Find MassEffect2.exe in your MassEffect2\\\\\\\\Binaries folder. Create a shortcut of MassEffect2.exe. Right-click the shortcut and select properties. Where it says target, you want it to look like. "C:\\\\\\\\Program Files\\\\\\\\Mass Effect 2\\\\\\\\Binaries\\\\\\\\MassEffect2.exe" -nomoviestartup

That fix worked for me too. Now everything is running flawlessly.

This works for me as well.  I get the in game cinematics and when it comes to load screens just a blank screen.  Loads real fast.  Combat, audio, cinematics, and etc run perfect.  I'm seriously doubting the single core issue being the heart of the problem.  I'm running it perfectly now with this:

Vista Home Basic
2 Gigs RAM
Geforce 9500 512 MB
AMD Semperon 3400

I just wanted to say the -nomoviestartup (one s) worked perfectly for me, and now devs just need to find a way so we can see movies and play too! Thanks all, game runs flawlessly just want to see those scenes

The so-called SingleCore Issue is , excuse the vulgarity, bull****. There is people on every forums telling the game works perfectly for them with a single core. And the "-nomoviesetup fix" (which still doesn't want to work for me even if I think that I do it right(Is it some kind of punishment form my computer?)) tends to prove that the problems come frome the movies files.

The question is: What did BioWare do differently with the bink movies in ME2 that they didn't do in ME or DA:O? Is it simply that the movies are 720p? Is it possible to re-encode the movies to a slightly lower quality, ie the original ME quality? Quite frankly, the game is beautiful, and runs more smoothly on my single core than the original Mass Effect ever did, well, minus the movies part.

with out the -nomoviestartup fix

all the movies on my pc work fine, it's not until you get to that load screen where you import your charactor form the first game, I was having problems.

with -nomoviestartup fix everything works like a charm. I also have movie files that working fine too. Infact i would say the game is flawless.

also if this game runs on a out dated 360xbox it should run fine on a good pc.

Nivas. That is the exact same for me.

And so yes, I was able to get it lauch. just before quitting. But I get used to solve everything at the last minut. I should have been John Mclalne...

Anyway...My problem is that, I don't know why...but I needed two sapce bbetween" exe"" and "-nomovie..."

Great thanks to Sylenced.

And hope that the community's action will help Bioware to lauch a patch very soon.

All I know is that the fact that the new ME2 cutscenes are in 720p SHOULD make no difference as to the cause of the actual lockup, even if they are playing while the game is pre loading data. I watch high quality TV shows in 720p on my rig all the time, usually while multi tasking a fair bit with other graphics in the background and they still do not skip or cause my single core CPU to work that much harder. So you would think that these cutscenes in game should be no special exception. No, it's definitely some sort of coding bug related to what I think is the entire transition process from pre rendered to non.

I have found something in the game file that might correct the crash when you do the -nomoviestartup thing.

I am off to test it out, if it work I will post the detail, but give me a few since I am only just pass the prologue, but since will be go fluently now I can get to citadel without too much trouble or is it an other video then the one when you dock in the citadel ?

Ok what I had in mind didn't help with the Citadel loading failure. At least was worth a try.

I can't believe it. BioWare, have you AGAIN not tested your game thoroughly?!

The fix above with the blank bik files was created by the groups that pirated the game. It works, but instead of all the bik movies(loading screens, some cutscenes) you get a blank screen. There is another trick more more tech-savvy people. The reason for most of these game freezes and choppy movies is that a single core processor cant deal with laoding game assets and playing a high quality bik at the same time. So, you can download RadVideoTools and use them to lower the quality of the biks using compression. They vids will look worse, but they will be easier to show for your processor.

Ok this is on the 3rd page of this thread, I'm really amazed, after going through all 41 pages, that no one picked up on this.  It is pretty solidly clear to me that whatever the problem is, it's in those biks since the only sure fire fix to date has been to illiminate them.

At the same time we don't want them gone, so has anyone tried this?  Is anyone able to compress them and while lowering the quality make them run?  I will play the movies on lowered quality, I don't care, as long as I can actually play them.

Hmm... I must have totally spaced on that post Spiro... lol, maybe I can try something after my wow raid tonight.

@Vetican: I agree, I do the same thing, but there's a difference in watching an avi or mkv file on some media player and watching a bik file, I've tested so far with the bink player from Rad, and even the original Mass Effect movies slam my processor up to about 90%. I never go that high in task manager even while multitasking watching non-bink HD movies.

We're aware of the issue, and will be working on providing a fix in the *second* patch. The first patch is going to be released very shortly, and thus it is too late for this fix.

To be clear, the fix does ONLY impact single core users (as well as dual core users who only have one core reported by their operating system (beyond our control). As a result, this is lower than our min-spec, so it's not a matter of "not testing the game". We're doing this so we can create the best game possible, and make sure that everyone is able to play.

Ill post more information as I get it. We will try to release this second patch in a timely manner, but we also want to make sure any patch does not create new issues.

In the meantime, I encourage users to try some of the 'home grown' solutions no this thread (which, by the way are very clever), and also encourage those with dual core machines which are being reported as single core to try and find a source of that (again, outside the scope and beyond the control of BioWare).

Thanks.

Thanks for the reply Michael, particularly the part where you're taking single core users into consideration with this second patch. And again, I appreciate the temporary workaround you other folks came up with. I'm just going to wait patiently however (at least I can go back to DA:O pretty soon as the Return to Ostagar content will supposedly be ready next week or so), only because for me not having any movies or cinematics would ruin my personal game experience. It wouldn't matter as much if I were going on, say, my 2nd or 3rd playthrough, but since I just got the game along with everyone else, I want to see everything.

I am really grateful that Bioware does so much for fans. They could have said "this is a single core problem and since that is below minimal req. you have to upgrade your computer". But they acknowledging the problem and fixing for people with single cores. I am very happy and if this fix works i will be overjoyed, because the game is really great even without cutscenes, the way i'm playing it now.(this post may seem overly positive, but it is sincere.).

That unofficial fix that replaces the bik files works, as far as the game doesn't hang on the loading screen anymore. That would be a good solution, as it only replaces the generic loading animations. Unfortunately, the first real 3D scene lags horribly. Curiously enough, the -nomoviestartup option fixes that completely, but then of course NO movies play anymore - no way I'm going to play the game like that.

Now, really. The movies CAN be played, and the game CAN run without lag - just not both, for whatever reason?! This better be fixed soon! And come on with the "single core not supported" meme. It's obviously not only happening to those, and since a fast single core is obviously capable enough of running the game, there was no reason to neglect single core CPUs in the first place! This bug should never have slipped through QA. BioWare, you were an example of polished games and customer support once...
