Add me to the list of miserable sods who are experiencing this exact same issue.
I cant get passed the first load screen. This is soooooo frustrating!!!! Been waiting for this game for so long & now it doesn't work!
Tab16 : Where did you get that info that Bioware is working on a fix but that it'll probably only be available in the 2nd patch?

I work as a game tester - so I thought I'd go investigate myself a little.
I'm posting repro steps here:
*Note: I only tested this on WIndows Vista Home Premium* (Dual Core only)
1. Deinstall your current NVIDIA PhsyX drivers from the Add / Remove Programs section.
2. Insert your Mass Effect CD 1 - go to: \\\\\\\\software\\\\\\\\ and install "PhysX_9.09.0814_SystemSoftware.exe"
3. Start Mass Effect 2
4. Alt-Tab back to Windows - hit CTRL-ALT-DELETE and bring up the Task Manager.
5. Select the "Processes" Tab and scroll down to find "MassEffect2.exe"
6. Right-Click on the process and select "Set Affinity"
7. If you have a dual core - you should see "CPU 0" and "CPU 1" selected.
8. De-select "CPU 1" and hit ok. Close the Task Manager.
9. Continue (or restart, to be sure) the game.
- I have had no trouble so far.
It's still crashing though - so Bioware should still look into this.

I still cant even run the game, it wont even load the game from my desktop it just goes straight to a black screen and i get an APPCRASH error, any ideas??
It is most likely doing this because you have not run the configuration utility that came with the game.

It is 100% single core issue, if you have a multi core and it does not work windows is not seeing your cores. That is what the problem was with mine updated the bios and it plays fine now. The box does clearly state minimum requirements as a duel core so I would not count on a fix.
Can you not read? Michael Gamble said Bioware is making a patch to fix it.
Can you read your the one that bought a game that clearly states in the min. requirerments it needs a dual core.

Just upgraded the CPU to a AMD Turion ml-44 2.4 Ghz. Everything else is above specs. Idk why it wouldn't work with this CPU when Alienware said it definitely would.
So is this going to be fixed in that 2nd patch?

But seriously this really pisses me off that I bought a game that I really enjoy and I wanted to support this company and not torrent the game so I bought it with the little money I had, and this ****ing **** comes up that there product doesn't even work. I mean come on Bioware your first priorty should be the game and us, not this stupid patch that won't even fix anything or a DLC that has somehow magicaly popped up. Seriously Bioware, wake the **** up.
and yes my game freezes at loading screen. someone help.

THe no intro "fix" is what you are looking for. I will vouche for gamecopy I am using that "fix" and have used gamecopy for many no cd exe for a long time.

I turn on autosave so that every time I mass effected to other systems I can just hit load to load the autosave to the warped star system, saves time on doing another save then load.

i have single core 3500+ and a ATI 4870X2 graphics card. Two/three days ago I had the loading freezing problem after getting my collector edition. In the end I chose to use the unofficial fix because after scanning with Norton, I dont see what harm a bunch of empty.bik files can do to my computer, and if I have to sacrifice some loading screen for ealier time to play the game, then so be it. I am now about 22 hours into the game, game runs smooth as a baby's skin with all graphics maximized. Only times the in game cutscenes or in game play get choppy is after SOME(not every single one) pre-rendered cinematic. In these situations I bring two cups of hot coffee, because one cup is not enough to last the whole cinematic. XD

Same. This is not a single core problem. I am running on a old 3.3 ghz P4 and am doing the same. Ive come to the conclusion that for those scenes I press the spacebar after reading/hearing the sentence then it hops to the next.
The only problem I have now *****SPOILER******
After getting the Reaper IFF theres a little cutscene of it being ready/take a shuttle where my screen goes black imediatly after. I can move around (I can hear my footsteps) I have even started a conversation with some people but cannot quick save or load.
****END SPOILER****
quick save/quick load is the answer for mass jumping and any other time this happens.
All this is the same for a friend of mine. His compe is brand new. Two months ago he built his own (yes he is a computer head he knows wtf he is doing) so this is not a hardware issue.

Some of us had already preordered the game WAY before the min specs were "unveiled", so we couldnt possibly have known that.

And this cutscene/load screen problem is not a single core problem. I have a a single core the game runs great other then the load/cut scene problem.

Thanks I will need to attempt that when I am more sober

If game companies want to fight piracy, this is not helping.
Actually, if everyone pirated the game rather than paying for it, Bioware wouldn't be able to pay people to fix it so that we can play the whole thing with movies.
This whole user hardware mess is exactly why a lot of developers have given up making games for PCs and only release on consoles. I'm *hugely* grateful that Bioware gives enough of a s**t to not only make games for PCs, but also to stand behind them when they're released.
If they had done it right in the first place, like many other companies have done, then it would not put more fuel in the fire of piracy. Which is not the direction you want to go like you pointed out. If everyone pirated games, these people would not have jobs and the company would not make as much money.
The PC market is still a big market for games believe it or not. Getting people upset about a product they paid for is not good for any business. The user hardware mess is not something new. Granted it is a little more advanced, but it is the same underlying issues since peripheral video cards and different OSs came out.
As some have pointed out, this specific issue is quite ridiculous. The game runs FINE on single core CPUs, it is just the movie files that are fudging things up. Implementing movie files is the least of a company's worries. Yet Bioware (as much as I love them), have screwed the pooch on this one.

And guess what? so does L4D2 which requires more power than ME2, yet L4D2 works fine. Plus there are single core's that are powerful enough (AKA AMD )and if you actually read the posts, you'd see that the game works fine on single core, it's just those cinamatics which are also effect dual core users. Stop fail trolling and read the actual thread.
