Ok, first question is console or PC?

Second Question ... Ultimate Edition with all of the DLC or just Origins?

Third Question ... how "Spoilerly" do you want us to get with you?

Use tactics. Use tactics.

One more: uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuse taaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaactiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiics.

Seriously, those are powerful. Set your companions to the tactic that fits most for them (for a sword-and-shield companion defender is a good tactic, and for a mage either damager or healer is good to start with), and pick abilities that make sense for that tactics setup (a defender would take some of the defensive shield abilities, the mage would take the appropriate talents like Winter's Grasp or Heal).

Set your behaviors (I just used European spelling by accident there, eww). On the tactics screen, it's the bar on the top of the right page that has options like Ranged, Passive, Defensive, Aggressive, etc. You'll want any ranged character, including your mages, to be ranged. You'll want a defender to be either defensive or aggressive. Aggressive would probably be better.

If you want specific combat tips, just ask and you can get 'em. But one more thing: get the Advanced Tactics mod. This mod allows you to first have way more tactics options for your characters, and then it allows a couple of special things. One, it allows you to set tactics for your character that you have selected and just let them run under those (if you ever played FF XII, kind of like enabling gambits for the controlled character there). Additionally, it allows you to tell rogues to automatically go for flanking attacks (which get more damage).

That mod is here. Seems there's a bigger version of it here, but I haven't tried it out.

Again, if you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask. Though if you're asking me, quote me so I don't forget about this thread (there are so many).

Do you regularly pick up loot that is dropped by killed enemies and random shiny boxes, crates, and sacks you find lying around? Usually you can find armor, weapons, staves and robes (I assume that's what you mean when you say "equipment") lying around. Be sure to check the tier and quality of your armor and weapons. The higher the tier and damage/defense quality, the better the equipment.

The longer you play, the better quality weapons and armor you'll find randomly lying around, so be sure to check, compare, and swap out the weapons and armor of all of your companions regularly.

Also, check the Dragon Age Wiki. It often has lists of named weapons and armor within the game, as well as where and how you can find it.

If you're playing on PC, you can use the mods on DANexus to mod some gear into your game.  Origins was very mod-friendly so there were lots of nice things to be had playing that.

DA2 was less mod friendly but also had plenty of things to make playing it easier too.

Even if  you played on PS or Xbox, both games came with DLCs or free giveaway's to make the game easier.  Check what you qualify for on your profile on the BSN.

Enjoy and welcome to Dragon Age! :D

There is a way, via crafting, to generate huge amounts of cash. You may then use the cash to buy good gear.

You need to have someone in your party with Herbalism 4. It can be you, or Wynne or whomever. You then buy lyrium from the Circle Tower and Concentrator and Distiller from the innkeeper in Denerim. For maximum profit buy flasks from the wine merchant in Orzammar. For quicker turn around time and a smaller profit buy flasks from the bartender in Denerim (same guy you bought the other stuff from). Make lots of Potent Lyrium Potions. Sell them. If you are a dwarf noble, Sell them to Gorim. Otherwise, just dump them on some merchant. Rinse and repeat until you have lots' o gold.

Or you can activate the developer console (if you are using a PC) and type a simple line commend.

Crafting method is here. Console commands are here.

General things I found useful:

1. Always have one of each class in your party, with the Warden serving as a second member of that class.

2. If playing a warrior or rogue as the Warden, set your mage's tactics preset to "Healer". If playing a mage, keep an eye on your teammates' health and spam that Heal spell.

3. Set the party on "hold position" and use one character to draw enemies to a strategically useful location a few at a time.

4. Similar to 3, let your rogue take point on exploration so you don't run into traps. Don't stray too far from the rest of the party, though.

5. Focus early spending on health and lyrium potions.

6. Curse the lack of stamina potions in the main game.

7. Abuse the pause function to plan out your moves in battle before you make them.

8. When all else fails, run like hell.

Early in the game - when your character is level 3 or thereabouts - you'll come to same sort of really big army camp. Take your time with the missions you are given there, try to get the hang of combat. Experiment. Try different approaches. Also, the quartermaster there sells a cheap backpack that's worth every copper you spend on it; he also has cheap health pots and components for traps.

Take a good look at the loot you find - if your own character has no use for it then one of your companions might. You'll get companions with different abilities; try to build on their strengths. A sword-and-shield warrior can take a lot of heat whereas two-handers, rogues and mages are no good at tanking (at least early on) but they can dish out a lot of damage while the enemy beats on your tank. Rogues and mages especially have abilities that can disable enemies for a moment, thus securing a quick getaway or giving enough time to hand the bogies off to a tank.

