tried anything with every possible options.
AS Far as you can get is the real time intro cut scene.
My opinion is that the problem is CPU related (not the dual,single core problem).
Something is overloading the cpu and the GPU is waiting for the processed info from the cpu.
Something is making the cpu work more.. and this something is 5-6 seconds from the cut scene.
As soon as the close up ends from the burning planet(sun.. or whatever it is) ends the stuttering starts.
Maybe the physx engine is overloading the CPU because ATI doest support it. but as i saw in this thread Nvidia users are also experiencing this.

I have played with the GPU and the engine allot. so.. i am 99% certain that something(in that scene) is overloading the cpu

I can sometimes get to the task manager when it locks up, and it states that there's >5 CPU usage, so I don't think it's a CPU issue.

well i think its the cpu becouse the GPU is not heating at all.
When i play other games it goes up with 20 degrees
Now it stays the same.

And only the CPU temp goes up.

And i am not talking about the problem with the LOADING screen

i am talking about the stuttering after the loading screen.
Check it out your self ;)

Sounds like your issue is a bit different then. My issue isn't stuttering at all, it's purely loading hangups. The workaround where you let the intro video play through once then begin gets me through the first little bit, which works beautifully by the way, but then the next loading screen locks it.

So a stuttering issue could very well be a different problem than what idle_bg is talking about.

er, than what Soxboii is talking about. ****, now I'm confused as to who was complaining about what; regardless, hopefully the basic point got across.

just download the fix to replace your .bik files and you will never crash at loading again, only get unplayable stuttering at the cutscenes

i take that back.. its no Physx related.. the physx threads stays at 0 cpu.

all the cpu goes to
MassEffect2.exe!GImage::GImage+0x95948
not the PhysXCore.dll!NpCreatePhysicsSDK+0x223ae

BUT its 100000000% sure that its not based on the GPU!
All the time its stutters my GPU stays the same temperature. If the GPU is under stress it goes above 20-30 degrees.

Now it stays the same degrees like when using windows.

Only the CPU is stressed !!!

Hope this helps BIOWARE!

Look at the CPU optimization. this is cousing the problem. Its not he GPU AT ALL.

Just to add..  FOR the BIOWARE TECHS !
:wizard:
everything is fine while MassEffect2.exe!GImage::GImage+0x5509F0
and MassEffect2.exe!GImage::GetHSI+0x1026d8
share the same amounth of CPU time around 50% each.

But as soon as the camera ZOOMS off the burning planet(in the intro cut scene)(video preview: thanx to iniudan)
MassEffect2.exe!GImage::GImage+0x5509F0 goest to 100% and there is NO CPU left for the
MassEffect2.exe!GImage::GetHSI+0x1026d8

and every 3-5 second the poor MassEffect2.exe!GImage::GetHSI+0x1026d8 handle to squeeze 10-15% cpu and move the pictures with 1 frame.:whistle:

Hope this helps !!!!!!! :P

I'm patient, I'll wait for something official. I like the cutscenes, it's part of the game. I'm only replying in the thread because I'm at work for another 40 minutes and bored.

I look at Mass Effect like a movie. One of it's best aspects are the cutscenes. It's not like a normal game, like Batman: Arkham Asylum (Another game that game me lag issues but got it fixed) where I can just play the game and watch the cutscenes on youtube. Alot of mass effect and the decisions revolve around the cutscenes. I'm waiting for an official path too.

I would trade long elevators back instead of loading screens any day....

the fix only replaces your loading screens, doesn't do anything other than that, makes them a green square. You can still see tips and all in game movies and everything plot related. You miss anything but the rotating golden mass gate and a logo on entering the game. the plot cutscenes and prerendered scenes are fully intact but the in game engine cutscenes will be crazy slow. No more freezes.

id rather eat nails or gouge my own eye out than try to play though in game cutscenes that stutter so bad though and it seems to only be the random ones that do it as well

I WAS ABLE TO FIX ON MY RIG! NO UNOFFICIAL PATCHES, NO STUTTERING IN VIDEO SEQUENCES

The problem:
To recap: Like many, I had the screen freeze up on the initial load screen immediately after I selected Male/Female or Import. I could work around with the unofficial fix, but it caused obscenely low frame rates (1 frame/second) during very specific cinematic sequences.

