So is there a fix now for single cores? Cause I've been checkin in and out for the past 2 days...

Win XP Prof
AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3200+
2.01 GHz, 1.50 GB RAM
Sapphire Radeon HD 4850 1GB

I can play Dragon Age smoothly, and with ME1 I get some stuttering every so often, but still playable...

Not really a fix, i just have a theory that fits. if i'm right, single cores wont be able to run this period. dual and quads can but they either have to modify their OS or upgrade.

I have the exact same processor as you and the only part that screwed me over was the opening scene and the loading screens. Wait for Bioware to release something to be angry lol. There is hope... maybe

Check your task manager and see if theres 4 graphs. what bit XP are you using?

I only have 1 bar on my graph, and I realize that XP SP3 PRO isn't looking at my duo quad like is is 4 cores, but i have several confirmations that it is, it is just that this game is not recocnizing it in their configuration tool.

Unfortunately it says right on the box that it requires a dual core to work. looking at it right now. but where it doesnt work even for dual cores, i dont know how they are going to handle it, whether its their fault or ours....

I pre-ordered Mass Effect 2 from amazon and got it yesterday, installed it and ran into the same problem ya'll are having. My game freezes at the loading screen and if I bypass it with the unofficial patch or wait through the trailer, I get to the opening cut-scene which is extremely choppy. My machine is plenty powerful enough to play this game. In fact, there isn't a game on the market (that I know of) that won't run on my machine. I can play Dragon Age, ME1, Fallout 3, CoD: MW2, Crysis- you name it. There's no reason it shouldn't be able to handle ME2, single core or not.

Machine name: BUBBLES
Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2
System Manufacturer: TYAN Computer Corp
System Model: S2866
BIOS: )Phoenix - Award WorkstationBIOS v6.00PG
Processor: AMD Athlon™ 64 FX-57 Processor,  MMX,  3DNow, ~2.8GHz
Memory: 3070MB RAM
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 Ultra

Considering that a large part of the appeal of this game is the cinematic aspect, this glitch makes the game unplayable. I can't say I'm not pi**ed off about this, but I'm withholding judgment on BioWare until we know for certain what causes this to happen. Still, it's hard to imagine how they didn't catch this in the testing phase.

I have however been able to successfully play on my dad's workstation:

Machine name: JOHN
Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2
System Manufacturer: Supermicro
System Model: X7DA8
BIOS: Ver 1.00PARTTBL
Processor: Intel® Xeon® CPU           E5345  @ 2.33GHz (8 CPUs)
Memory: 3070MB RAM
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 Ultra

This machine has two quad-core CPUs which, interestingly, show up on dxdiag as 8 CPUs and on the ME Configuration tool as 2 CPUs and 2 Cores. I can post/email the full dxdiag for both machines if that will help.

I might just have to get online with Intel or microsoft to get this figured out. So they can tell me what I have to do to get their configuration untility to recognize it. Matbe put up some sort of Well lit vegas style bilboard on my other three cores(humor much needed right now).

hey, just thought I'd clarify what's happening with me. I am getting BOTH the freezing loading screen, and the stuttering video. It depends on what I do to get into the game.

*If i skip the bioware logo screens and press any key when prompted to immediately, I can select to create a character and then the game freezes on the golden mass relay loading screen.

*if i do not press any key when prompted and allow the video with the clips from the blur trailer to play, then press any key once the screen comes back up, and then create a character, I can get past the loading screen but the video stutters to the point that I cannot bear to sit through it.

This is repeatable and happens on both my computer and my fiance's computer. I posted the specs in my last post.

Just hope being clearer helps, as it seems to me they are related issues.

Thanks all

Well, I have basically identical results. A bit more specificity though: When you DON'T wait, simply skip immediately, the menu goes regular speed and such, then it freezes. When you wait, everything, including the menu, that's produced by the game's engine rather than being CGI/FMV/what-have-you stutters severely. Also, the first time I used the wait method, the video where the ship was blasted, there wasn't any voice. There were regular noises like music and the weapon firing, but no voice. I found out when I was looking to post here the first time that my computer was XP SP2 at the time, after installing SP3 it had voice, don't know if those are related.

Specs:
Windows XP 32 bit SP3
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 2.01 GHz
GeForce 7600
1.5 GB RAM

Standard settings and extremely low settings get same results. And I must ask: HOW did this get past testing?

I've talked to Intel and they said to talk to Microsoft that its their problem and you cant talk to microsoft unless you pay 50 bucks for it. so good luck, and if you make any progress into this let us all know!

I think what is going to happen here is when the patch this little issue is that in the end they will allow all single core users to also use this game, it make little sense as to why they should not be allowed especially if they meet ghz requirements. I quess i shouldn't speek to that tho because i've got Intel core 2 duo quad so.......

Lies! Lies I tell you! ;)

:)

Depending on how many threads the game was programmed with, it can make good uses of up to that many cores, but it's all lies that it requires more then one proccessing core. The hardware will just load balance additional threads on one of it's cores, in the case of a single core, it's all just balanced on the one core. How exactly that is implmented, you'd have to consult the various drivers and manufacutres, but to say more then one is required is ignorant.
