You can't see it and a lot of people have b**** about it on the forums already.
The only way you know if your doing right by a companion is by the way they interact with you, personal quest, etc...

there is no approval rating bar. It's not that you can't see it, its that its not in the game.

This is true plus there is no gifts like in DA:O/DA:A that you can spam to up your approval.

Is approval needed for anything like he other games? I know in the others, you needed to have a certain amount of approval rating, or when it came to a major fight or plot line, sometimes the companions would leave? Hence why you needed to either have max friendship or rival. Or is it purely just conversational/banter/quests?

You need certain approval for interactions and personal quests. Talk to them often, they will ask you to help them with something if your approval meets the requirement. That being said I've not had any problem getting the rating high enough for these quests. Just don't be mean. ![]()

I'm confused by how approval works. I initially thought it was part of romancing and that's what's confused me. I wasn't sure who to romance at first but decided on Cassandra. But after I gave her Varric's novel (which happened very shortly after arriving at Skyhold) which she greatly approved of she stopped approving, or disapproving, of anything I do. Before I had even started her Unfinised Business quest, all I could do when I talked to her was ask her for advice. Now I've completed Unfinished Business (no change to approval) and I can still only ask her for advice (which she's stopped giving anyway, all she'll say now is "Nothing I can think of at the moment, no.")
If I've completely screwed up this romance I'd at least like to know how and why?
Am I completely misunderstanding how approval is supposed to work?

Cassandra quest "Unfinished Business" isn't her personal quest! That is a side quest most companions have it.
Her personal quest is called "Promise of Destruction" then after that done you get her two romance quest.
One of which you've already done called "Guilty Pleasures", well "GP" kinda is and isn't a romance quest but I personal place it
under that area. The main romance quest is called "The Ideal Romance".
One thing to get any romance active is to always choice the flirt option whenever it pops up when your talking to your LI.
The other is to make sure their approval is high, you'll know this once you get their personal quest followed by the romance quest shortly after.
My first playthrough had romance Cassandra before I even finish "Unfinished Business"
That's because my approval high with her and had did her personal quest "Promise of Destruction".
The trick in this DA game is always talk to your companions before and after any mission.
That is how I figure out how to unlock peoples quest and or romance options.

Ah, okay, thanks a bunch! I had assumed that all quests listed under "Inner Circle" were Personal Quests. In retrospect, I'm not sure why I assumed that but I did. Now it all makes sense; thanks again.
