I would think that if 100% of all single cores had this problem, this forum would be 100+ pages by now.

EDIT:   I mean - if 100% of single cores were unable to play without using the unofficial "fix" (and subsequent side-effects from that fix), then this forum would be much busier.

I have a dual core athlon and im having problems as people with single core....because the game is only showing 1 core in the game config. Which means its not reading my system correctly. I've reinstalled and nothing changes. What I want to know is why is the game showing I only have 1 core? game files could be illiterate.

Sadly belittling question: Does the OS know you have more then one processing core?

I'm thinking it's either Bio-Ware is asking the wrong question (as in their not polling the system directly) or another "Microsofts knows best" and Mass Effect is not being told the truth. I'm thinking the system is not taxed enough to bother with the second core, so it's leaving it off or idle. (Some CPUs will shut-down cores in core to save power if they're not techically needed.)

jrbabineau reports it's running without the stutter/lag at all on a single core here:  social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/106/index/772168/28#806912

Also, those with the stutter/lag would see it all the time if it were a purely single core issue, and not be able to clear it up with a quick save, quick load.

Yes it does but it doesn't show in config in the game.....I recommend everyone look at it to make sure it not just me, I know some others have seen it there aswell

Thanks for pointing that out, Nivas. However, it looks like jrbabineau is using a version of the unofficial "fix" which replaces the bik files.

I had the same problem as every1 else here so I tried reinstalling the k-lite codec pack. It seems to have fixed the problem. Hope this helps =)

Hmm. Thats interesting. I didn't think that would have anything to do with it, but I'm giving it a shot right now since my Codec Pack is a bit out of date anyway.

Replace all the load*.bik files with empty dummy files

Hi all, I have this problem too...
My comp:Athlon 64 3800+ (single core), 3GB ram, Radeon 4850 512MB, WinXp Sp3, no antivir software :D, no codecs.
But i had made a little test.I had installed ME on my brothers comp (Athlon x2 e4850 (2,5 GHz), Radeon 4850 1GB, WinXp Sp3, with some antivir and codecs) and guess what? It worked perfect. So i think the problem is processor, not codecs or any other programs,
Shame on u Bioware, that u didnt tell me if i wanna play ME2 i have to buy new proc ;)

Btw. Sorry for my bad english.

@down

Yea its true, my bad, but still shame on u Bioware ;)

1. What the issue you are seeing is, and where.

2. Your hardware specs (as reported by the configuration utility)

3. Your *actual* hardware specs (if there is any difference between what you see in the config util and what you have reported in your BIOS).

1. Freezing upon creating a new game.

2. Processor: Intel® Core™2 Quad CPU Q8200 @ 2.33GHz

Clock speed: 2332 MHz Physical Memory: 2.99 GB

Display Adapter: NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT VRAM: 1.00 GB

Driver Version 5.10.0.5559

Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Proffessional

Direct X Version: Direct X 9.0c (Mar2009) or later

3. There is no difference in the hardware specs and this specs above. the only difference is when i click on System, it shows # CPUs as 1. There should be four as it is a QUADcore. I cannot get Win XP to recognize 4 cores either. this is what i have been saying for a while. People have fixed this very problem by having their OS recognize multiple cores.

Here's my system specs

OS: Windows vista - 32 bit home edition

CPU: Intel® Core™2 Duo T5750 @ 2.00Ghz

Video card: ATI mobility Radeon HD 3650

The K-Lite codec reinstall seemed to of fixed the loading screen freeze but now the game crashes randomly on the cut scene. Just when I was getting into it too...... =(

Alright, after reading Sylenced's post on page 38 I have tried playing the game using the "-nomoviestartup" option and it works perfeclty, it skips all videos (including the loading screens) but of course keeps the ingame cinematics, and absolutely NO stuttering / choppy stuff, even though I use a single core.

Thank you Sylenced.

Edit : And the game runs VERY smoothly too, I might add.

Well, I tried the green loading screen fix, but the game still stutters like crazy. After testing with the wait method, I think the stuttering only happens when the game has to load up a cinematic. Everything based on the engine after a cinematic movie (except strangely the options menu after the first loading screen is done) stutters. Greening out the stupid cinematic with the sun vastly improved performance in the cutscene with Miranda (measured by the fact that he almost completely flicked the cigarette in 1 stutter rather than taking like 5), and noticeably improved the situation aboard the Normandy, allowing rather large movements between stutters provided nothing with significant particle effects happened. After character creation, game is running just fine. I suggest for stuttering replacing ME2_Opening_SunMid_ESN.bik and ME2_Opening_SunMid_INT.bik with the greenscreen provided by the MEGAUPLOAD "fix", here http://www.megaupload.com/?d=1KHDBLIL
