I agree that this thread has become a dumping ground for several unrelated problems. So, to address the original issue...

I have a single core. I added the "nomovie" command line. And still my game freezes at the character creation screen. Every time. There's no opening cinematic. Just what appears to be a glowing mass relay and some other graphics trying to load up on the screen with a small "Loading..." in the lower right corner. Is there a fix for that? Hard to tell with all this file replacing, archives, torrent files, unofficial work-arounds, and adding "nomoviestartup" to the target line.
Seems to me that loading a screen to create a character isn't a cinematic, just an interface. So, did I miss something in these bloody 54 (!!) pages?

This is the same issue I have! I cant get past the frozen mass relay to do anything else!:crying: Going to try the no movie fix and see if that works. Guess I will have to rob a bank so I can get me a multi core computer.:bandit: I didnt notice the multi core reqirement when buying it, I understand wanting to make a game that uses multi core's but there are tons of people with single core's and its awesome that they are working on a fix for us single ones... well i think they are.... ether way I will try to play the game b/c I loved the first one so much! Thanks everyone for posting the fix's and links to the stuff!

Well sorry for spamming. I know of at least one, if not several other people who had symptoms very similar to mine--symptoms described by the OP of this thread...if you read the 55 pages of the thread (like I have) you'll find that around half of the posts are people just trying to determine what specific problem we were dealing with.

Well, I got impatient with that, so I explained my specific problem. And then I spent a day figuring out what was going on. And then I fixed it. And then I decided to post what I found on here.

Somewhere along the line I guess my intentions went from "I want to contribute to finding solutions for people's problems" to "I have nothing better to do but add several paragraphs of filler and distraction to a thread about which I have no understanding". At least that's the impression I'm getting.

So, if you've got a multicore processor and the ME2 config utility is showing 1 core, and you're experiencing freezes, PM me and I'll lend a hand. Otherwise...read on, your solution is out there I'm sure.

Ahh, Vista.

XP SP3 is within minimum specs, but lol.

All this for some fancy load screen videos... I really don't see why it's necessary. Think I'll try using the old ME1 video.

STOP SPAMMING. Wow really people, i've seen the same "Fixes" on every page. People can learn to start backtracking and reading, instead of needing to have the fixes reposted!!

I agree. You people keep reposting and asking the same questions over and over again. Read the god damn thread.

Better yet read this page. It explains everything. social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/106/index/772168/47

You can play either with the blank movie files or the -nomovies- fix. You'l just miss the loading screens (blank movie files) or the loading screens AND the other movies (nomovies fix). Your second option is to wait till Bioware releases a fix. Bioware DID promise a fix but did not gave any additional information.

System Specs:
Windows XP SP3
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ (2 GHz)
Radeon HD 3850 512MB (DirectX 9.0c)
2GB RAM

No. Mass Effect 2 runs just fine on a single core; it's the .bik movies that seem to be an issue. There is a work around.

Hey guys, I may have found a partial cure for those witht his issue, that DO have multicores.

Copy thi slink into your browser and download the CPU Control.

http://www.softpedia...U-Control.shtml
(haha, almost forgot the link)     :)

This program allows you to activate ME2 in windows mode then click ont he cpu control window, after that click on "manual" then RT.click ME2 and set it for multiple cores fi you only have two then set it for 1+2 if you have four you could set it to 3+4 or 2+3 point being that you would be distubuting the load.
This is not however the greatest thing since sliced bread. The movies will still lag some but WAY not as bad, and gameplay after is still too laggy to play.
I only played around with CPU Control a little bit, It may be better than even I think for multicore users. I just haven't played around with it enough.
Good luck and if I come across something else I'll be sure to let you all know.

On the singlecore-issue: After installing the loading-screen-fix, simply try running the game in windowed mode. No "-nomoviestartup" needed! That way you´ll be able to see all videos with far less stuttering afterwards. At least that worked for me. Full screen mode it was about 1 sec running, then 5 secs freeze, in window mode its 1 sec freeze every 10 secs running. It´s good enough for going through the dialog which follows most videos, and after that you can still do the quicksave/load thing.

I'll start off by saying that I am having the same problem, and that my compy's stats are as follows:

Processor: AMD Athlon™ 64 Processor 4000+, ~2.6GHz
Memory: 1918MB RAM
Video Card: ATI Radeon HD 3450

Secondly, I'll say that I bought this game at the midnight launch, and was the second person in line.  I did not, however, install the game until a day later as I was still working on ME1 so I could import my character.  I didn't actually attempt to start a new game until another day after that, at which point I discovered the problem.  Since then I've been following this thread regularly and have read every post up to this point, including the few and far between postings from BioWare Moderators.  After reviewing everyone's entries, I have figured out the one and only thing we all have in common:

We all have this bug.

