Hey guys, I was having both the stuttering video and stuck loading screen issues, however fooling around in MSCONFIG, I was able to fix it.

AMD Athlon Phenom II 9550
4 gigs DDR3 RAM
Asus ATI Radeon 5770
Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

Punched into MSCONFIG (typed 'msconfig' into the text box on the start menu), went into boot, then advanced options. Checked the Number of Processors box and told it I had 4. After a reboot, the game runs like butter; all settings turned on and at 1680x1050. About 20 minutes in, but quit out to inform those of you having trouble. It might be worth a shot. All I can say otherwise is that this game is freakin' amazing so far.

I don't know if it would help you single core guys out, but it might be worth forcing it to think you only have a single processor? (Telling it you just have one core?) Not sure how that works.

EDIT: clarified a few things

Unfortunately it says right on the box that it requires a dual core to work. looking at it right now. but where it doesnt work even for dual cores, i dont know how they are going to handle it, whether its their fault or ours....

Lies! Lies I tell you! ;)

:)

Depending on how many threads the game was programmed with, it can make good uses of up to that many cores, but it's all lies that it requires one. The hardware will just load balance additional threads on one of it's cores, in the case of a single core, it's all just balanced on the one core. How exactly that is implmented, you'd have to consult the various drivers and manufacutres, but to say more then one is required is ignorant.

Hey, i dont know much about programming but from the sounds of it and posts from Dev's the game was programmed to use two cores. if it doesnt have that then it doesnt work right. but hey i'd love to be proven wrong! please please prove me wrong! i'm not spending more money to fix this.

Right now you support my theory as well. I did the same thing you did, (i have a quad) and under the numproc box it only had 1. but i have XP prof 32 and you have Windows 7 ultimate. 7 was designed for multiple cores.

..yeaaaah, im going to rage if when this is all over single cores still can't run the game, especially when there are more CPU intensive ones around that I can run without much issue =/

People, I think there's a lot of misinformation flying around here aboutt Win XP and multi-core processors.

Windows XP can natively use multi-threading, and support multi-core CPUs. This applies to BOTH 32-bit and 64-bit versions. Otherwise Mass Effect 2 would not require a multi-core processor but officially support Windows XP on the box specs.

Read this thread for verification and more info about XP and multi-cores: http://www.tomshardw...core-processors

Vista also natively supports multi-core processors. If you are running one of these systems with a multi-core processor and it's not recognizing it, then you should seek the optimizers or utilities that others posters have mentioned on this thread! They are all describing how forcing Windows to recognize the other cores is solving these issues.

Also, I posted it many pages ago but I'll post it again: If you are running Win XP with a multi-core processor and Win XP is only recognizing one core, I urge you to try this hotfix from Microsoft's site:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936235

I am running a single core AMD Athlon 64 right now, and I have this problem so I cannot verify if this hotfix will help with ME2, but it should help your OS to recognize your other cores. However, I've ordered a quad core Intel and it's on its way, but I'm not upgrading from my current Win XP 32-bit, which should fully support multi-threading and Mass Effect 2. Since I'm on a single core right now, I'm sort of resigned to the fact that this issue won't go away for me (although some people are claiming that they're running the game without trouble on a single core -- go figure).

Please, anyone with Win XP and a multi-core processor that isn't properly recognized by Win XP, try the hotfix I linked you to and please let us know!

in the minimal systemrequirement it says u need a processor with 1,8 ghz

so it should work with a single core.

btw i cannot play^^

I'm probably being stubborn and in denial but i refuse to believe the problem lies in the single core. I was able to max out the settings on Crysis, GTA 4, and L4D2, but i can't play ME2 on low settings?

I've read your post before and tried that very hotfix. it doesnt work. My theory is that yes indeed they have fixed XP to utilize mulicore processors, but only 64 bit can use quads. 32 can use duals but not quads. Vista can use them but many a time they are not set up to use them and you have to go in and do that manually, like some people have.

just to give a little info in my issues:

I have two machines: A Toshiba Qosmio dual core 64 running Vista with 4 meg ram! Mass Effect 2 installed fine and runs perfect with no issues at all!

