We're still trying to find a common denominator between all of them.

Btw, good point. Pinning.

thanks michael gamble and do you happen to know if this is related to the stuttering of the game after prerendered cutscenes/.bik videos that you get with the workaround. I haven't seen anyone have this problem other than the people who had to use the replacement loading screens

I went into the game options and switched the game to run in a window and was able to get into the game (rather than locking up at the loading screen after choosing a new character).

I tried that as well and still ran into the lock up.

Thanks, Michael. What sort of information can we provide on this forum to help the engineers work out the fix?

Please tell us how we can help you guys find a common thread to get you going (no pun intended -- get it? Thread? Threading? Multi-threading? Ahem...) We urgently wish to help you and the BioWare team locate a solution.

The general consensus is that people with all manner of systems -- even those meeting or surpassing recommended specs -- are experiencing the game freeze during the loading screen after selecting to create a new male or female shepard, or import an ME1 character. I think in everyone's case a few frames of the golden mass effect relay animation stumble out before stopping altogether. I also think that in all cases music continues (it does in mine).

There is another problem with stuttering cutscenes OTHER than (or in addition to) the initial loading screen that are being mentioned in this thread, but these may be an unrelated issue. I hope people will separate that different issue into its own thread.

I wish someone had the time to collate together all the specs given thus far for people with this loading problem and see if there's a common element at work. So far, I can't find it.

raphaelt i also hope you are aware there is a total fix for the loading crash by replacing the .bik files for the loading screen but i understand <3 the loading screens so much to not do it. Sux but if you don't get stutter issue you only have to put up with 2 seconds of ugly green. every once in a while.

I had the same problem but it was my fire wall... The game randomly tries to connect to the internet and this was  making it freeze on my pc. I played game in windowed mode from configure on the load menu.
But if you can get to the extras menu turn off auto connect and that should do the trick

i have a similar freezing problem that posted on another post but am redirected to this post, so i will post it here.

My computer is freezing strangely when i started to play mass effect 2 (DVD version) this morning. I would be able to start the game, import my ME1 characters and finishing loading. I get to see the introduction scene until right after the normandy appears. The game would freeze then i restarted my computer and load the game again. I was able to get a min more content and freeze again. Do it again and i will be able to get further into the game before crashing. Sometimes the freeze will come with looping sound. Tried a few more times with similar results (I was finally able to get to creating character screen).

I had tried to update my drivers, Cleaning my driver.

Anyone have any idea what's going on?

System Spec:

Window XP sp3

Processor: AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6400+

Card: NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT

Audio driver: C-Media CM6501 Like Sound Device

4GB Ram

Direct x 9.0c

Athlon 3700+ OC at 2.9Ghz

2 Gigs

Geforce 9800 GT

I can play the game fine, until one of those CGI videos happen, it gets choppy again after that, even the video when you use a mass relay. It goes choppy, I save the game, close the game, reload and away it goes smooth again....

Odd

hey, just thought I'd clarify what's happening with me. I am getting BOTH the freezing loading screen, and the stuttering video. It depends on what I do to get into the game.

*If i skip the bioware logo screens and press any key when prompted to immediately, I can select to create a character and then the game freezes on the golden mass relay loading screen.

*if i do not press any key when prompted and allow the video with the clips from the blur trailer to play, then press any key once the screen comes back up, and then create a character, I can get past the loading screen but the video stutters to the point that I cannot bear to sit through it.

This is repeatable and happens on both my computer and my fiance's computer. I posted the specs in my last post.

Just hope being clearer helps, as it seems to me they are related issues.

Thanks all

Same as lime green, however I still froze up after completing the character apperance screen (the loading screen following that portion), just freezes/hangs there. As I said though I used the "waiting" method at the press any key logo screen (wait for the trailer to play) and so forth.

I'm going to post even though I'm not sure how helpful this info will be. I think most of you here are much more computer savy than me. I had the same problem, getting to the create new character/import ME1 character without problem. Then I would get to the loading screen and freeze, every time, no matter how long I left it. I updated my drivers, ran in windowed mode, etc, nothing worked. Then I started reading about the single core/dual core concerns and if xp recognized my dual core. Upon further review, I found that one of my cores was in fact disabled. (this little program confirmed it http://www.intel.com...b/cs-014921.htm ). I went into my BIOS, enabled the second core and the game is playing beautifully and without a hitch now.