I've seen it in Windows XP, Vista, and 7.  I've seen it with NVidia and ATI video cards.  I've seen it with AMD and Intel processors.  I've seen it with single core, dual core, and quad core processors.  And for those that state the "single core problem" theory, I've seen several single cores run it without this problem and I've seen it affect multiple cores that have all the cores being read and still the problem persists.  It has happened with just about every possible configuration under the sun, and yet it also hasn't.  I'd be willing to bet another $50 that someone out there with a system exactly like mine has run the game without a hitch.

Yes, another $50.  So far that's how much I paid for a menu and a couple of intro movies.  We're told that I'll have to wait to get more until BioWare feels like giving it.  Won't be today, won't be tomorrow, in fact we don't even know when the first fixless patch will come out before they get to work on the one that will actually allow me to play the game.  So far they seem to want me to chop my game into bits with user-created fixes and play with whatever's left while they go get a sandwich.  While the reasons for my refusal to do so are numerous, I'll simply state the one at the top of the list: This is BioWare's mess, and they should be the one to clean it up.  That's what I paid them for, after all (though, granted, I actually paid GameStop, and I don't know what BW's cut of that is, but you get the idea...).

I'll finish off by saying that I love BioWare.  NWN, KOTOR, Jade Empire, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, I've loved them all, and never had a single problem with any of them.  I always held BioWare high on a pedastal above other gamemakers because they had earned it, time and time again.  While this game will more than likely become a part of that illustrious tradition, this incident has placed a dark scar on their name and reputation that shall not be forgotten anytime.  High as they were, they've certainly fallen from grace...

Buddy.... just calm down.  You realize you're getting upset over a video game?

A patch is in the works, just be patient.  How long did you wait for Mass Effect 2 to come out already?  Just wait a few more weeks, the game it worth it.

Well i tried alot of the solutions in this thread ( exluding the ones that made it impossible to play it all the way through and also removed cinematics ingame ) And nothing works, HOWEVER, this whole Q&A system actually led me to a computer fault where only 1 of my processors are running in Windows Vista, so .. thanks Mass Effect 2??..

Well erm i am going to instal Windows 7 tommorow and i'll give all of you guys a heads up if it helped? If anyone is interrested in such a answer

We know a patch in the works so why are we getting so upset? That's a simple answer for me, we all paid $50 for ME2 and it doesn't work so we're angry. But Bioware has confirmed a patch to solve this problem and we're still angry. It's because we have to wait till Bioware releases it. And while we're waiting thousands of other player can play and enjoy Mass Effect 2. But just hold on guys, when Bioware promises something they'll actually do it!

I fixed this problem by completely re-downloading it again from steam.

I think it was a damaged or not properly downloaded movie files.

Checking file integrity/defrag didn't sort it, only a full re-install.

of course we work weekends, however there are other important issues that need addressing too.

i really hate to sound like a broken record, but the simple fact is that the min-spec was explicitly listed as dual core. there's a lot of double talk going on on this forum. but i just want to see, from what you have all posted, and what we have seen, this IS a single core issue. the folks that have two RECOGNIZED cores and are still having an issue must be crashing from another (notnearly as widespread) issue.

believe it or not, (by far) the vast majority of people who have purchased the game do have dual core, and are not hitting any issues.

having said that, - again - we are looking at seeing what we can do for a proper fix (and again, NO promises). we have patch 1 coming out in the next few weeks, but the fix to this will have to go into patch TWO (if at all).

don't worry, we are reading this thread and we are aware of the issues. whether or not we can come up with a patchable solution to the issues remains to be seen.

once i can give a conclusive answer, i will.

Comp Specs:

Gtx 260

2 gb Corsair

Amd 64 3000 (1.8ghz)

Having the same problem as previously described. If intro is run, I can get all the way to the confirmation of my import/new character and then it freezes on the loading screen with Shepards skeleton laid out. If I don't let the intro play it'll freeze on the first loading screen. I have 3 or 4 processor (including dual core) so I'll trade this single out for the X2 and let you guys know if it's solely a single core issue for me or just a more serious bug with the installation.

I have the hard copy version of the game just FYI. First fresh install with no DLC, and then after trying some of the prescribed efforts, with DLC. No difference in the crashing/freezing

Please understand the situation we're in Bioware, 140+ people can't play the game and are waiting for an update. I understand the problem isn't that important and they're might be no fix at all.
