I am currently on my second playthrough on my Mage and Leliana is COMPLETELY different than she was on my other playthrough.

The Leliana I had the first time through was much darker and serious. Cold hearted.

This one at a certain point might as well have a halo. Much more cheerful. More more.....bright.

Does anyone know what affects this?

Is it the keep? (Neither one was she romanced by the Warden)

Decisions made along the way?

Doubt it's the Keep as there isn't really anything there related to Leliana that'd have such impact (it doesn't import whether you 'harden' her in DAO)

Out of curiosity, how did you go about the scene early in Haven where you can influence how she deals with one of her agents? That could be a change point.

It's not the Keep. It's an early game conversation, among other things. See her thread on the Characters forum, there's a lot of spoilers involved.

There is an option in the keep regarding Marjolaine, which was key to "hardening" Leliana in Origins. I'm not sure what impact that decision may have, but if it does something, that's probably the trigger.

Pretty sure I told her to spare them.

Might have remained silent the first time through.

That was 79 hours of gameplay ago -_____-

I just checked.

Both options were the same on the two separate keep saves.

Nope, my import had the situation with Marjolaine resolved peacefully and Leliana "unhardened". She is all dark in DAI though since my inquisitor happens to approve dealing with troublesome people efficiently.

So its basically when you have the option to confront her?

How you deal with it dictates how she behaves?

My guess would be the former. Leliana gets influenced easily :3

edit: I misread the second line. Yeah, that'd basically make the difference. There may be other factors too, but that's probably stuff the spoiler section will have details on.

She's a flake that constantly needs her personality moulded by other people apparently.

Did your Warden sacrifice himself in DA:O?  Regardless of whether or not he romanced Leliana, his death may have severely impacted her.  She seems kind of dark in my playthrough as well, and my Warden sacrificed himself.  Just a thought.

Leliana's personality is dictated by two conversation points. It's insanely easy to accidentally harden her in the first conversation, as the hardening choice there makes the most sense. One of those points is enough to permanently harden her for the rest of the game.

Weelll.... It's a little overbroad to say her whole personality is dictated by two things. It's her outlook towards the inquisition and her place in it that is pretty malleable, and I guess that makes sense since the concept of an inquisition is pretty new. And she's always kinda struggled with how to adapt her faith to her worldview.

The problem I had gameplay-wise was that it's so easy to be aced out of the unhardened Leliana so early on, and with too few narrative clues as to the stakes.

Oh damn, so because I chose to remain silent 50 hours ago during a single conversation with her, Leliana is an ice queen for the rest of the game and, who knows, future games now? That is so incredibly disheartening, especially since I didn't harden her during Origins and I even spared Marjorlaine's life and sent her away!  :crying:

It is, I agree. But I expect it's something you'll be able to alter via the Keep eventually, assuming it's a distinction that matters going forward.

Oh well, I thought a bit more about it and at least for the first "hardening" conversation I would not have chosen the alternative, so I am content with the choice that I made. Heh, even if I wasn't, I wouldn't have started a whole new game because of it, since this way my choices actually feel like they have an impact and I need to give them a bit more thought before pulling the trigger.  ;)

That conversation needed about 50% more dialogue to explain why it was a big deal to kill the turncoat.  It wasn't like she was advocating torture.

Yeah, I try to just live with my first play through choices, because it's really my one chance to not metagame it, even subconsciously. But I left the world in kind of a shitty place in doing so. Road to hell and all that.

What I meant by her personality was her outlook towards accomplishing her job. Hardened she is much more ruthless/violent, and all it takes to harden her is to remain silent in one conversation. I think it would have been better if it required several points to harden her entirely.

I think it was great actually. You can really change the character's outlook without knowing about it. I think it was an awesome move on Bioware's part because it ensures replayability.

I remained silent in that first conversation because I let her do her job and thought she knew best. As much as I like new ruthless Leliana I want to replay and try a different approach with her.

Nope.

I never sacrifice my Warden in the Keep. Just in case he/she shows up later on.

Interestingly I've had "dark" Leiliana for most of my game and now she's suddenly seems to be have perked up a bit after a conversation with her, which surprised me, because her response to the conversation itself was pretty dour.