What I did:
Fresh installation of a new OS. I went from Windows XP to Windows 7 using precisely the same hardware and only updating my drivers for Windows 7.

My (very tentative) theory:
Even if you have a multicore processor - Windows does not always see/use the other cores. Even if it recognizes as being a multicore under your system management tabs. You may need to install drivers prior to installing the operating system to utilize all cores.

This, I believe explains why people with multicore processors are having an issue that the devs postulated should be an issue with single cores.

This can be verified in Windows task manager: If you only have one CPU usage graph, it means you are only using one core. There should be multiple graphs: one for each core.

Windows 7 was able to immediately pick up that I had 2 cores, Windows XP did not.

Will be posting video of the stuttering that I recorded with FRAPS, to show more exactly what is the trouble to Bioware. Back with update on it in a few, with link to the tread that I will create for them, will help differentiate the loading lockup and the cutscene stuttering, that way will come to be easier to differenciate between the two.

you all need to set affinity to more than one core in the task manager or it will be slow and pause a lot. especially on amd machines.

Figured I might aswell post that I have the same problem, my pc more then meets the requirements Freezes on the first load screen which can be bypassed by waiting for the cutscene before the press any button part of the menu but that just gets me to the unbelievably choppy opening sequence.

Where did they let you do that?

I called Best Buy and they said I was not able to switch PC for 360.

I bought my copy at GameStop. I had called and the manager had picked up. I had told him about the situation that people were experiencing with the PC verion of ME2 and he said the same thing had happen to him. I asked him if I could just return the game and put my store credit to the 360 version and he said he didn't have a problem with that, so that's what I did. As good as ME2 looks, oh my 46" Samsung, it would of looked a lot cleaner on my PC.

Everyone, I'll chip in and add myself to the growing list:

I have exactly the same problem described, where the game freezes on the loading screen when trying to start a new game or import a ME1 character. I also have the same experience when waiting for the intro movie to play, which then causes horrendous lag/slowdown at the Cerberus network screen and so forth. A carbon copy to all the other descriptions.

I've just ordered a Quad Core system upgrade which I will install this weekend. Will it work? Should be interesting to see. My current system is:

Windows XP SP3
Athlon 64 3500+
2 gig ram
NVIDIA Geforce 9600 GT 512 meg
Soundblaster X-Fi XtremeGamer

The important thing to note is that I decided not to upgrade to Win 7. Yet. So I will be trying XP SP3 on a quad core system this weekend. That will be an Intel Core i5-750 on a P55 chip motherboard.

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE XP AND IT IS REPORTING ONLY ONE CORE and you have a multi-core system:

Read this Microsoft KB article, it may pertain to you: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936235

The hotfix described in that article may or may not affect how Mass Effect 2 utilizes the cores on your system, but it may well fix how XP (and possibly the ME configuration utility?) read the number of cores you have. Note that the hotfix is from Spring 2009, so it is not terribly old and does apply to SP3 (unlike older SP2-related multi-core issues).

Since this hotfix doesn't apply to my current rig, I can only throw this out there for others to play with.

I hope we all are enjoying Mass Effect 2 very soon!!!

(Edited to fix typo.)

Here is the link about cutscene stuttering topic I created to help differentiate the two issues and like I said earlier it include video example of the issue to help show what is actually happenning.

I was having this same problem earlier. I have a quadcore processor but was having some complications. I disabled 3 cores and fixed those problems(unrelated to ME2), but ME2 froze on the loading screan. I reenabled my other cores and it works fine now. This may help some of you.
