In order for windows to recognize both cores, it seems you need to change standard pc to ACPI in device manager. Problem is, you need to repair/reformat windows in order to do that. I dont have a disk. Yipee. L4D2 and MW2 work fine on my PC. This game would have worked fine too. How could have this happened? They had to have known and just rushed it for 1/22/2010.

I refuse to play this without the videos, its like watching a movie while skipping scenes. Please patch this up ASAP.

Does anybody know awc.dll error and not being able to start the game are only for the digital download version or do they also appear in the CD based game? i'm in the process of refunding for the digital one but i want to know if it is safe to get the CD one. D2D version was insanely glitchy.

Question: I'm seriously thinking of upgrading to a new PC in the near future (possibly next week), and like all new computers nowadays, it'll come bundled with Windows 7. Would Win 7 detect both cores automatically (it would actually be a dual core AMD processor running at 2.7 ghz)? If not, how does one get it to do so?

From what I've read about ACPI /multi-core stuff. Windows 7 should have no trouble finding all the cores. And if for some reason it does, it just takes a small tweak in msconfig or such. "You'd still need to google that specificly -if- that comes up"

So I used the quick -nomoviestartup fix - Allows me to play the actual game perfectly.
As far as how many movies I'm missing--I have no idea how much I"ve missed because I never knew where the movies played in the first place!
Curious to know if anyone knows what constitutes as a "movie" within the game, because I feel as if I'm understanding a good portion of the game.
Finally, is ANYONE getting a voice issue during "personal response" scenes??
I find that ALL the voices are extremely quiet.  They all sound distant and muffled.

I configured the sound setting within game, Music and Sound FX volumes are both 50% while the voice volume is 100%.
Voices during game play are loud and clear as can be, but the "personal response" scenes are impossible to follow without subtitles going.
Wondering if ANYONE else is having this issue as well--Solutions?

The -nomoviestartup fix works like a charm. The game runs fine with most settings set to med/high on my "obsolete" single core AMD CPU. But the lack of story/movies is really frustrating. Somewhere in this thread someone mentioned downloading a utility from RAD Gaming Tools site which can be used to force the *.bik movies to a lower resolution. Anyone know the details on that? I can't find the post again and am hoping if that works maybe we'll be able to run the game with the movies, even if they look somewhat crappy.

So anyway I want to rant now, feel free to skip below.

Why would Bioware even make the decision to potentially cut out on a large number of PC users by coding the game to blow off single core users like this. The PC gaming market is already small and I can't imagine decisions like this help. I understand that people with multi-core PCs are having the same issue but it's root stems from Bioware choosing to blow off the single core peeps in the first place. Otherwise the game would've worked fine even if it did not recognize multi-cores. I'm sorry if I sound ungrateful but this does not make sense to me at all. Loading screens aren't THAT bad are they? I love Bioware games but they should really learn from Blizzard and adopt a when it's done policy. They are good enough to have that luxury imo.

Michael,

Thanks tons! Seriously, very much appreciated.

I do wish to ask one question: is the fix upcoming in the second patch just going to stop the freeze on load issue, or is it going to prevent the stuttering/freezing caused by certain cinematics as well?

Thanks again for taking the time to analyze and fix this issue :)

At least you guys can get into the game, I haven't even seen the game since I bought it.lucky you people :(

PS. you guys should really get your money back from your BETA testers, they were either drunk the whole time, were bunch of nnobs who didn't know what they were suppose to do or you didn't have any testers to begin with. A game can't possibly be this glitchy!

Went into BIOS and did not see any option for enabling multi cores. In fact, it says the CPU is a 2.0 GHZ when it is actually a 3.0 dual core. I have windows service pack 3 and am still getting one core.

I tried to google this problem but cant seem to find a solution. Can you guys help me?

the issue isn't in BIOS the issue is with windows. The setting should read ACPI Multiprocessor.

This is the HAL driver (hardware abstraction layer - basically tells windows whats what). If its not set properly then it won't see the multiple cores. Typically windows detects this automatically however, if you installed from a windows xp disc pre-service pack 2 it will not.

There are ways to upgrade the HAL from within windows just google HAL + windows xp + update or so. It involves installing the newer drivers if device manager sees them.

I'd like to caveat that it's not a recommended approach and should you begin experimenting ensure you have a backup of your important data and be prepared to reinstall should things go belly up.

Now before you scream omg bioware - realize you've actually just had your pc misconfigured since you first installed and have to date only been using one core of two :)

My problem is fixed and game is working perfectly.  My PC was freezing during start-up movies and in start of gameplay for last few days.

