@blorbie:  Yes, she did.  But, it helps to point at what the actual problem with the game is.  It shows for a fact, that the load screen movies that play are causing the crash.  My best guess is it's the process that's playing the movies, as by replacing them with a static image (green block) seems to get around the freeze.

@Myliel and blindmessiah:  I can't seem to find Sylenced's post... went back through pages 37 and 38 and I don't see it.

I've used the unofficial fix, and managed to get off the first station, but the cinematic of the shuttle, before and after talking to Miranda and Jacob about Shepard's past caused the stutter/lag to begin again.  A quick f5 save, followed by an f9 load completly cleared it up...  I tend to believe that this is not a single core problem at all, as the rest of the game (especially the more graphic intensive parts, ie: combat, conversations, explosions, etc) all run crystal clear and perfectly fine.  I think the act of loading a saved game kills one of the procedures/functions/processes connected to loading/playing the bink movies, and frees up the processor.  It doesn't help with the original problem of locking up, but that problem is obviously related to the load movies in some way.

Also, switching from 1024x768 to my native resolution of 1280x1024 actually lowered the number of stutters I was seeing on the Normandy during the Save Joker mission... I don't think it has anything to do with the problem, but interesting none the less.

My original problem post with system info here: social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/106/index/772168/37#816438

Find MassEffect2.exe in your MassEffect2\\Binaries folder. Create a shortcut of MassEffect2.exe. Right-click the shortcut and select properties. Where it says target, you want it to look like. "C:\\Program Files\\Mass Effect 2\\Binaries\\MassEffect2.exe" -nomoviestartup

Erm, there should only be one backslash but post put in two for some reason.... In either case. This got my game to run. And it runs all nice and pretty and fast. But i do miss out on a vid/clip/cutscene here and there. The Miranda-Illuman scene plays fine even with the star in the back. I don't get to see the normady flying in or the big ship blasty deal that happens. In all I'm just happy to see the game do SOMETHING. weee~

The Sylenced's post is on page 36.

But I would like to ask to those who said it works. What IS the method, please.

I think you would help a lot of people by telling us how do you do.

Find the masseffect2.exe file on your computer, make a shortcut, and add the option to it.

Mine looks like this:

"C:\\Program Files\\Mass Effect 2\\Binaries\\MassEffect2.exe" -nomoviestartup

This does get rid of the lockups/jitters, but not playing those bink cutscenes cuts out a decent chunk of the story. Honestly I'd rather play with the stuttering after story scenes, since I have no idea what those story movies show, this being my first playthrough and all.

Definitely proves that the bink (prerendered) cutscenes and their implementation are what is causing the stuttering / loading screen lockups, though.

That it does... hopefully that syseng is jumping on this... although with all computer problems, finding the problem is often only the FIRST hard part.

thanks for that got it setup Ill try when I get back in a hour or two...just to double check, it removes the loading screens and nothing else?

Basically I was wondering if it drops the cut-scences/cinematics also or just the loading screen "movies"??

When you get to the citadel part,or the last mission where you get a shuttle, play with movies, else you'll see a black screen with sound playing in background, but until then, silky smooth.

This is the way I solved my Dual Core only 1 core working problem. I have an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+ on a windows XP OS, it took me a few hours to figure the problem and fix it, this might not be the solution for you so if it isnt you might need to go looking on google.

Ok heres a way to see if your cores are working, You go to your windows task manager (Ctr Alt Dlt) make sure under View - CPU History that you have it as "One Graph Per CPU" and go to the performance tab, if both cores are working there should be 2 (or maybe more for quad core i dont know) graphs side by side under cpu usage history. If theres only 1 long graph under CPU usage history and its already set to "One Graph Per CPU" the option might be greyed out all together. That means not all your cores are detected. Also, in device manager under "Computer" it has ACPI or something other than ACPI Multi Processor PC. If it has something other than the Multi Processor PC it means the reason your second Core isnt being detected is because you have to wrong HAL set up. Google it and try and find a way to change it safely (might require you to reinstall windows but make sure to check if you need to do anything in the install differently)

Omen85 did you need to reinstall your OS? I am curious

Just as a precaution to everyone else, I tried a HAL workaround that didn't require me to reinstall Windows and it actually ended up BSODing my OS.

I couldn't find my XP Pro disc, hence I had to go to Windows 7.  This ended up leading to my solution (see my earlier post)

The -nomoviestartup command removes all movies, loading screens,in-game cinematics, prevents 99% freezes and stuttering, but the 1% is the citadel and last mission, since those parts need a movie to initiate.

//sorry about double posts

I definitely appreciate those that were just able to find a temporary workaround for this mess. But, I'm really interested in the story, and by missing out on the cutscenes I'm afraid that I'd be missing out on important plot points. I'm going to continue to wait for the time being and hope that Bioware reps come out with an official fix really soon....

Seems like many people with windows 7 64 bit (like me) have the launch problem with the game. Not able to start the game, like mine, to crashing at start up. From what I have seen most have more than 2 cores for their CPUs. i'm going to give it one more try with wondows XP ( a fresh installed copy) to see if anything changes. I'll let you guys know of the result in about 2 hours when I am done installing everything.

Hope this one works. this is my last attempt in dealing with this issue. If the problem persists I will ask for a refund from D2D. i have no other option :(

There used to be a similar issue in U3 aswelll, with the render being stalled, but that was fixed with a configuration edit, which ME2 lacks, being powered by Unreal 3.5 and configs are embedded client side.
You,Bioware, have my utmost respect since Baldur's Gate,I have faith this issue is only a matter of time before being hotfixed.

@ Sylenced and anybody using the filepath he is showing. Someone commented earlier that the posts are showing up with double-slashes when they should only be using one, so maybe that is causing Dakeyras his issue with the command.

-nomoviestartup works... Granted it was a second play through, and I was very brief in the conversations, skipping all the investigates and choosing renegade style options, but in 5 minutes I got to the illusive man interview, where in my first play through it took me an hour and a half. I want to say about half an hour of that could be attributed to the stutter/lag alone. I don't know how I feel about playing without any movies though... not seeing the Normandy blow up kinda lessens the experience for me. On the otherhand, so does the stutter/lag problem.

For those asking, the -nomoviestartup removes ALL cinematic movies. In other words, it doesn't play, or attempt to play any of the movies in the movie folder of your install. The unofficial work around, only replaces the movies named load*.bik, and the unskippable bioware and ea logos at game start up. All you're doing when you "use" the unofficial fix is replacing a .bik movie with a .bik file green "picture". So the game loads the "movie" but it's just a static, unmoving image. There's no story line in the load movies.