I also have a destop machine A8N-SLI Deluxe AMD running windows 7, 3 meg ram, 512 Nvidia Graphics card with the new installed drivers, yet after the install the game will lock if I hit any key before the into screens, if I wait then it gets to the skeleton and then locks! I am so pissed because I would rather play this game on my desktop!

Yes, I know I can still play it and I'm sorry for all you guys and gals who can't! believe me I am truly sorry!

I just don't get it... is it a windows 7 issue? is it a core issue? is it a hardware issue? I can't understand why Bioware doesn't have any new info regarding this crash and what are they doing about it!

Crap this is frustrating!

Yo Joe! :)

i know it seems like i'm just ranting and raving about my "Theory" here but its by far the most valid one i see out there. make sure that your task manager shows multiple cores on your performance charts. lemme know what thats like. please prove me wrong!

When I finally got ahold of the chap support, all I got was some links to clean temp files and get drivers but thats it! They wouldn't answer any questions, they wouldn't talk to me, they didn't want to talk about my issues! Crapy tech support if you ask me! This was after I waited 45 mins to get ahold of someone!

Not good!

Well you can add me to that long list of users with the same load screen problem. This sucks, I can't believe they would release a game that was OBVIOUSLY not ready to leave beta. On top of that I cant believe i paid $60 for it.... Upper Management; Great Job. Way to drop the ball guys. Rushing a product along to meet a deadline and cutting corners leads to a half ass reputation, one which we will not soon forget. Now that this has happened, every time a game is being released that includes the name Bioware, We are all going to remember this epic failure.

If you are only running a single core processor (like me), then when you go to this setting there is nothing you can change. You have the choice of running 1 processor core because 1 is all you have.

Seriously, i just wish someone from support would take a look at this forum, do some investigating and say "Genesis, you're wrong. STFU and stop bothering people on the forums." all we have gotten from a Dev is that they know we have a problem and its not high on their list of things to do.

go to page 4 or 5 of this forum. Look for a file that you can download to fix the freeze. I did and it works. you will have lag in the first cinematics but when you get to the character screen you will be able to play game as normal.

I have been following this thread since yesterday, and have the same freezing problem as everyone else. Someone said try letting the movie play when the "Click or press any key"" intro screen comes up. After the movie plays when the "Click or press any key" screen comes up again, then click or press a key and start a new game. This worked for me and was about to play the game up through 2 sequences and through the character creation. It now crashes at the second loading screen.  That being said the gameplay was rough at best, but at least a teaser to see what we are missing.

For those that think single core cannot run this game. I did the load screen fix and the game runs smooth as glass. I played for many many many ( 20 about ) hours no problems at all. I and a couple of others have gotten to the scene where you have to take the shuttle and we get black screens that have sound, but the screen freezes there... Hoping that the fix for the load screen will work. I cannot afford a 500.00 upgrade at this time.

A shame that hotfix didn't work. Sorry. However, did you read the Tom's Hardware link I included? I urge you to go to it again, because they state quite explicitly that Windows XP 32-bit and 64-bit BOTH fully support quad core processors (using SP3):

http://www.tomshardw...core-processors

You'll need to read some of the replies further down on that page.

However, it's quite obvious that Vista and especially 7 are tweaked to exploit them better, but only in the future. Read this article:

http://www.infoworld...re-273?page=0,0

Guys, it's not the operating system that's the problem here, but it may be that your OS is failing to recognize your cores. More and more people are reporting in about that.

By the way, XP has the boot.ini flag to specify number of cores at startup, just as mentioned by the poster above for Vista.

I'm not willing to use some unofficial fix to this problem. who knows where that "Fix" has been and what kind of STD's it has. i know theres many others that feel the same way as i do.
