Bioware has responded. They said if there is a fix for it, it will be in the form of SECOND patch to be released after the first patch they are currently working on I believe. It is somewhere in this topic amongst the 31 pages, I didn't feel like looking for it. It's somewhere in pages 2-15 or something.

that is cool that they would not support it, but i was asking the community here how to open it, aslo i haven't seen any bioware officials telling anybody NOT to use it, as i have with some other "fixes"

I used the link off gamecopyworld and if it's the same file as the megaupload one, then you will need to extract those files with a program called WinRAR.  It's easy to find on google and you can d/l the trial which pretty much lasts forever.

Also, I was commenting on genesis who said he would like a Bioware dev to come in and give the go ahead, which I doubt will happen.  I don't think a developer would openly support modifying their game files.  Now, like you said, the fact that they haven't said DON'T DO IT, could speak volumes :)

At this point i think its me just being absolutely stubborn. i'm one of those people who doesnt want to miss ANY of the game, and theres the potential for it to take out content, to me, that makes the game what it is. I know i'm being stupid about it.

I guess I'll be fine waiting till the weekend to play, but if it isn't till the first, then I might as well have waited till it was 2 months old.. I was really looking forward to shooting robots in the head before my vacation.

Man this whole not supporting single core thing is bogus.  I guess I should accept some blame for not checking the requirements but since I managed just fine with DAO, Batman and MW2 I figured this should be no problem.  Atleast they could have put a giant disclaimer on the box or something considering a ton of people still use single core processors.  I guess we PC gamers really are second class citizens compred to them console folk.  So then unless Bioware throws us a bone we're stuck with a $50 coaster, or worse nothing if it's the digital version?

Ok heres the deal, I have a single core, AMD turion mobile 64, I got the loading freeze bug and fixed it with the green square loading screen. Game runs extremely choppy for me after a prerendered cutscene but when I can save/reload the game runs flawlessly until the next prerendered scene and I have to save reload.

The game works perfectly fine on single cores, not even using 100% of my processor when im playing EXCEPT after a .bik movie plays (replacing them with green screen doesn't work like the loading screen fix) and I have to reload to fix choppy

I totally agree, I wanted to play too but what can you do? Not our fault bioware fails, they don't do it much when it they do its epic. KORTOR II had tons of bugs....and so did ME1. If they are going to release the patch they have schedule (not a patch to fix our problem) then they are not very bright. I was going to get SWTOR when it came out but now idk......I hope it don't though.
I need you obi-wan kanobi, youre our only hope.:D

Edit, yes I just noticed that mass effect 2 config is only detecting 1 core on my system, despite it having two (Intel® Core™2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00GHz). I am extremely confused, The Intel Processor identification utility says I have 2 cores, yet the ME2 config says I only have one. Is there a way to get the config tool to recognize the second core?

Same problem, locks on first load screen after clicking New Character, Male.

AMD 64 3000+ 1.808 CPU
2GB DDR PC3200 dual channel RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT 512 MB VIDEO CARD (newest driver)
Realtek AC97 Audio
DirectX 9.0c (Mar2009) or later (Mar2008 comes with, didn't work either)

Guess I'll play the first one until a patch comes out

Let me remind you all that the issue is not with single cores, and neither with the game locking at the first loading screen. We already solved that... The game starts freezing after small cinematics if there is no load between them. I repeat its not a sigle core issue..

Still lolman, it should be noted that the config utility isn't making note of a machines real physical status, and as such, which may lead to other complications.

I have gone traitor on all of you, I just could not wait any longer. I tried the "unoficial hotfix". It kinda works. It does indeed turn the loading screens to a green square in the middle of the screen, and the tips still show up. Gameplay is awesome. Movies are not so great, especially the ones that have the interactive chat circle in them. (I'm trying not to spoil) If you try the fix you will have to save after every movie scene(not every but most) then exit and reload your game, or the gameplay will be very choppy like the movie was. So if you decide to use the unoficial "fix"(which it really dosen't fix anything so it's more like a workaround really) you still have problems just not a freeze error. I can't wait till they actually get around to oficially fixing this because I will start all over and enjoy it the way it was meant to be enjoyed. Sorry I went turncoat on you guys, I've been with you all from the start. I wouldn't blame not a single one of you if you still chose not to use this route. I will still be popping in and out, continuing to pull for all of you, and monitoring the situation, becasue I still DO want to enjoy this game in all it's apparent splendor when it is fully functional. Thanks for all the support you all have been able to give in the mean time.