Some abilities - like Overpower and Mighty Blow - can shatter enemies that have been frozen by a mage's Cone of Cold. There are quite a few such abilities, every class has some. That means if you freeze a group of enemies then you can dispatch up to four of them instantly (one shatter for each group member). Cone of Cold has a couple more interesting uses, it's one of the most powerful bread-and-butter spells. Glyph of Repulsion opens a lot of avenues for tactics and fun, and if you cast Glyph of Paralysis on it then it paralyses everyone - friend or foe - in 15 m radius. This means you can block a choke point for twenty seconds with the repulsion glyph and shortly before it runs out you can cast the paralysis glyph on it, allowing you to beat on the enemy with impunity for a while. These are just examples. There are many tactical tricks you can discover if you study the abilities of your characters and experiment.

Have a look at our Collection of videos demonstrating fighting styles and techniques for inspiration, especially if you're playing a mage.

Oh, I love Cone of Cold. Great for when you want to disable annoying grunts. "I'll deal with you later."

Should take you to the right page to unlock all of the free unlockables for both Origins and Hawke's Age ... Also I think some of the free Dragon Age III promotions are still going on, you might as well tie those into your profile while you're at it to use in the future. (You'll have to google the Dragon Age III promos though, I'm feeling a little lazy today. :P )

--EDIT--

Oh, and there's no reason not to unlock them for all platforms, so you might as well.

Origins is a pretty good game:) my favorite of the series so far. As for tips i'll give my tips:

1. Use tactics and be smart on how you approach combat to make it easier to where you're not using health pots like crazy. If you have an archer or mage put your party on hold position and use that said archer or mage to shoot at on enemy and lure them to your group, once that enemy is near let your party move freely to attack and once the enemy is dead lock party and go lure another enemy. Repeat till everything's dead or if you think a groups numbers are low enough that you can send your party into for battle.

2. get every single resource you can from traveling encounters. Pick up every plant as you never know when you'll need em.

3. try to get as much backpacks as possible when you're able to buy them as it helps to carry as much as possible and it can make a few extra coppers.

4.Plan out how you plan on lvling your toons, look at skills for a good 10-20 minutes (I know, sounds boring but it will give you an idea on what items to put your toons focus on.)

5. Do a lot of talking after every main mission if you want to get as much detail out of companions as possible.

6. craft items as it can literally make things a lot easier, use runes but be smart about them. Don't use master or grandmaster runes on low lvl stuff, save that for the high lvl gear.

7. This one's up to you but try to make as much health poultices as possible (I think 100 is ok) this way you'll always have them available in case you need them, I can't stress how often I went in a mission with so few potions and it took me hours to finally get through it on low health already lol although if you like a challenge then by all means go ahead.

8. Watch your enemy! see how they attack and how they react to you, pay attention to detail as it can lead to you seeing the strengths and weaknesses of your target. It can also help you live longer if you see how he attacks you to avoid it.

9. Save gold, and use it only on the essentials, there's not a lot of gold (imo) so use it on backpacks, health potions and health kits (try not to die and you won't necessarily need to buy a lot of health kits.) and some crafting materials. there are a few good items from vendors that are worth the gold but try to save a good amount in case. as the second part of the tip try to collect as much chest and lot enemies as much as possible and if you get full throw away the least valuable items in your pack (make sure not your items! I've unfortunately done this myself lol). a little tip about removing items, you have to send it to your trash list and then go to that section in order to delete it.

10. Explore! you can find some really neat stuff just wondering the areas. make sure to read as much books/scrolls/statues/ and talk to npcs to get codex ex from them which can lvl you up a little quicker.

11. Use items carefully. What I mean is if you get poison potions and temporary armor bonus items use them at boss fights or large groups of enemies, never use em on one or 2 guys as that's a waste unless they're bosses. if you get the feeling a boss fight is on the way, heal yourself and party up as much as possible cause there can always be a surprise! expect the unexpected I say, try to keep yourself ready for whatever situation approach's.

I could probably come up with a few more lol but i'd need to play the game or think for a while (been maybe a year since I've touched DA:O) but I hope these tips will helps, it's up to you on whether to use it or not but as I tell most people who play BioWare games, they're made to be played differently be each person, we all have our own different personalities and think different. Enjoy the series, Dragon Age is a beautiful series and so is Mass Effect if you've not played it yet. Enjoy!

At one point in the game you can get free permanent boosts to your stats. Consider them when building your character. Here are the numbers:

Strength: 4
Dexterity: 4
Willpower: 4
Magic: 2
Cunning: 5
Constitution: 2
Note that with those boosts you won't need to put any points in Cunning to get 4/4 Coercion on a, say, mage character which saves you 5 points you can put or somewhere else.
Grab free DLCs that add promotional items. You can sell those items and make a bunch of cash early on.