Some of my specs:
Intel® Core™2 CPU          6700  @ 2.66GHz
Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 3
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS

Hope this helps someone!

I'm of the opion still it's a sync issue and or a mode switching issues, but that's just my 2 cents. Either way, is it possible it's (yet another) manufacturing or instillation defect?

Do you have check sums for the files? I can kick over to linux and give you some MD5 or SHA checksums on the Mass Effect directory if it will help. (Again, don't ask me if Windows can even be bothered to be that useful.)

Edit: Not all the difficult for me, and if it solves the problem, much much much less stress for me.  It's a simple one line command to recusively calclate the sums and pipe it to a text file or feed in a text file and compare the two. It may take a while for something like as massive as Mass Effect, but hey, if it solves this I'll do it with a smile!

I havent tried what Maevriel said yet but instead of Intel i went looking for AMD.
I had found this on there site.

AMD Dual-Core Optimizer Version 1.1.4

Description:
The
AMD Dual-Core Optimizer can help improve some PC gaming video
performance by compensating for those applications that bypass the
Windows API for timing by directly using the RDTSC (Read Time Stamp
Counter) instruction. Applications that rely on RDTSC do not benefit
from the logic in the operating system to properly account for the
affect of power management mechanisms on the rate at which a processor
core's Time Stamp Counter (TSC) is incremented. The AMD Dual-Core
Optimizer helps to correct the resulting video performance effects or
other incorrect timing effects that these applications may experience
on dual-core processor systems, by periodically adjusting the core
time-stamp-counters, so that they are synchronized.

Wow! Tried to log on again and, wouldn't you know it, it's telling me that the game hasn't been released in New York yet! It's still insisting, despite all available evidence, that it's actually the day before yesterday. Crazy.

So how about telling us what you're doing to fix it, Bioware? Tell us what the problem is? Tell us approximately when it'll be fixed? That would be swell, don't you think?

Earlier in this forum i saw someone who had fixed this problem by upgrading his OS to Windows 7 - an OS that supports multiple cores. Windows XP and sometimes even Vista were not designed for dual core operation. They came out with SP2 to fix this problem, but there are other steps that need to be taken in order for your OS to recognize multiple cores. If you open your task manager and your OS recognizes multiple cores there should be multiple graphs (one for each core) and you can set affinities for certain processes to a certain core.

if this is the case (which it is with my computer) then it actually is a single core issue. Your OS only recognizes the single core, and therefore doesnt allow the game to play based on the system requirements. I've been searching for the way to enable the cores for my XP prof but to no avail. Seems that the only fix is to upgrade to windows 7. I'd like some feedback on this and either prove, or disprove this!

help!

I WAS ABLE TO FIX ON MY RIG! NO UNOFFICIAL PATCHES, NO STUTTERING IN VIDEO SEQUENCES

The problem:
To recap: Like many, I had the screen freeze up on the initial load screen immediately after I selected Male/Female or Import. I could work around with the unofficial fix, but it caused obscenely low frame rates (1 frame/second) during very specific cinematic sequences.

What I did:
Fresh installation of a new OS. I went from Windows XP to Windows 7 using precisely the same hardware and only updating my drivers for Windows 7.

My (very tentative) theory:
Even if you have a multicore processor - Windows does not always see/use the other cores. Even if it recognizes as being a multicore under your system management tabs. You may need to install drivers prior to installing the operating system to utilize all cores.

This, I believe explains why people with multicore processors are having an issue that the devs postulated should be an issue with single cores.

This can be verified in Windows task manager: If you only have one CPU usage graph, it means you are only using one core. There should be multiple graphs: one for each core.

Windows 7 was able to immediately pick up that I had 2 cores, Windows XP did not.

this is the one i'm talking about

I managed to get mine to work. using the green screen .bik files. I have no stuttering whatsoever.
I have fairly low spec as far as i know
AMD 3200+ processor
2GB ram
nvidia 6800GS
windows 7 ultimate 64 bit

I did have some horrible framerate issues in ME1 and in DA:O, but I managed to fix those. It was daemon tools running in the background that was causing them for me. As soon as I killed DT I had playable framerate... might be same issue for some people for ME2 bad framerate

I'm completely with you on that, but there is a way to make windows recognize all of your cores. i just need to find it.
