually I don't give a flying **** unless it's literally dropping me ded into the bed. Mind you, since I work with food I do call in sick for anything that is contagious (though tough luck actually getting free on short notice when we're already shorthanded for the nightshifts ... and I don't usually plan ahead on when to get sick, so there it goes). But as far as actually caring and working against sickness, I don't do it unless it's some really annoying stuff messing me up (like say a dry cough, try getting some sleep with that!).

As for homebrew methods against sickness (as that was undubitably the point of the thread):

Hydrate yourself. Lots of water. Teas can also work wonders against most everyday sickness symptoms.

Eat healthily. The body can't fight if you don't provide it with the energy to do it. Chicken soup is actually a scientifically proven meal that really does help (don't trust much into the canned stuff however, it has to be real chicken soup, not just flavoured).

Do not just drop into the bed and try to sleep it away. Do some workout, get sweaty. It helps the metabolism and the heat generated during some workout can work as an impromptu fever substitute. If you already got fever though, don't, for obvious reasons. Either way, stay warm.

Last but not least: fight it. Mental disposition does help. Psyching yourself up against the sickness may not help much in asense of physical reality, but it helps you be more physical, which in turn DOES help.

Nah, nothing much... I just a drink a Syrup for the cough and being careful not drinking cold drinks and such.... Sometimes Tea and I have a recipe for a Soup that belongs to my mother(It's a fine soup. I don't like it, but she puts pepper and stuffs there so the cold is gone fast)

She's really a wizard.

Real Sudafed is good for colds. In the US you have to ask the pharmacist and sign a form.

As for non-prescription, warm honey, lemon and whiskey (or rum) works a treat for sore throats.

Hot herbal tea is lovely for colds.

After the third day, I generally crave very hot wings. It's just nice to actually taste something at that point.

I've never heard of this... most of my sore throats were actually caused by shots of whiskey... :0

Anyway, the advice in this thread is pretty good, so I will simply add that it's wise to drink a lot of water to flush your system and stay hydrated.  Never underestimate the value of pure water to the body's welfare.

This is a bit nitpicking, but before anyone gets weird ideas about going on to distill or deionize his water, don't. Purified water lacks minerals that are crucial to a healthy diet and would have to be substituted by other means. The only reason to purify water is if you live in an area with an average water hardness of 5 mmol/L or higher. Recommended water hardness is 2-4 mmol/L.

I assumed people wouldn't drink water that smells like dead rat and feces, so I omitted that part. This thread is about working against sickness, not inducing it with eww'y imaginaries.

I'm better, but it's turned to laryngitis now. The nice thing about not being able to talk is that I'm getting all kinds of work done. Nobody will bother me.  :P

Question:

I haven't caught Flue-colds since October. But my brother who sleeps few meters far from me every night has gotten running nose and stuff. How can I possibly avoid getting sick?

I sold my soul to the devil. Now I get no flu or colds.

I fully expect him to betray me at some point. At that point I will cleave him in twain and then will arise to the title of King of the Underworld, beginning a holy war with heaven and it's angels while you petty mortals stand burning.

Do you know the common flu symptoms? Do you know how flu is different from a cold?

A cough and/or sore throat
A runny or stuffy nose
Headaches and/or body aches
Fatigue
vomiting and diarrhea

Drink Hot Liquids

Hot liquids relieve nasal congestion, prevent dehydration, and soothe the uncomfortably inflamed membranes that line your nose and throat. If you're so congested that you can't sleep at night.
