Typically can't get past the first loading screen. If I wait for the opening cinematic I can get all the way to character creation and then it freezes up. As far as how it runs during the destruction of the Normandy, I have most settings on high and it is very smooth.

My system:

Intel® Core™2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00GHz

Family 6, Model 23, Stepping 6

#CPU's: 1 #Cores: 1 Clock Speed: 3075 MHz

I am also using an ATI Radeon 4870 with the latest catalyst drivers.

Seems to be a number of people in this thread using ati and experiencing this same problem. As well as a number of people with multiple cores and only one being recognized.

No matter how many times I rescan my system in the config utility it still thinks there is only one core.

Another note, I am using the Digital Deluxe Edition from Steam.

Hi folks.

I have one QA and one Engineer looking at this forum right now and trying to find commonality between all of the posts.

Many of you have been helpful so far in providing useful information. To continue this, let's keep the conversation to..
1. What the issue you are seeing is, and where.
2. Your hardware specs (as reported by the configuration utility)
3. Your *actual* hardware specs (if there is any difference between what you see in the config util and what you have reported in your BIOS).

This forum is officially to deal with the problem of load screen freezes and crashes (most *likely* related to single core). Any other random crash reporting will just dirty the thread and slow down the solution process.

Now heres my disclaimer: Our min specs are listed as dual core for a reason, and based on this, we were able to architect it slightly differently. It doesn't matter that your game worked well w/ Batman (just because we both use Unreal) - ME2 is an entirely different game. We are looking at it, and we are hearing you loud and clear. We may find a solution, we may find a workaround, but we also may have no recourse.

We will keep you updated!

So from what we can gather Michael, and from what you have said, the single core is a definite issue. For those of us using multiple core systems and the ME2config only recognizing one core, seems to definitely be a problem or at least causing some of the mischief. One idea relating too the multi core users is the idea that "Is their systems actually not using both of their cores and as such, ME2 is unable to recognize the cores, or is me2 not recognizing multiples cores by its self (config bug maybe?)?

Also, I wonder if this problem is OS dependant.

Other theories may help this problem.

1. Loading screen is common problem, but avoidable. True problem is glitching after playing any prerendered cinametic. (0.5 fps most) have quick save and quick load. Ah end mission do not work also. Just Black screen.

3. Actual spec Athlon 3000+ GeForce 9600, 2GB ram Win XP. But really single core is not a problem due the game runs smoothly, and its playable.. until cinematic.

Does it matter that my machine worked well with "Left 4 Dead 2" - just because it also said it "Required" a Dual Core?

And - because of some copywrite thing - I can't exchange it for an XBOX 360 version at Best Buy.

Anyway - I've posted my specs twice. They haven't changed. I'm packing up my Mass Effect 2 and moving on - and I won't be wasting my money in the future.

Thanks for the reply.

The issue i (and im sure most others) find is: Upon selecting "new game > male/female/import" the subsequent loading screen freezes/crashes almost straight away. Also having personally used this "fix" to bypass the loading screen the game is extremely laggy (stutters) maybe this is somehow related?

AMD Athlon™ 64 Processor 4000+ (Family 15, Model 95, Stepping 3) 1 core

4gb Ram

NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GSO 512

Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3

The same hardware readout from the config utility as BIOS

Thanks in advance for taking the time to look into it.

Made this account for bioware just to thank you Michael for re-assuring us.

I myself am running an old Single Core,AMD Sempron paired up with an ATi 3650 on XP and the game runs flawlessly, well, except the loading screen freezes.

I can get the loading screen to work by waiting for the first intro movie to appear and play(plays flawlessly)but then it stutters.

So at the moment I'm using the -nomoviestartup to the ME2 shortcut and it works without issues, you've guys surely made an awesome game.

Looking forward for a patch/fix/workaround.

Qwinn - you said you're running single core, and you ran the "fix", and now you're working flawlessly? I've used that "fix" and I've had no such luck.

I'm working flawlessly *except* after certain cinematics play. (I haven't taken a mass effect gate yet, I'm doing everything in the starting system first). So far, in this starting system, there haven't been too many cinematics that do it. It's only happened a handful of times. But when I do get one of them, then I get the stuttering and freezing until I can reach a point where I can save, then a save and reload always fixes it.

One thing is certain: the stuttering/freezing only happens right after certain cinematics play. The load screens obviously fall into that category, but there's some other ones as well. I remember, for instance, that taking the shuttle off the starting area, in a cutscene conversation with Miranda and Jacob where you get grilled on your memories, that one was doing the freezing. That cinematic with the shuttle leaving the starting station is clearly another culprit. Also, the brief conversation with Joker after you first meet him stuttered as well.

Note that it's not just gameplay that will stutter, other cinematics can as well. Once a certain type of cinematic plays, *everything* will freeze and stutter until you save and reload.

Michael, I appreciate your efforts, and really hope you can solve it. Please remember that some of us pre-ordered the game *before* the system specs were published, so we had no way to know this would be an issue.

My issue is with game not loading after I click on the play option on the menu. nothing happens as if i didn't even click on the game to start. The menu closes and I keep staring at the background I am in admin mode also.

Processor: Inter Core i7 920 2.67GHz

Memory: 6.00 GB

System: Windows 7 64-bit

G.card: ATI 4800

Sound card: Creative Audigy 2 ZS pro

It seems that many people with Win 7 64 bit have similar problem, either like mine or having a black screen in the same place and then crashing the game. We are not able to get into the game for some reason, that is where our problem starts.

Is the defaultengine file one of those that can be modified (to bring down the 720p may be?) I think it could be worth a try? I'm... not to good at this stuff.

Loading screen issue...

Win XP3

AMD 3200

Single core (admitted one, but I've played any game I bought smoothely so far)

ATI Radeon 1950XT

2 GB

By the way Congratulations devs! That game looks awefully awesome! I can't wait to get past the introduction. Aaaaaand I don't want it to glitch.

I'm positively convinced it's possible as iniside underlined

I don't have the game yet but i'm going to buy it tommorow! (jan 29, live in EU). As i said a few hours ago:
If ME2 isn't made for single core fine, so be it. BUT PLEASE BIOWARE!! fix this issue! If you release a patch i won't complain here again about a bug that is caused by a single core! I don't care if there are more bugs then usual, but i want to be able to play your games at least!

EDIT: This video confirms that the game can run on single cores, sure their is lag but look at the 2 secs of smooth gameplay. Notice that must be 20-30 fps. So your game CAN run well on single cores (if you fix this issue at leastImage IPB)

System Specs:
Windows XP SP3
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ (2 GHz)
Radeon HD 3850 512MB (DirectX 9.0c)
2GB RAM

Ahh good, my theory of the ME2config not recognizing the core despite the system recognizing it seems to be re-affirmed! Which Operating system are you using? Also, I wonder if this is a matter of support for various chipsets thats an issue. Ive noticed a few people here with my chipset (3004 MHz intel core 2 duo cpu e8400) and similar builds that theyre having the multi-core problem as well.

Same Problem here, just after I click "male" the game starts to load but freezes a few seconds after that.

I'm even running a QuadCore, but the crazy config-tool just detects 1 CPU, 1 Core .

Intel® Core™2 Quad CPU Q9550 @ 2.83GHz

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260

4 GB RAM

WinVista Ultimate 64bit

The unofficial "fix" works just fine, but I feel I'm missing a huge part of the game without those videos.
