My single core system works with the nomoviestartup fix. I miss out on the videos but the game seems to work perfectly otherwise. Still waiting for a patch to enjoy the "full" game.

only til you get to the IFF mission :(

Just use the nomovieintro fix, and replace the files suggested by this post:

http://social.biowar...72168/47#837079

As a single core user I was able to finish the IFF mission and the game with those suggested replacements. Only replace the files he suggests, no others. I had all of the files included in the fix replaced and it kept me from finishing the game. Once I followed his instructions, I was able to finish the game.

I just bought ME2 and have the same issue, everything seems fine until the loading screen then crashes,  system specs are AMD 64 3200+ 2 gb ram, 7600 nvidia sli x2.

Be patient man.  I've played a little bit with the no movies work around, but decided to stop when a patch was confirmed.

Trust me, if you're a fan of Mass Effect 1, this game will knock your socks off.  Its worth waiting a couple more weeks for it.

I waited five days to get this game sent to me from GameStop and now I'm stuck with a very expensive loading screen.

If Bioware is looking, I'm running an:

-AMD Athlon 64 Processor 4000+ 2.6 Ghz.

-4.00 GB of Ram

-Nvidia GeForce 9600GT

I think I'll wait a few days for the official Bioware patch that I pray comes sooner rather than later. I've been burned one too many times on megaupload.

It's a legit archive. I've downloaded it already, and you can virus scan it just to be sure.

Yeah, it only contains .bik files and even a readme. You can always scan the file if you're uncertain, but it does work.

So I copy the files he listed in my movies directory and everything will works fine? No freeze, with cinematics?

If I were you, I'd back up the original files before overwriting them. But yeah, it works.

You may still encounter a stuttering bug that occurs after certain cutscenes.

Aside from that, gameplay for the most part works.

a stuttering bug?

And does it still shows cinematics?

From what people are saying. This is a quick fix for game-play only, no movies.

Edit: No it apears that if you replace the .bik files using the work around provided in the thread (link at top of page, or here http://social.biowar...72168/47#837079)

You might be able to do everything up to the IFF mission.  (Quote from the link i posted) "When you get to the IFF, follow what I wrote above in reverse
(overwrite all the other load.blk files with the normal ones except for
the ones above), get through that part of the game."

Yes i know this is a fix for Single Core gamers, but guess what, Im a single core gamer. And doing this will clear up ALOT of people who are posting here about this issue, so everybody can focus on the other issues, like the multi-core ones.

Updated all the drivers and was still freezing up. Than got the latest nvidia beta driver and still froze. But seemed it wasn't totally freezing up so let 20 minutes go by and finally went into the movie 20 minutes later the start menu. Turned off boinc manager turned Avast antivirus to gaming mode and all other programs running in the background, But when I turn Comodo internet security completely off the game loaded right up.It's been working great ever cents

I agree that this thread has become a dumping ground for several unrelated problems. So, to address the original issue...

I have a single core. I added the "nomovie" command line. And still my game freezes at the character creation screen. Every time. There's no opening cinematic. Just what appears to be a glowing mass relay and some other graphics trying to load up on the screen with a small "Loading..." in the lower right corner. Is there a fix for that? Hard to tell with all this file replacing, archives, torrent files, unofficial work-arounds, and adding "nomoviestartup" to the target line.

Seems to me that loading a screen to create a character isn't a cinematic, just an interface. So, did I miss something in these bloody 54 (!!) pages?

I've the exact same problem, minus the fact I didn't add anything

It's buggering up at the Citadel for me, wont go past the loading screen, everything outside of it works fine, this, along with the long standing Dragon Age loading problem, is really pissy-offy.

Quidom, if you're getting that, then you messed up somehow in adding the -nomoviestartup switch properly. I'd go over the directions on how to do that again.

I asked earlier, and glad someone else has asked: is the upcoming patch 2 fix going to fix just the loading screen freeze problem, or the stuttering/freezing during cinematics bug, or both? I actually think they're probably both a result of the same issue, and thus the fix should take care of both, but would be comforting to have that confirmed.

Yeah, the -nomoviestartup doesn't play well with the Citadel, I crashed too.

For me, the solution has been to have the green screen file overwriting all the load*.blk files, and then have two shortcuts. One is with -nomoviestartup, and the other without it. If I run into something like the Citadel crash, I fire it up without the switch, but otherwise I play mostly with the -nomoviestartup switch. So far I haven't found a movie cinematic that adds anything other than some nice visuals... I haven't found any instance yet of actually losing a plot point or story. (beyond the intro, anyway).