As noted previously, I edited Shortcut to include this in Target field replacing current entry (keep quotes)

"C:\\\\\\\\Program Files\\\\\\\\Mass Effect 2\\\\\\\\Binaries\\\\\\\\MassEffect2.exe" -nomoviestartup

Hope this helps Image IPB

Thanks a lot dude!
Single core AMD too.
Worked perfectly \\o/

Yes, the -nomoviestartup works, but you lose all movies, not just the startup-movies. It's like cutting random pieces from a movie.

And indeed, with that "fix" in place, the real 3D scenes so far work PERFECTLY FINE on the highest settings on my single core CPU, so there was NO reason in the first place to neglect and obviously not even once test the game on that hardware. What were they thinking, I wonder? Those requirements on the box may even discourage people with older hardware from buying the game when in fact their system would be totally capable of running the game - were it not for that stupid and completely unnecessary bug with the bik files of course.

Shame on you, BioWare. You never fixed the sound stutter bug in ME 1, and now this. Oh well, that's what we get for being not only honest customers, but even buying a game on release day.

This, I agree, is really strange. I can play Crisis just fine on a single core processor - yet ME2 was designed, seemingly, to not work on single core processors at all; not just "run poorly", but not run at all. I guess this is a sign of the times. Upgrade or die to industry Darwinism.

I still find it strange that I can run Dragon Age just fine, no problems what-so-ever, yet ME2 simply wont load at all.

What the hell.

EDIT: Yeah, and disabling the movies works - but you're chopping parts of the game out completely. I really don't see that as a fix. I guess it's better than nothing.

It's been said before, but it bears repeating: Bioware, thank you for working on a fix to this problem. I'm disappointed that I can't play the game, and I'm obviously not the only one who misinterpreted the minimum requirements on the box. Regardless, it's within your rights to blow this off and I appreciate you stepping up for your fans. Good luck!

FYI, I have a single core and the exact same problem. Specs as follows:
AMD Athlon™ 64 Processor 3800+
3 Gigs RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GT
Win XP SP3

thanks for the -nomoviestarup info, man now the game runs flawlessly and i can watch a movie then exit and return with nomoviestartup and continue lag free, heh its a crazy workaround with green square loading screens and exiting and reentering but its working great now. 2-3 second loading times and only a single laptop core!

You beat me dude! i can bring the menu for the game, when i click on play i get awc.dll error. i formated my hard drive twice, once installed win 7 after and tonight installed win XP. in WIN 7 the game doesn't even give me an error, it just doesn't start! in XP it gives me the error.

well at least this new version of XP is working really good and fast in other applications. you know, when you install a fresh copy of windows everything is super perfect for a while so that's a plus side of trying to install mass effect!

i gave up on this game. i'll try it again when a patch comes out. we are pretty much programming the game ourselves in these forums. We paid money for a final product, to me it seems they have mistaken us with BETA testers! Just release the game and see what happens sort of thing :/

If bioware wants to fail then let em.....they really shouldn't have put a requirement that is as low as it is. If you wanted people to just buy it through xbox then you shouldn't have released it onto pc. I wish everyone good luck with this problem but im getting my money back. I just don't see how they could miss something this big, and now I probably won't get SWTOR either bc of this.

Wow! You rock! What if you do have ACPI Multiprocessor under computer? Will this be a Bios issue, and what's the best way to update? It also shows 4 seperate cores under processors. Task manager has 1 graph, but reads both a red and green line for CPU usage. Any ideas? Specs below

Q6600 core 2 quad
XP pro SP3
2G ram

Just to alert peeps. I just tried a bios update/flash on my system. I *almost* perma borked my windows install with my tooling. I got VERY lucky being able to restore windows to non-bluescreen state. The short of it is, unless you KNOW what yer messing with. DON'T MESS WITH IT! "If it ain't broke don't fix it" comes to mind. I figured my system was broke from not posting my triple procs in task manager. Thereby freeing me up to -fix- my bios. WRONG LOL. If it's only slightly broke...it can get BROKER. The only thing I've read alternatively is to reinstall with a slipstreamed sp2 sp3?XP disc. Which a pretty intensive deal. So in short. If your system runs fine on everything else as is, it's probably a darn good idea to leave it that way. Unless you have alot of spare time to tinker or spare dough to upgrade. -That's my story- :)

I'm not sure if I want to kiss whomever shared the no movie switch, or be angry at Bio-Ware for not documenting it!

Just crashed on a unrelated bug when I tried to shift a power around on the quick bar, but just played the game from the start to almost completeing Omega without issues of any kind shape or form!
