Still freezing up on loading screen

Unfortunately I have the exact same problem everyone here seems to be plagued with. The game runs smoothly until I try to create a new character or import Shepard - then it halts at the loading screen and will not continue to load. CPU usage drops to 0% and I'm forced to control alt delete out of the game.
Alternately, if I load the game and watch the intro movie (after it tells you to press any key) the once-smooth menu screen lags like a **** but I can (eventually) import my she-Shepard. Yay! Except...now everything else runs just as badly as the menu screen and the game itself is unplayable. The in-game cutscenes are completely unwatchable; they'll play for about two seconds with another five seconds of nothingness in between, rinse, repeat. The cinematic with the Normandy ran beautifully - but without voices, I might add.
I'll also mention I had no problems running ME1 and DA:O on this machine - it's a little old, but it definitely meets all the minimum requirements.
Bioware...c'mon, seriously?

PS: If you want to get past the loading screen, some of you have and some haven't, you need to wait at the screen that tells you to press any key. wait for the movie to start and finish. After that you can go into the game but it lags and is unplayable.

You guys keep complaining about how Bioware has "dropped the ball," but the back of the package clearly states that the min. requirements include a dual core.
then please wxplain why it wont work on this rig(my rig), which blows away the specs for the recommended config.

If we didn't complain about our problems, then it would never get fixed....Im sorry but I have a dual core and its messing up too. So to me bioware did drop the ball.....

Your mileage may vary.
I was having the lock-up when trying to create a new Shepard or importing an old one.
There is a (long) thread about it on this page.
P4 3.6 GH
WinXP SP3
2 GB Ram
GeForce 7950GT Video card.
Just got done with the early combat scenes in the lab so I am apparently working.
1) Turned ON hyper-threading on my CPU. Its off by default - unknown how related to ME2 now working.
2) Ran AlacrityPC - a freeware program I use (for other games) that you can configure to shut down just about all of you background services and processes. I'm pretty ruthless and shut down all I can.
3) Start ME2 from the ME2.exe not the launcher per the AlacrityPC program.
4) Let the EA and Bioware splash screens run till you get to the "press any key" screen.
5) DON'T "press any key" - let the intro video run.
6) Once back to the "press any key screen" just press and play!
Again I had the lock-up on import and making new characters, and when I figured out a way past that (the "press any key" bug) I could import my saved Shepard but the video and game ran with such chop and stutters as to be unplayable.
Using the above steps everything (so far) is working great.

Reminds of 7th Guest - back in 92 a friend of mine with a good machine couldn't play it because it was made so poorly that it could only be played on the highest end at the time.
Now - dual core isn't "highest end" - but, guess what, you want good sales - you produce games like Blizzard does and make them so they can run.
---
And games like Left 4 Dead "Require" a Dual Core - and they run like a champ for me.
---
Last but not least - Dual Core and Quad Core people are having the same problem.
---
And really last - the last Bioware person to come in here admitted it isn't "Single Core" issues.
---
So - please be informed before trying to be a champion of temperance and common sense.
((And I can't even trade this POS in for the 360 version - and it baffles me why I even want to))

The actualy problem is that the game tells the lower - medium range cpus that it doesn't have enough to power the game, but they do. And the higher end cpus don't have a problem with it, nothing to do with single, dual, or quad. Just gonna have to wait for a patch.
Oh is that why it won't work with an i7@4.0ghz

Or is there anyone that has been monitoring this page that can say if their PC does support and have hyperthreading enabled but still freezing up on the loading screens?
If I wait for the intro movie to play, I can make it to the Lazarus project however just after you decide appearance/class, the game will freeze upon the subsequent loading screen.

I did three things at once ("press any key" fix / AlacityPC / and Hyperthreading) to get ME2 to work.
I will try it again with hyper-threading off and see if I can still play well.

I bought ME2 collector's edition - hard copy. Installed on my quad core Windows 7 x64 system | 8800 GT w/ latest drivers | and it crahses upon launching the game every time. I downloaded and tried the blank bik files - no dice. This is pathetic. We finally get a decent game the same day the 360 version is launched, and we still get dumped on. GG bioware
I've got a dual core amd processor running on vista and have a 8800 gts and am having the same problem where it crashes upon launching, doesn't even make it to any movies. I have tried reinstalling several times, still no dice.

On my system ME2 definitely likes Hyper-Threading.
Without it (just the "press any key" fix and AlacityPC) the game ran much better than before but still had chop and stutters in the video.
With hyper-threading on, plus the other two fixes, ME2 runs great for me.

This problem is real.
Please fix ASAP.

On the other hand, I'm still 20-ish hours away from finishing DoA, and I'm out of town this weekend. This would have normally upset me beyond the limits of my sanity (a $50 product HAS TO work out of the box), but my schedule has made it a little less upsetting.
... that still doesn't change the fact that this is unacceptable, especially coming from a company like BioWare (i.e. not an indie)<_<
