I shouldn't need to have a degree in programming to work a video game.

Oh, and I think that's what - 71 customers? Charming.

Just let the little into movie play after the ME's 'Press any key to continue' screen pops up. Simple as that seems! Three times I've gotten the game to play now with min, max, and mixxed setting all by letting the optional intro movie play. Though it does seem to make the cerberus logo on the main menu lag!
************************************************************************************
(Whatever going right to the menu does it seems to skipp a few steps or three needed to make the game run properly.)
I can suffer though the opening movie, but the game seems to be unplayable, still. The opening cenamatic plays fine as long as just the planet is in view. When Maranda pops up the video pauses ever few seconds, that I can live with. After that with everthing off in windowed mode Pressly and Joker's scene plays out smooth, but in full screen with everything maxxed there are no voices! It plays fine, and the sound works, but no voices.
Both times when Ashley and Shepard apear it's back to the the video pausing every few seconds. Makes the game bloody unplayable.
Home that helps, Bio-Ware, because that's proof whatever got "creatively coded" it's not hard-ware or drives, it's pretty much all your doing Bio-Ware. (sorry) I hope that helps, Bio-Ware because next time I post I'm posting with the help of the dictionary, and thesaurus! Rest asured, I will not be kind unless you have at the very least a suggested fix.

Holy Smoke I can confirm this indeed works.
I followed that step:
1. in the "Press Any Key to Continue" screen, I didnt click anything and waited for the optional intro movie to play. Once the intro movie finished, and the screen pops back to "Press Any Key to Continue" screen, now press any key and access the main screen.
Now you can choose new game and create new character or import your ME1 character. I imported my ME1 character and this time IT DIDNT STUCK AT THE LOADING SCREEN!!
I can now start to play the game!
Thanks for the great find!

SADLY, the in-game real time rendered cutscene is progessing at 5 seconds a frame now that I am able to get into the game. Out of one hole and straight into another, oh yeah.

Quad core!?
Just to be sure, your problem is a loading screen freeze when you try to make a character or load a new character and NOT some other freeze issue?

There was a Bioware post at the top of the last page. I believe there was also one very early in the thread. Give it more time.

Sure I'll give it a shot.
LuminousLupine managed to get his game working after a series of failures followed by restarts. Dunno what mojo went on but I'm willing to give it a shot myself.
1. He uninstalled Mass Effect 2. The "under an admin account" wasn't really necessary considering you can't make system wide changes without one.
2. He started the game and it crashed. He restarted his PC.
3. After the restart he installed the Downloadable Content he had access to.
4. Tried running the game again after the DLC installs. It still crashed so he restarted his PC again.
5. After the the restart he went into the Mass Effect 2 Configuration Utility(choose configure in the launcher) and turned all graphics settings to off.
6. He started Mass Effect 2, Alt-Tabbed, and started Firefox. He alt-tabbed back to ME2 to find that it had actually decided to play without crashing.
7. Somehow steps 1-6 beat the crashes, and allowed him to play the game.
I'm willing to give that a shot, PCs can be very finicky sometimes.
5. After the the restart he went into the Mass Effect 2 Configuration Utility(choose configure in the launcher) and turned all graphics settings to off.
Everyone should try this and see if it works.

Like I said earlier I am one of those with the laggy video issue, but I noticed something is that video start to run fine again in some situation and the lag mostly happen when there is an ambient colored light effect all over the screen. That one of the guerss I am ready to make after going through the whole intro and going through the tutorial area without any lag, then going back to laggy when when I get the next video which happen to have some ambient blue light effect, a bit like on the Normandy (except on Normandy is was orange light)
Off the play by putting down all shader effect that I can just to see how they play.
While I think about it the lag was mostly when hard drive was not in heavy fonction, and video were running fine when hard drive was searching something. Gonna test a bit with virtual memory just to see something also.
Ok checked different thing that could be turned off and don't seem related to them but there is one visual option that impossible to turn of "Numbers of cinematic light" which make me think my ambiant light guess could be right, the thing would be named "MaxCharacterCinematicLightingPasses" in the file if someone can find it and try to set it to 0 just to see if it correct trouble. Trying to find right now but no luck yet.

As for the "two" Bioware "responses" -
1) "Replicated Topic Closed/Sorry, didn't read the thread - not replicated - reopened."
2) "You are all playing on single core - you're SOL"
---
In other words - useless, arrogant techies.

Same problem here, wonder if you can download someones MASSEFFECT 2 save game and just load into the game? Just will have to wait for the patch to see the intro... Just a idea I dont have a save game of masseffect 2 so cant test it.
If you lag during first cinematic you will lag into further cinematic that happen to present same condition (the one just after tutorial area happen to be of those)

Makes me feel a little better that there are intel quad cores out there with similar problems.
Sent an email to EA about the game problems - will post their answer when I get it (supposedly within 24 hours...)

So to recap for people facing a similar issue:
1. get a fix that allows you to replace loading screens/movies with empty files (at your own risk, these are unofficial fixes and others on this forum have pointed the way). These will allow you to avoid the loading screen freeze issue.
2. Bear through the long intro movie that willl probably stutter like hell. Once gameplay starts, try to navigate your character through the ship despite the stutter. Watch some more movies probably with some stutter.
3. Congratulations, you have reached the character creation screen. From here on it should all go smoothly. You will get a green screen when skipping the load screen, but everything else (in-game cutscenes, gameplay, sound, etc.) should work well. At least it is for me right now. Just shot a bunch of security bots and all went well.
This game will be awesome. Hopefully everyone gets to enjoy it fully soon.
p.s.: I still expect an official fix by the developers to come out as soon as possible, but in the meantime, this is way better than watching a frozen load screen.
Good Luck.
Edit: spoke too soon. Just got to a conversation scene where the stutter is back... However, this whole experiment does confirm that my system can run the game perfectly well for extended periods of time. Nothing a good proper patch can't fix, it would seem
