I managed to get mine to work. using the green screen .bik files. I have no stuttering whatsoever.
I have fairly low spec as far as i know
AMD 3200+ processor
2GB ram
nvidia 6800GS
windows 7 ultimate 64 bit

I did have some horrible framerate issues in ME1 and in DA:O, but I managed to fix those. It was daemon tools running in the background that was causing them for me. As soon as I killed DT I had playable framerate... might be same issue for some people for ME2 bad framerate

Similar rig to mine, but I'm running vista.  How are the cut scene videos?  Fully intact and no problems?

works like a charm, no stuttering, no cutting off sound, no static. The only thing is lip sync is a bit off in a couple places but that's probably how the vid is.

now the question is do I play this one with a new character or replay through ME1 so I can import. (lost my save file in a system reformat)

There's the "repository of Mass Effect saves."

What did you use to replace the files?  Checked back and think it might be this one: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=1KHDBLIL ...

Or another?  This wasn't bothering me at work, but at home, bored and drinking and ...

It is not just a single core problem

It's not ppl with dual cores can't run this game right now because of the bug. Theres also been singe cores running the game. I can run combat and interactive chats in ME2 fine, but the beggining scene and load screens screw are messed up.

I solved the problem in this thread for my computer.

Like everyone else I could not progress past the orange loading screen, also I could play the opening movie if I didn't click start.  The movie played flawlessly , the destruction of the Normandy did not stutter and I could build a profile, but the next loading screen would lock the game up.

My system is:

Intel e6600 core 2 duo @ 2.4 Ghz (OC'd to 3.00 Ghz) on a MSI NEO2 mobo

Windows Vista 32 bit

2 Gigs ram

Nvidia 8800 GTX

Direct x 10

I have played Mass Effect 1 and Dragon Age origins with no problems at all.

What came to mind as I read through this forum was that  I noticed  my system only seemed to recognize 1 of the 2 processors on my core 2 duo chip.  I entered msconfig , went to boot , advanced options and checked the box for Detect HAL. Rebooted my system and found that the 2nd processor was then recognized ( I guess it wasn't seeing the correct drivers).  I was then able to play Mass Effect2 without any problems.

I did nothing else ( except for wracking my brain for the last 18 hours). I attempted no reinstallation of the game nor any workaround that has been presented here in this thread.  I appreciate that this solution won't be of use to everyone( if anyone), but perhaps it might point the Devs or anybody else in a useful direction.

Hope this helps.

@wvaughan1 : yes it was the one from mega upload. I backed up my movie folder before overwriting the files so that I can get the load screens back once the real patch is out, but I can at least play now

Tried this, but i dont have a box that says Detect HAL. This could be due to the fact that i am running a quad core processor, on a 32 bit XP proffessional OS. can anyone confirm this would be a problem?

Hmmm, with xp I believe you go in through device manager , click on computer and see if it comes up as uniprocessor or multiprocessor in the ACPI

Keep getting the freeze at upload character loading screen.  All audio/video/MOBO drivers are up to date.  Defragmented HD, used clean up utility, defragmented local game cache, reinstalled steam/ME2, tried in safe mode, tried with minimum settings, still freezing every time the same exact way.  Game is through steam.  Fix this, NOW!

when you do the task manager does it show one or two graphs for your performance on you CPU?

One graph. System specs show core duo. Never had a problem with any other game from disk or steam.

I've been reading some other forums and they say that if your OS recognizes 2 cores then there would be a graph for each core. click view and make sure that One graph per CPU is on just to double check

The option is checked and grayed out. Is my system not utilizing both cores? It freakin' better be!

I thought mine was too. I've contacted intel support about this and from all the sources i've contacted it seems that my quad core processor isn't being utilized because i'm running Windows XP prof 32 bit. Bioware originally thought this was a single core problem, but people with dual and quad cores still had the problem. what i'm seeing is that everyone of us that has this problem doesnt have their cores utilized by their OS. so the game sees only one core, which it wasnt designed for.

only solution (if this is true) is to either make your OS recognize the multiple cores, or if your OS doesnt support quad core (Which i think is my case) then upgrade to one that does. a 64 bit system.

I WAS ABLE TO FIX ON MY RIG! NO UNOFFICIAL PATCHES, NO STUTTERING IN VIDEO SEQUENCES

The problem:
To recap: Like many, I had the screen freeze up on the initial load screen immediately after I selected Male/Female or Import. I could work around with the unofficial fix, but it caused obscenely low frame rates (1 frame/second) during very specific cinematic sequences.

What I did:
Fresh installation of a new OS. I went from Windows XP to Windows 7 using precisely the same hardware and only updating my drivers for Windows 7.

My (very tentative) theory:
Even if you have a multicore processor - Windows does not always see/use the other cores. Even if it recognizes as being a multicore under your system management tabs. You may need to install drivers prior to installing the operating system to utilize all cores.

This, I believe explains why people with multicore processors are having an issue that the devs postulated should be an issue with single cores.

This can be verified in Windows task manager: If you only have one CPU usage graph, it means you are only using one core. There should be multiple graphs: one for each core.

Windows 7 was able to immediately pick up that I had 2 cores, Windows XP did not.

this is the one i'm talking about

I understand what you are saying here, really I do.....the bad news is they said windows xp is a supported OS for this game, and that being the case, we(I) should be able to use my PC as is.  Am I being stubborn?  Probably, but it IS part of their system requirements.  I am currently trying to figure out now, how to get my XP SP# pro to recocnize my quad core, but I installed a program that detects them and it does, so I'm just a little confuzled at the momment.  I haven't given up yet.  I still have 6 hrs to investigate.
