Still freezing up on loading screen

-Game freezes at load screens
-Game video stutters during cut-scenes and cinematics, (most notably the intro scene)
If using the "no-intro" fix, when the game begins stuttering during gameplay or a cut-scene, players can save their game and reload as a temporary fix.

1- Search for a game that also uses bink video (Like Mass Effect 1, Batman Arkham Asylum, etc...), in the same directory of the main executable of that game should be a file called "binkw32.dll".
2- Make a backup of the "binkw32.dll" file that should be in the same directory of MassEffect2.exe
3- Copy the "binkw32.dll" file of the other game (the file in point 1) to the directory of MassEffect2.exe. (Overwrite the file).
Start the game without the no-intro fix and see if it works.
If not you can delete the "binkw32.dll" file and restore the the one that comes with Mass Effect 2.
Hope that helps

Yeah i'm not changing my OS because of a bug, i'm sorry. Also, great job idle_bg, i'm sure this is gona help out alot.
In all likelyhood it isn't a bug.
You may not have to change your OS, but you may just need to reinstall your existing OS using the proper multicore drivers.
It seems like an inherent single core incompatibility - which the devs seemed to already know about. I would agree it is rather silly though, there isn't much in mass effect 2 that I can see that should absolutely REQUIRE you to run multiple cores.
But at the same time, I was going all this time thinking I had multiple cores and Windows wasn't even using them!

I was having this same problem earlier. I have a quadcore processor but was having some complications. I disabled 3 cores and fixed those problems(unrelated to ME2), but ME2 froze on the loading screan. I reenabled my other cores and it works fine now. This may help some of you.
Nawtyit, what Windows version are you running?
If you think it might be helpful to those who have multi-core systems but suffering from this problem, please consider describing what your complications with your cores were and how you fixed them! It might help, you never know.
Thanks.

I still don't have the game so maybe this won't help but people who have problems with prerendered scenes (they are done with bink video) could try this:

Thanks for the suggestion, Santiak16, but I just tried it with my Batman Arkham Asylum dll and unfortunately there is no change. The loading screen hanging issue is not resolved.
Note that the version of binkw32.dll that is included with Mass Effect 2 is version 1.9.5.0 (April 2009). The Batman AA version is 1.9.9.0 (June 2009), despite being an older release.

Are there? I'd love to hear what their specs are, then.
It's funny that I can play the even more demanding Batman Arkham Asylum, which uses the same game engine, really quite acceptably, but Mass Effect 2 goes to pieces. Utterly baffling.

You should find them hunting through the pages on this thread. I was able to play Batman flawlessly too and L4D2

This doesn't work, I get an error after pressing "Play" on the MasseffectLauncher that says a file cannot be read/found. Appreciate the help though, keep those ideas comin'.

E8500 @3.17GHz
8GB RAM
2 8800GTs in SLI
Bought the retail collectors edition from Best Buy. Took me a whole lot of hassling to get it to install, and now it just won't play. Very disappointing.

My specs:
Windows XP SP3
AMD Athlon X2 6400 (dual core 3.2 Ghz clock speed)
2 GB RAM
Nvidia GTX 260
SB X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Champion sound card
Clearly NOT a single core system. By the way, Dragon Age Origins runs like a champ on this rig (as did ME1, L4D 1 and L4D 2 etc., etc.).

just download the fix to replace your .bik files and you will never crash at loading again, only get unplayable stuttering at the cutsceneswvaughan1 wrote...
Sounds like your issue is a bit different then. My issue isn't stuttering at all, it's purely loading hangups. The workaround where you let the intro video play through once then begin gets me through the first little bit, which works beautifully by the way, but then the next loading screen locks it.
So a stuttering issue could very well be a different problem than what idle_bg is talking about.
Not so. I'm running a dual core system with Windows 7, 4GB of memory and still crashing at the second load screen (the Lazarus cutscene seems to be the main culprit). I can get through the first cutscene and minor gameplay flawlessly (the destruction of the Normandy), but after that it goes to a black screen, then Windows reports that ME2 has stopped working. It tries to check for a solution as to why the game crashes, but cannot identify a reason.
So it does indeed sound like we have two separate bugs we're dealing with here...<_< Replacing the .bik files doesn't do a damned thing about the crashes. In fact, I don't have a problem with the movies playing whatsoever...and the gameplay where you move Shepard to rescue Joker runs smooth as silk. Its when the game attempts to load the next part of the game that it craps out on me.