Adding -nomoviestartup to the target line after making a shortcut to the .exe works for me, and I had what sounds like exactly your issue. It didnt work until I added a space between what is already there and what I added--took me a couple of tries before I realized that was the problem. Hope this helps--and that patch #2 gets here soon! Single core AMD processor BTW....

**FOUND A SOLUTION FOR USERS WITH MULTICORE PROCESSORS RUNNING INTO FREEZES**

THIS SOLUTION DOES NOT INVOLVE DOWNLOADING ANYTHING.

If you are encountering freezes, but have a multicore processor (and otherwise meet or beat the game requirements) this may work for you:

First of all, check the ME2 config utility. When I checked mine (before the solution) it showed that it was detecting my CPU's name correctly, but only showing # of Cores as 1.

Turns out, so was the rest of the PC. Must have had this processor for months and not known that I wasn't using it properly...duh.

Here's what I did (credit goes to the Australian tech support site I found this from)...

1) Go to "Start"

2) Type in "run"

3) Type in "msconfig"

4) Go to the "Boot" tab

5) Select "Advanced Options"

6) At this point the startup number of processors should show "1" and should be unable to be changed.

7) Uncheck "Number of Processors"

8) Check "Detect HAL"

9) Click "Ok", then click "Apply"

10) Reboot your PC.

If all goes according to plan, when you reload, you should be able to do this:

11) Go to "Start"

12) Type in "run"

13) Type in "msconfig"

14) Go to the "Boot" tab

15) Select "Advanced Options"

16) You should again see the start up number of processors. However, this time when you click the drag down menu you should be able to select the proper number of cores (4 in my case).

17) Click "Ok", then click "Apply"

At this point you should check your Task Manager--if this fix worked for you then under the performance tab you will be able to see as many CPU Usage History graphs as you have CPU cores (again, 4 in my case). Also, if you run the ME2 Configuration Utility (and, don't forget!, let it rescan your system!) it should show not only your processor but also the correct number of processor cores.

And there you have it.

Now, my base rig easily beat the ME2 requirements. It was just that I hadn't set up my rig properly. So...my issue was...in fact...not a problem with the game itself. That means for all of you single core users out there I can only offer my condolences and the hopes that a patch from Bioware does the trick.

But...for those of you running multicore processors like I was, who this solution has helped...all I ask is that you remember me when you name your first-born.

=)

goodnight, I'm off to play some FREAKIN Mass Effect 2

Also, is there a quick and dirty way to know for sure whether my PC is utilizing all four cores or not?

To check the number of cores ME2 thinks you have:
Open the ME2 Configuration utility from the launcher (or from C:\\\\Program Files\\\\Mass Effect 2\\\\Binaries\\\\MassEffect2Config.exe).
Navigate to the System tab of the System section.
The number of cores should be displayed as greater than 1 for ME2 to function properly.

From the ME2 readme:

Game Known Issues-----------------Mass Effect 2 does not run optimally on a computer with a single coreCPU. We recommend that Mass Effect 2 PC is not played on a systemwith a single core CPU.
If you have a multicore processor but it is displayed as a single core processor:

raphaelt wrote....
FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE XP AND IT IS REPORTING ONLY ONE CORE and you have a multi-core system:

Read this Microsoft KB article, it may pertain to you: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936235

The hotfix described in that article may or may not affect how Mass Effect 2 utilizes the cores on your system, but it may well fix how XP (and possibly the ME configuration utility?) read the number of cores you have. Note that the hotfix is from Spring 2009, so it is not terribly old and does apply to SP3 (unlike older SP2-related multi-core issues).

I am about to try it myself.
Hopefully, step 3 is restart comp and step 4 is enjoy game.... :P

I have an AMD Phenom X3 710 which is showing as one single core in the config utility, and yes, I have the 'loadscreen freeze requires hard restart' bug.

Epic fail on the launch there EA. (Blame EA!)

/edit The above workaround is not happening... I have no Boot tab in msconfig....?!?
I have: General, SYSTEM.INI, WIN.INI, Services, Startup, Tools. So what do I type into my boot.ini?

Spam is when you post more than once. Lots of people posting the same thing is an epidemic.
Sorry, the post above me had not been entered while I was writing mine. Had some text edit bugs and whatnot....
Anyway, it didn't work. The hotfix is for SP2 and was supposedly included in SP3 meaning it's already installed.
So can someone give me a screenie of the boot.ini fix pelase? I'm wondering if it's a reg that can be edited....