By the way the unofficial fix link can be found on this thread and you will need to get another program to open it, it is called "winrar"(just get the one that applies to your system), and please be sure to backup(copy&paste from control panel> "folders" tab> local disk> programfiles> masseffect2> bioware> movies, to any file folder you chose or create for it) your movies file before you apply this unoficial fix, so that you can return the game back to it's original state before you apply the official patch/hotfix.

-blushing- I took the risk of uploading this file, it is clean, I even scanned it before I used it.

The problem may still be with single cores, we wont know until they patch/hotfix the game. The patch/hotfix may fix the cofigurator(new word?) and if so then it would allow me(with an intel core 2 duo quad to play it right), but may still block those with a true single core processor. They dropped the ball big, I would be prepared for the worst here guys/gals. Honestly though I think there are more problems that they aren't letting on about. I noticed while I was playing, the actual movies themselves aren't using all of the sound channels, and I do have the same problem as everyone else here I just used the unoficial workaround. It dosen't alter the movies, just deletes all of the load files, and leaves all the movies intact, so the gameplay is good but the movies with chat circle are still VERY choppy. I believe this is because the conigurator(I love saying it like that now)is not recognizing my multiple cores so it thinks i'm still only using one so when it plays a movie AND it requires interaction, it can't multi thread because it thinks I only have a single core processor. I am not saying it is over we can still hope.

good job metacalf. everyone already tried the hotfix... Im half way through the game, but I still want an official patch so I can play the second playthrough without problems.

ps: USE the god damn edit button, and stop spaming.

ps2: it could be great if everyone would stop talking about themselves as in ( "oh I tried but didnt work", "hello I tried the fix but doesnt work fully" etc.) - . its hard for the devs to track the forum ( if they actually are ). Instead, talk about possible fixes.

Ps3: and yet could've edited again before my post, but no you spamed again with a new post and you're calling me a troll? lol next time I'll just report you.

Actually lolmanftw, one of them was a more indepth and informative way of desribing the unoficial workaround for those like myself, who don't understand computers the way some more adept users do, and the second post, was a reply to YOU, on the post you put up while I was typing the first one not an edit, they just happened to come really close to each other.  I promise you don't want to see spam from me, troll.  I was trying to help.

I'm going to bed now.........

That's the exact same problem i'm having iwth my intel. Is there any way to fix this?

would be funny if bioware releases a patch with static jpegs substituting the animated loading sequences. That would be like, same as the unofficial fix for the loading problem. XD

forget it, Bioware wont just released some half-finished patch that give us a green screen instead of the usual loading screen. when an official patch will be available, it will fix thing so they can ALL WORK PROPERLY AS THEY SHOULD HAVE IN THE FIRST PLACE...

... and that is, no matter how much time its gonna take...

Brutal. I was looking forward to playing ME2, but I can't due to this very problem - crashing on loading screens. I purchased the Collectors' Edition, too. Guess I have to wait 18 months til I can upgrade my PC.

Such is life.

ohh well now i know what the problem is!

1. IF you are Dual core user and you are experiencing the problem!
This is becaouse you system(win) does not recognize that you are with 2 or more cores.
SO look out a way to make your win see that its a multicore CPU ! (look around hardware guide sites)

2). If you are a single core user.
Well you are screwed! :) like me :)
There WONT be any fix because the game itself is running two(main) threads that require CPU
GImage::GetHSI + !GImage::GImage
so no fix for this yet. And i think BIOWARE wont release either.
THey said that the game min req is DUAL CORE :(

so here you go.
this is the sad situation.
sad.. sad day indeed

90% of users that have this problem have single core, and many 2 core users have stated that their config file says they have only 1 core.
